OT - Jamal Crawford Retires

Submitted by 615Wolverine on March 21st, 2022 at 2:20 PM

Our very own Jamal Crawford who played 20 seasons in the NBA for over 9 teams has officially retired. I know he barely played for us but he was drafted in the lottery and was a very productive player. He won 3, 6th man of the year awards and is second all time in points off the bench.
Enjoy retirement Jamal, Go Blue!

I do remember the very first maize rage at Crisler wearing headbands in his honor in 1999.  But that was year 3 of Brian Ellerbe and....ugh...let's not relive those seasons otherwise.

He also went to the same high school in Seattle (Ranier Beach) that football prospect Josh Conerly, Jr. goes to.   Maybe Harbaugh should give him a job with a very specific job description.

He may have only played a couple dozen games in a Michigan uniform, but he still qualifies as a Michigan "product" -- and therefore ranks as the the highest scoring Michigan product in the NBA of all time.  It's too bad he never got the chance to reach 20,000 points or crack the NBA top 50 -- he was about 150 points away when the Nets signed him at the beginning of the 2020 bubble season.  Alas, he pulled a muscle (as happens to 40 year olds) after about 5 minutes.

Fun fact: it was Jamal Crawford (with Michael Jordan's face digitally superimposed) who played young Jordan in this commercial, at Jordan's personal request.

Really a good guy and very well respected by the other players. NBA icon on and off the court. He had style and swag. I heard him on a podcast and he really spoke highly of his short time at Michigan even with all the controversy. He said he grew up a Michigan fan and I think he said he committed without even a visit!

Always loved Crawford as a pro with his filthy handles and nice shot.

He was, however, before my time of watching Michigan basketball. Can someone explain why he’s rarely brought up?

His eligibility in his one season here was cut short by NCAA suspension resulting from a non family member giving him benefits in HS.  Did terrible things like allow him to live in a safe place (a room in the dude’s house), buy him clothes and gave him a used car to drive.  He also tried to declare for the draft in HS, which wasn’t allowed … so apparently even just trying was suspension-extension worthy when the NCAA heard about it later.

So he ended up playing here like half of a season. He was really good in that half season though.
