OT: Hypothetical - You're A 5* Recruit...How Do You Handle It?

Submitted by Mr. Elbel on
So, imagine you're a 5-star recruit during this recruiting cycle. How do you handle this? What happens when Michigan offers? Would anyone let another school potentially sway them? What about bag men? What do you say in a sit down with a recruiting service? What would your priorities be in a school? Loads of possibilities on this subject. Was randomly thinking of it on my hour-long commute home today. I'll put my thoughts down in the comments.

Go in with an open mind.  Milk the visits and idol worshiping for all it's worth.  It's the only chance in my career where I control the deck.  I take all my visits.  I commit on signing day.

Probably something along the lines of how Rashan Gary handled it.  I think he and his mom did their homework, explored every option and make the right decision.

Id visit the schools with the absolute hottest slam pieces that we know really hook it up and have women that are 5-10x more likely to fellate me. Thus:

Ole Miss (I'd take 5 visits there if I could, because the women are THAT much better looking than any other school)
Florida State
Georgia
Texas
LSU

in my hometown high school, maybe twice. Then as soon as I got my offer from UM I would commit. Then Harbaugh would tell me to take my visits. So I tell him that I want to visit to troll OSU and their master troller Spielman. Then I would Troll the shit out of a couple who shall not be named on this site, who I will ID only by saying a staee slappy and his sidekick Gloom and Doom. Then I would take a visit to good Ole Miss for some spending cash for my officials at .FSU, USC, Bama, LSU. To bang every hot slut on those campuses as well, maybe twice. I would though double rubber these school whores to remain clean and STD free.

Then I would come back to UM ready to meet my smart, clean, homespun, lol Michigan lady where I could then Wed. and have 4 kids then comepletely EF up her life by about the tenth year, then she can and will take me for everything we built with her shiny new UM lawyer boyfriend.

In other words at that age I was not smart enough to do the right thing. I would have been happy to live through it. But as always I would Go Blue!

some interesting answers, aside from the "I'd have more sex" answers, which....yeah ok. My thought was whether it not to be completely honest about how I would commit to Michigan or, like some have mentioned, screwing over a bunch of schools I hate. But I honestly think it makes the most sense to me to let people know about my love for Michigan with an EUTM. For instance, I would publicly let people know about my childhood dreams for playing for Michigan. The book I wrote in 5th grade about it. The huge beanbag I used to jump onto while catching my football pretending I was Desmond. All the nostalgic stuff. Then I would berate the likes of osu, msu, nd, Minnesota, rutgers, bama, UT, all that good stuff. I'm imagining an interview with a recruiting service that includes something like "I'll be taking all 5 officials, but unless a coach puts a gun to my head, I'm with Michigan. And in the case of osu, msu, and nd, they might as well pull the trigger because that's never happening. But I'll take my officials to some big schools because I want to be able to build relationships with the guys they're recruiting and bring them to ann arbor. Except for those 3 schools...I won't be visiting east Lansing, Columbus, or south Bend unless it's to beat their ass on the field in a winged helmet." Basically be as open about what's happening as possible. Try to bring as many big names with me as possible. it'd be fun as hell to screw over osu or msu on national tv, but in my mind it'd be even more fun to trash talk them for years.

...I feel as though I handled my recruitment pretty well.  When Michigan 1st offered, my primary concern was the host school's beer of choice.  While a light beer would be preferable for those marathon matches/tournaments, I was also a firm believer in a well crafted brew's ability to lift my spirits and open my mind to innovative techniques.  Whether you believe it or not, the bag men and co-eds were not just in the SEC.  When taking visits, I accepted everything they were willing to give with a smile on my face.  It wasn't as though they could take back their gifts after making my choice, so I cashed in on every opportunity.  I played it coy with recruiting services and recruiters so as to not let the bag men and co-eds know they were wasting their time with me.  I told everyone I had no leaders and even downplayed my real interest in Michigan.  In the end, I had to follow my heart and put on that maize and blue cap.  If I could do it all over again, I wouldn't have done anything differently with the exception of not playing too much before meeting up with the co-eds.

I would early on in the recruitment, make a top 5 of Michigan, Michigan State, Ohio State, Notre Dame, and Alabama. I would follow that up with going on as many unofficial visits to OSU and MSU I could possibly go on, while saying generic things about Michigan (all the while I've already told harbaugh I'm committed). OV all of these schools for their biggest games, yada yada, give "insiders" that its an MSU-OSU battle, and when signing day comes, put on the block M hat.

Stanford would be the only other team I'd consider, today. But if it was back when I was in high school it'd be Michigan and no one else.

Not sure I'd actually think to commit to OSU and then flip to Michigan on signing day, that is the ultimate troll. But I'd sure as hell pull a David Boston and go on my OV to OSU and talk trash the whole time.
