OT: Mahomes has cleared concussion protocol - is cleared to play Sunday

Submitted by Indy Pete - Go Blue on January 22nd, 2021 at 3:10 PM

Headline says it all.  I remember a previous thread where some people were saying the average protocol is 19 days, and the chances of him playing were slim.  Those of us familiar with things such as money remained confident he would find a way to clear the protocol in time.  Henne's chances of a ring have improved - but it is nice to know that the old rocket is still one play away from glory again.

Bit off topic, but I still believe that had Henne landed in a better situation than Miami and Jacksonville he could have succeeded as a starter in the league. He had all the mental and physical skills. Not talented enough to become a star in a bad situation like a Deshaun Watson, but enough talent where had a coach committed to his development and put him in the right system, he would have been a good starter. Just my opinion. Of course, he's not the only QB you could say that about.

Also, he looks to be in much better shape now than he was at Michigan and in the early days of his pro career.

I think his ceiling was essentially Ryan Fitzpatrick's career.

Henne, as shown by that awful interception he threw last week, too often made a couple passes a game that were just inexcusable. But he has an above average arm, OK accuracy, decent athleticism, and is a solid team mate, so he certainly could have led a better team to a 9-7 or 10-6 record and maybe a playoff game.

Agree the interception last week was poor, but I don't know where the perception that he often made poor decisions comes from. Almost all his Michigan career, even much of his freshman season, was him hitting accurate deep balls while playing within himself. And he was poor in Miami for sure, but I rarely saw him make "inexcusable" decisions.

But I generally agree with you, although I think his ceiling was slightly higher. He's much less of a gunslinger than Fitzmagic but he has a stronger arm. Hate to use this comparison, but he should have had a more Cousins-like NFL career imo.

Oh well.

The guy has thrown 60 TDs and 63 INTs lifetime. Even accounting for the fact that Henne missed as a starter the last 5 years or so when we truly entered the age of modern, easy QB play (e.g., they can barely be hit by defenders; offenses have become much more sophisticated and pass-friendly), that is poor.

I suppose *maybe* he could have been like Kirk Cousins if Henne started his career five years later, but I'm not sure Henne would have ever been a guy who completed 67-69% of his passes; Taco Pants existed for a reason.

I honestly don't think it was (in my non-doctor, professional opinion). He didn't appear to hit his head on anything, though I realize whip lash can cause it (though, again, it didn't look like that either).

The best theory I saw was that the high tackle (which was blow to and strained the neck area) was essentially ilike one of those karate chops to the neck in movies which knocks people down like a bag of rocks and renders you like a drunk for a minute or so.

Or maybe they're blowing off an actual concussion. Who knows?

Not really. The Chiefs never said anything other than what the docs told them. I'm not sure anyone has said that it was actually a concussion. I guess you can infer since he was in the protocol, but as others have said, it didn't look like one. Not that that means anything. He very well could have had one, but if you look at the play it could just as easily been a nerve or cutoff airway situation.

The Bills still have a real shot regardless. Should hopefully be a great game.

Side note: who is everyone taking in the Bucs-Packers game? Sure hard for anyone to beat the same team twice, especially when you have to go to Lambeau to do it. I've got 31-28 Packers, but if Brady has the ball in his hands with two minutes to go and is down by a TD or less, then all bets are off.

Chicago Trib column today on Mahomes.

LINK:  If Mahomes plays Sunday after a concussion, will we not be entertained?

“This is a test for the NFL, right now,” Hall of Fame quarterback Brett Favre (Packers, Vikings) was quoted as saying by NBC Sports.

The quarterback wants to play in the big game, even though he just suffered head trauma. The league that has spent millions of dollars trying to deal with negative publicity about concussions has marketed itself to moms as “family friendly.”

Because there’s nothing more family friendly than ignoring brain trauma.

So many want him to play. The sportsbooks. The networks. And all those fans who want the Chiefs to repeat as Super Bowl champions.

Of course there's more, although I'm pretty sure the Trib is not an open site.

I don't feel good about Mahomes playing. Of course he wants to play, and of course the Chiefs want him to play. All I'll say is that I hope there is someone unbiased making the decision, with no incentive to rule him able to play. Anyone who is being paid by the Chiefs, and to some degree, by the NFL, has a real incentive to find Mahomes without a head injury and able to play.
