OT: LSU RG Josh Boutte Suspended 1 Game for Late Hit

Submitted by Croatian_Blue on

LSU's RG Josh Boutte was suspended by Les Miles for 1 game for his vicious, late cheap shot on Wisconsin CB D'Cota Dixon. That game is against Jacksonville State. Les defended Boutte saying it was out of character and that Boutte believed the play was still live, which I totally believe.  /s

For those that didn't see the hit, here is the link:

Boutte is 6'5", 346 lbs and Dixon is 5'10", 203 lbs.  This could've done a lot of damage, but thankfully didn't.

This brings me to my question: What punishment does Boutte actually deserve?

Seeing it live I thought the kid should have been sent home right then. That was uncalled for. I've never seen anything like that. A one game suspension is a joke.

That young man should not play for a very long time. I may have kept him on the team and given him the opportunity to work his way back for next season (if he has eligibility left). This is a coach on the hottest of seats and knows that unfortunately that he has to do whatever is in the best interest of winning.

I hate to say it, but watching the game live, it totally looked like the guy clearly thought the play was still live.  He looked completely confused on the sideline after it happened.  Still, it was an awful hit and deserves the suspension.  But I would bet money that he thought the play was still live.

It looks to me like he knew that the play was over, but nobody can really know for sure except for him. Even if it was intentional, he could have told Les that it was an accident, and Les could just be repeating what Boutte told him.

what the guy was thinking.  Just glad there wasn't serious damage to the other player.  When I first saw it, I thought total cheap shot.  But then wasn't sure given what Miles said.  But then if he truly thought the play was live in this case, I would think he would be hitting guys after the whistle all over the place.  Who knows.
