OT: Jessica Walter (Arrested Development, Archer) Passed Away

Submitted by TXWolverine44 on March 25th, 2021 at 4:03 PM

Jessica Walter passed away today

I know I'm not the only one who not just loved Arrested Development but specifically Jessica Walter's Lucille Bluth and Mallory Archer on Archer.

I'm not one to get affected by many celebrity's deaths but this one hurts a lot

RIP

Wow. Just binge watched archer too and finished yesterday. Her character was an all time great cartoon mother.

She was a terrific actress and was in a lot of interesting stuff - check out Grand Prix (1966) directed by John Frankenheimer , Play Misty for Me (with Clint Eastwood) and was regular on nearly all of the dramas of the past few decades (Mannix, Barnaby Jones, Columbo, Hawaii 5-0, Ironside, McCloud, Streets of San Francisco, McMillian, Quincy ME, Knots Landing, Murder She Wrote, Magnum PI, 90210, Babylon 5, Law & Order, NCIS, The Big Bang Theory in addition to Archer and Arrested Development)

More pop work include voicing Granny Goodness in the 2020 Harley Quinn animated series, she was Morgan Le Fay in a Dr. Strange TV movie on 1978 (back when Marvel was still trying to figure out how to create a MCU).

Sadly the unpossible joke has been around so long I can't even find it's origin on google. Apparently it's since been co-opted by the Simpsons, and google is terrible at everything other than selling you stuff.

Getting old is hell.

She was great in Play Misty for Me. People who appear to listen to what you say and then go on it like the conversation never happened unnerve me greatly.

First Woodhouse and now Mallory

My all time favorite tv mom.

Hate speech may be a bit hyperbolic, but Eli's comment was still a shitty one that I also downvoted. Here's why:

I'll not try to divine his intent, pardon the pun, but - ESPECIALLY as an agnostic person - hearing someone say of a recently deceased person, or anyone really, that you "hope they were Christian", is another reinforcement of the disdain we feel from several (but certainly not all) self-professed Christians - that we're somehow damaged or less-than if we aren't Christians.  Obviously, this is a country of mostly self-identified Christians and that's manifested in several aspects of our culture, but one of the ideals that makes this country great is that you can worship (or not) as you please.  Most of the Christian people I know are great people, and I don't look down on them for a faith I don't share and that cuts both ways.

At any rate, Eli certainly has the freedom to make a shitty comment and I'll simply downvote and move on, but I think it important enough to explain at least my position on why I did so.

Thank you for the compliment!  My late MIL was a devout Christian and I know that she wanted nothing more for me than to know the love of Jesus Christ (because she said so a zillion times) and it was a little heartbreaking that I couldn't truthfully indulge her on that.  A more intemperate and younger me might've reacted tactlessly and I'm so grateful I never did.  Because, regardless of whatever happens beyond this world, I know that she came from a place of genuine love for me that was manifested in just the person she was.  Not all "I'll pray for yous" are created equal, as they say.

First thing I remember her from is PCU, a modest college movie from the early 90s. She stuck out then as amazing in a mediocre film and then she just crushed two of the best shoes ever.

Jessica was an amazing actress and human being.  I first became aware of her in ‘71 when, as a relatively unknown actress, she was picked by Clint Eastwood to be the female lead in Play Misty For Me, his directorial debut.  Her performance as an obsessed stalker opposite Clint’s Carmel radio DJ character was astounding.  She won a Golden Globe nomination and the movie was an artistic and financial success for Eastwood, ensuring his future as a Director who could get financial support for his own projects.  This, in turn, led to his 4 Oscars and 11 Oscar nominations, among other accolades.  In the late 70’s I was fortunate to get to know Jessica when she came to my folks’ home in LA for dinner.  (It turned out her family and mine had been longtime friends since their years in DC.)  Jessica was by then a rising star but you couldn’t tell it by her humble demeanor.  She maintained the grounded approach to life one can get from growing up in Brooklyn.  She will be missed!
