I get that this brings some stability, but if I were an Iowa fan, I'd want a little bit more than what Ferentz can provide.

Let's be clear: no one is ever going to mistake Iowa for Alabama, OSU or Michigan. It will never be a true destination job. But that doesn't mean its a bad job by any stretch. That's a program that could contend for conference titles on a yearly basis, maybe the occasional playoff berth with a special senior class, but I don't think Ferentz is the guy that can maximize the potential of that program.

He's a guy that can give you a taste of the good life for one season every 5-7 years, but just when you decide its time to start putting expectations on him and the program, he takes it all away from you and then BAM. Just like that, you're 6-6 again.

I think he's earned the right to retire from Iowa on his own terms. Never one major scandal, consistently solid program, I assume a great graduation rate, and puts a lot of players (especially O-Linemen) into the NFL. But if you want more than one 10+ win season every half decade, I don't think I would've given him that kind of extension.

Iowa has five Top Ten finishes under Ferentz, and for a state with easily one of the worst recruiting bases in the country (not to mention one that is diluted with another Power 5 school in Iowa State), it's a little easier to understand the extension.

Kirk's a good guy for college football.
