OT: Howard pulls biggest point-spread upset in college football history

This is interesting for a "few" reasons...

Article: http://www.espn.com/chalk/story/_/id/20555460/howard-stuns-unlv-biggest-point-spread-upset-college-football-history

1. It's the 10 year anniversary of The Horror and ESPN won't let us forget.

2. In that SAME year...a fiery coach at STANFORD upsets USC while playing as a 39-point underdog. That coach?

3. The Howard QB is Cam Newton's little brother.

Bonus: Howard is coached by Mike London who is the former UVA coach (and was also on DJ Durkin's original staff at Maryland).

Bonus #2: Howard's Safties Coach? None other than Michigan's own CATO JUNE! He's also the Assistant Recruiting Coordinator.

Following the ticker last night, this one jumped out at me.  UNLV isn't exactly a power, but Howard has been bad at the FCS level for a long time, and this was a road game to boot.

Good to see for London after the UVA job didn't go according to plan.

Eh, I'm sure Liberty will get their chance to lose plenty of games this year. It's just nice that Baylor is completely out of the competitive CFB picture this year and can slide back into irrelevancy for the time being. Liberty is a defenite step down from a P5 program and that AD is toxic to schools that matter. I'm sure he will fade into obscurity there eventually.

Apparently, Liberty's victory over Baylor last night was the biggest upset in the last ten years until Howard knocked off UNLV, becoming the biggest (point spread) upset ever.  I saw multiple spreads for the Baylor game listed, but one had the Bears as a 34.5 pt. favorite.  Liberty won 48-45.

I know that Baylor has had plenty of turmoil, but pundits seemed to think that they'd have a solid year.  Impossible to feel sorry for them, of course.

Just below the Howard article, there was an ESPN video posted with a video story that said: Scott Van Pelt likes Florida State as an underdog taking the points.

That video has been removed.

To be fair the Michigan App St line was off the board ,but the "line was 53.5 at one point"  (ended up 45.5) but people couldnt bet it,according to a few sourses ive seen before.

I cant remember the other game, but there have been two teams that were at one point a 50+ point favorite that ended up losing the games, they were taken off the board,so people couldnt bet those two games.I wanna say it was Oklahoma

So the nightmare will live forever in a few regards.

The Wolverines opened the week as 45 1/2-point favorites to beat the Minutemen, the largest recorded Michigan point spread in school history.

They would get blown out in the MEAC, even though they've sent guys to the NFL.  London is a quality coach and we all know Cato June played the position he's coaching and played it well.  Looks like they finally have the right coaching staff in place.  And I assume Cam's little bro is pretty good.

Howard is. How is UNLV in ANY SITUATION a 45 point favorite?

I always feel like if you are going to make a ton of money gambling, week 1 is when you need to do it.

they also beat Idaho State by 72 in 2015.

Those were both "3 wins or less" FCS teams that they beat.  So in that context, UNLV -45 doesn't seem ridiculous.  Howard was 2-9 in 2017, you just presume they'll be bad in 2017 also (they may not be).

UNLV visits Columbus in a few weeks. That will be ugly.

for Mich-App St but it is incorrect. Only about 1/3 of the sports books had the game but among those that did, the spread ranged from 23.5 to 27 pt. Not even close to the biggest upset based upon point spread.

He isn't nearly the same athlete as Cam. Also, his measurables are WAY less appealing. Caylin is 5'11 185, per his 247 profile (probably outdated at this point), Cam is 7 inches taller and has some 50 pounds on him. Cam was one of the top QBs in the country in 2007. Caylin barely cracked top 2000 for all recruits. 247 had him as a 2 star, while the composite had him a 3 star. FWIW, and this is pure speculation, he may have wanted to play QB (recruiting profile lists him as an athlete), which would definitely have pigeon holed him based on size alone. That, and maybe he just wasn't that good. Sparq was only 78.66 and he runs a 4.81. 4.4 shuttle and 33" vert. Nothing elite about this profile I guess

Good God... $100 would have won you $60,000. $50 would get you $30,000. I just know somebody out there put down some money as a joke and actually hit!
