OT: Friday Night Drinking Thread

Submitted by DFW_Michigan_Man on
In honor of the soon to be released 2015 Founder's KBS and being snowed in (not because of the snow but shitty Texas drivers), cracking a couple of the remaining 2014 vintage to unwind!

I discovered a new (to me) ridiculously hoppy brew... Lagunitas Little Sumpin' Ale.

I call your shitty Texas drivers and raise you a California tagged minivan in Denver straddling 2 lanes (on the left of course) of I-70 in a foot of snow.

In any state are generally terrible drivers. They generally. Occupy the speed lane while driving at exactly the speed limit. At some point in time one of them will begin to pass another vehicle of the same body style. Then you are really stuck in hell and need to get aggressively angry at the wheel

at the University of Chicago's homecoming last fall.  Mighty yummy.  And the school sponsored the tailgate.  And the Lagunitas brew selection.  On campus.  At the stadium!  They may no longer be the Monsters of the Midway, but dang, they make sure you have a good time.

Oh, yeah, Shiner White Wing tonight.

Had a few '14s this week. Looking forward to KBS day in two weeks.

Picked up some Goodnight Bodacious and Pt5. Might be facing it for tomorrow. Still have work to do tonight.

Atwater Brewery's Vanilla Java Porter, then switching to my favorite cheap beer, Genny Creme Ale. All the while listening to some old-school vocal jazz.

Pretty good way to spend a Friday night.

I will be drinking tonight, because tomorrow my family gets on a plane bound for somewhere that is warm. Goodbye polar vortex and I hope you are gone by the time I get home.

Having been rather bummed about the death of Leonard Nimoy, I cracked open some Sierra Nevada Nooner Pilsner and raised a glass to a very good actor, director, writer and activist. I am watching a bit of "Star Trek" in his honor, but we shall switch to "Mission: Impossible" and his guest appearances later on this evening.

I'll be out in the Final Frontier tonight, embarking on a mini-tour of the Solar System, starting with Venus:

 ,

after which I will move on to Mercury:

,

before finally being "sling-shotted" by the Sun's gravity all the way out to Jupiter:

.

Unfortunately, this trip does not include Mars

...which I am still In Search Of.

Rest in peace, Leonard Nimoy.  You truly inspired me.

Live Long and Prosper, Spock, forever in our memories.

I have to say this series has been something of a disappointment. Mercury was okay and Mars may have been good for those who enjoy the malty-as-hell DIPAs (which I do not). Haven't opened my Jupiter yet but have heard it's also "okay". Venus was a downright disaster! The next two however, do seem to he promising. Saturn, a barrel-aged Barley wine and Neptune, a hopefully barrel-aged stout.

the Mars DIPA.  Hadn't heard about the Bells Planet series until Venus was released, but i had since heard that the Mars was pretty good/not great.

You are absolutely right about the Venus---it's downright awful.  Fruity/sour/spiced with cardamom and vanilla beans must be an acquired taste, and I'm not going to acquire it!   I still have 2 left out of my 6-pack; I tried aging it a few months and then chilling it to near freezing before drinking it tonight, and it still tasted awful.

But the Mercury Belgian I just had was pretty pleasant.  But then again, all things being relative, it had to be a lot better than the Venus.  Next up tonight is the Jupiter Brown Ale.

Brown Ale used to be one of my favorite styles some 8-10 years ago, but I've drifted away, not having one for several months at this point.

Like you, I'm really looking forward to the release of the Saturn Barleywine.  It sounds like it should be strong and tasty.

Yea, Mars was probably good and worth it to some. So this year was the first time I tried Oracle, their "limited", at least in Iowa, double IPA and I was let down. Mars came out pretty soon after Oracle and was on the same level, for me, and not pleasant. Again, these malt-forward DIPAs are not my forte but I suppose those who do like that style of IPA may have thought Mars was good and you may have in fact enjoyed it (though it'd be a bit late to find out!). I do hope Jupiter is good, or at least decent. Hopefully the next two turn this series around! On a positive note tomorrow night a place down here is tapping a load of Bell's beer and Blacknote is one of them...looking forward to enjoying some of that nectar!

Tonight for me.  Have never been a big fan, but tonight I have a Dragon's Milk and a Bourbon County from Goose Island.  Will see which is better.

Just received Lock Stock and Barrel 13 and Willet 8. I would rather open them with friends, but we will see what happens tonight. I wonder if it would be thread worthy to suggest a hall rental and everyone bring 12 of their favorite beers and or bottle of their spirit for an informal tasting in Ann Arbor maybe with a tv to watch our NIT run begin. Everyone could share their best.

Yessir. Found a recipe online awhile back, scavenged the ingredients when I could, and began brewing finally this afternoon. Calls for a 24-36 hour wait until a Cauliflower like head of foam rises to the surface. Making enough for 3 twelve packs. If I like it I'm gonna brew up a larger batch next time.

"Snowed In" in DFW. Nothing fancy. A bunch of Miller Lite and red wine for the wifey. Oh, and bottled water and canned goods in case of the apocalypse
