OT: It's official, GoT Season 8 won't air until Summer 2019

Submitted by NFG on

HBO executives today confirmed what was leaked out a month ago, that season 8 will not air until the summer of 2019. I have high expectations for the season given who they are bringing back to direct the shows. This will be one of the longest offseasons for any fandom, so if you haven't watched the series or need to catch up, now is the time to do so. It is the greatest show of all time. And to think I thought TWD was better at one point....

Not intending to be overly facetious about Martin passing, but he can see the facts as much as anyone else.  He is 69 and has been working on this series for over 20 years.  How much longer does he believe he can work on it?

Gives Martin a little over a year then to finish the series on his terms. Just needs to finish the last two books in that time. LOLOLOLOLOLOLOLOLOLOLOLOLOLOLOLOLOLOLOLOLOLOLOLOLOLOLOLOLOLOLOLOLOLOLOLOLOLOLOLOLOLOLOLOLOLOLOLOLOLOLOLOL

I pretty much figured this would be when it would air. Hopefully season 2 of Westworld will be sometime this year.

Breaking Bad is probably my favorite show of all time, GOT might be #2. Writing was kinda spotty for season 7, it was very exciting but you can tell we're getting toward the end and they're rushing to finish the story when characters and ravens are practically teleporting to a different location immediately.

TWD used to be up there but the show has gone downhill fast in the last season and a half. The writing is awful, characters do things that just don't make sense. I may give up on it.

Haven't seen the Wire, I will get to it since so many people say its either their favorite or 2nd favorite show.

GOT used to be the best show on television...

... until season 7 happened.

Everything seasons 1-6 was pure gold. One of the top 3 shows of all time in my opinion.

But the things wrong with season 7 are so numerous:

**** WARNING:  SPOILERS ****

- Extremely predictible plot line.  Almost zero twists.  The first season where nothing unexpected happened.

- Irrational character decisions.  Why didn't Dany just go with Jon Snow up north to begin with?  Why in the world would Jon Snow, Dany, and everyone risk everything just to bring a wight down to Ceresi, when she would probably just say no (or yes and betray) anyway?  And of course that's just what happened.

- No penatly for poor character decisions (i.e. main character armor).  Jamie Lannister should've died when charging Dany's dragon.  Instead he gets a miraculous save.  And how many times has Jon Snow gotten a last minute save now?

- Geography has been thrown out the window.  The show used to do a fantastic job of avoiding characters leaping from one side of the continent to the other.  Now Gentry can run 100s of miles in hours (through snow mind you) and ravens and dragons can fly at insane speeds.

- Character interactions make no sense.  Ceresi has spent the entire SERIES loathing Tyrion.  Wanting to not just murder him, but make him suffer first.  Then, she finally sees him after years and... talks meanly to him?  WTF.

Hopefully season 8 will be better.  But damn if season 7 didn't drop the show from a 10 down to a 6 in my book.  Maybe because the producers don't have GRR's books to fill in details anymore, so they are just covering his plot guidance only.

I was underwhelmed with the season, but it wasn't nearly as bad as you project.  There were unexpected twists.  I kind of agree about the Jaime plot armor thing, but I don't see it as such a bad thing either. Killing him off for that would have been a complete shame and left so much undone.  For the sake of "reality"?  Meh.

I think the season really was just a set up for this final season, which is unfortunate, but they really did run out of character arcs to develop.  Once Ramsay was gone, it's now the end game.  It's now the zombies.  The politics become unimportant, which is unfortunate because that's what made the show so great, but it was always coming to this point.

There were some awesome highlights of the season that allow me to overlook the stupid Gendry running to save the day and why the fuck didn't Dany just go with the Band of Brothers or why didn't they take the time and do a little exposition for some kind of more logical strategy about several things.  But, whatever.  If you can't get over a couple meh plot points and appreciate the good, that's a bummer.  Queen of Thornes death?  Perfect.  How the wall came down?  Didn't see that coming at all.  Your Cersei/Tyrion point?  Something is coming on that I'm sure. There was a reason she didn't just kill him and go berzerko. In fact, her character is maybe the only one that still has some development to go.

Like I said, it's all a set up for the final season where there is no longer plot armor. Everyone is on the chess table, anything can happen.  I'm guessing we'll see a much better production from D&D because they now don't need to hold back.  I'm wondering a lot about Meera and Howland Reed.  I thought that could have been a nice addition to the last season that allowed for a little more character development. I wonder how much Martin's lack of WINDS is a factor in their decisions. I'm sure quite a bit.

After the woefully underwhelming season 7 Im really not interested in waiting 2 years for another season. Ill just cross my fingers GRRM can pull an ending out of his ass before he dies. Not really interested in what the HBO showrunners come up with at this point.
