OT: Ever go to a non-UM bowl game?

Submitted by jimmyshi03 on

So I happen to live in a city, Las Vegas, with a bowl game coming up later this month. Given the likely matchup, I'm sure loads of tickets will be available. I've never actually gone to a bowl game before. Has anyone gone to one in which Michigan wasn't involved and what was your experience like?

I went to the 2003 Sugar Bowl when becuase of my secondary team affiliation - UGA. We played Florida State. I also had a free place to stay one block off Bourbon Street. I can't remember much of the bowl game day because I was insanely hungover. I left my drink with someone on the street the night before so I could go inside a bar and use the bathroom...and that wasn't a good idea (thanks college invincibleness). Or it could have been the hurricanes with 180 proof rum or whatever...but anyways. The game was fun they sold alcohol and it was a pretty raucous crowd. I managed to be able to get up and cheer like 2/3 through the game but the people drinking beer around me was hard to stomach. But, again, it is New Orleans so...probably anything would be fun?

We are considering going to Nashville this year if UGA gets the Music City bowl since my bro lives downtown.

Yeah. Used to live in NOLA, would grab cheap bowl tickets if available. Also, went to Indiana at the Pinstripe Bowl last year.... I love going to other folks games.... just cheer for chaos and good football.

We thought Michigan was coming and bought tix before the expected rush. Still repped the good guys. Talked to a FB rep who noticed the M shirts. Sat on NU side. Fans were chill. Left at halftime because cranky  (ex)wife was cranky.

Va Tech beat Texas -- Jim Druckenmiller vs. James Brown ("The hardest working man in the Southwest Conference") in what I believe was the last game in the history of the SWC. Latter game was Hawaii bombing UAB in the June Jones era. They hit the over in the 2nd quarter -- always fun when Hawaii is in the game. Plus, it's Hawaii, so there's that.

live in Atlanta, been there twice (Birmingham AL) - wife went to Pitt, daughter went to Ole Miss.  went once when they played each other (2013) after having taken the wife to her first Pitt bowl game in 2011.

2013 was strange - pulled between wife and daughter on who to root for.  I wore my Michigan gear.

I grew up in El Paso and the Sun Bowl is a cool spot to hit up and tickets are usually easy to get (because El Paso is a terrible fan base and doesn't really care about any teams outside of UT, Texas Tech and the Cowboys)

I saw the cool comeback win by Oklahoma over Iowa one year and was also at the awful 3-0 game with Oregon State and i forget who the other team was.

This year I have attended my first two games as a neutral, Stanford@ND, and the MAC Championship the other day (though I wasn't quite a true neutral for the MAC game #RTB). In general, I highly recommend attending football games as a neutral. Lots of fun, low stress. I just figure I might as well go to as many football games in my life as I can. Already looking at the 2017 bye week to see what game I might be able to go to then (If WMU's MAC opener is at home I'll probably go to that).

We were in Florida and got cheap tix to 08 Champs Sports Bowl to see Wisconsin get throttled by FSU. Stadium was garbage, FSU fans were garbage, game was garbage, we left in the 3rd quarter.

Went to the Peach Bowl on New Year's Eve in 1985 when the game was played at Atlanta Fulton County stadium, an outdoor multi-purpose facility that you don't see much of anymore. Weather was cold and rainy and Illinois came from ahead to lose to Army. It was a great game. I'd recommend attending any game involving a service academy. Seeing the old guys in their great coats with the "USMA CLASS OF ____" armbands was cool...great way to connect with history in a way you don't get to see every day.

Second time was the same game, only it was called the Chick Fil-A Bowl and it was New Year's Eve 2008 (I think) between Georgia Tech, who always suck when they get to "stay home" to play in that bowl and LSU, who weren't as "damn strong" as they were the previous year. Game was played in the comfort of the Georgia Dome (it was windy and cold outside) and it sucked basically for every reason the 1985 game was good.

The allure of the Rose Bowl is nice but I prefer the smaller bowls in a lot of ways. Fan events are much smaller - you actually get to meet the team and coaches. I had a delightful conversation with Tommy Tuberville at an event before their 2014 bowl game in Annapolis. Hell, I stayed at the Bowling Green team hotel during one of their bowl games when I was a student. I went across the street to grab some Burger King and literally the team ate the store empty. So I went down the street to Wendy's and grabbed a late night burger and was able to chat with some fellow students who happened to be donning helmets and pads a couple days later. Fat chance of those happening in the playoff - the players and coaches are behind lines of security and media.

2003 Continental Tire Bowl in Charlotte, NC at Erickson Stadium. UVA vs Pittsburg. UVA wins 23-16, shutting down Larry Fitzgerald in his final college game. Matt Schaub hits Heath Miller for a 53 yard TD to open scoring. It was fun just being in a different city and the events were great.

My dad got comp tickets to the Liberty Bowl one year when I was a kid (we lived in Memphis). It was the '83 Battle of the Catholics edition between Notre Dame and Boston College. Pretty cool birthday present for a middle-schooler, even though it was cold as (a hockey) puck.

I remember the Ole Miss band came out at half time and the recorded voice of the band director said they would now play the National Anthem and they lit into Dixie. Confederate flags came out and a group of local got into fist fights in with the Ole Miss fans in the stands. A fun time was had by all.

Attended both the Poinsettia Bowl and Holiday Bowl the past few years. Saw Brady Hoke's last game with SDSU and a Baylor-UCLA matchup. Qualcomm is a nice venue and San Diego is still nice in the winter.
