OT: ESPN's Mike and Mike Are Breaking Up

Submitted by BursleyHall82 on

They've been together on ESPN since 2000, but Mike and Mike are breaking up, it was announced today. Mike Greenberg will host his own show starting in the fall, and Mike Golic will  host a new show with Trey Wingo.

Personally, I only listen to Mike and Mike when Sam and Ira go to commercial. I find the show to be pretty vanilla, and WAY too many live reads of commercials and sponsor name drops. I know that ESPN is hurting for money, but man.

Been reported for like a year. Besides, Mike and Mike were terrible, overwrought caricatures of who they were playing after 18 years. Greeny thinks he's better than everyone, and Golic is ruh ruh ruh ruh when I played football.

..."caricatures" has struck me as the perfect description of what the show had evolved into...worse is the insertion of ESPN's weak version of "expert" opinion, like two-time face plant coach Herm Edwards, or the unapologetically nepotistic rise of Golic, Jr...that's just hubris and a total disconnect with your audience. ESPN (not that they're alone in this) has led the charge of grotesque product saturation, gross overpayment of their "talent" and dilution of both...the biggest challenge to the old proven "leave 'em wanting more" is that it's less beneficial to those with their hand in the jar right now.

Not new news. But I clicked the article because I was curious about Greenberg's replacement. I'm not sure the show could be more generic, but they'll be exactly that with Trey Wingo. One company man replaces another.

Seems to be a lot of hate on this board over them (seems mgoblog hates any national media pundit, though).  I do agree that they were kind of ESPN fanboys and  there was too much fluff (ex: like talking about what Golic's wife was going to make for dinner that night).  That being said, I still consider them radio icons to be on the radio for that long and respect their success in an industry that is hard to stick around for a real long-term.    I can't say I tuned into them every morning on the way to work,  but did so from time to time.   I will say it's going to be weird tuning into ESPN radio on weekday mornings and them not being on.

I guess the only ESPN radio show I'll listen to moving forward is Freddie Coleman (I guess they call it Freddie and Fitz now)

I love the fact that they basically talk about everything except sports. And when they do, it's generally very light-hearted.

There are some serious talks on there on occasion, but it's fun 99 percent of the time. Greg Cote is a total listen on Tuesdays.

My favorite show as well because it isn't all sports takes that have been recycled all day long. I just can't stand to listen to other shows out there that will talk NBA for 3 straight hours.

of MGoBlog get the show. I thought I was in kind of a minority here (which is why I hang out on r/LeBatardShow when not here.) Dan, Stugotz, and the Shipping Container full of frightened refugees bring me joy every single day. Granted, listening to "regular" sports talk radio feels like more of a chore now, but the lighthearted way in which they handle sports makes it a fun listen. Now if only they could get Jim Harbaugh back for "Toe-Tapper or no Toe-Tapper"

I am actually quite surprised that this is the opinion of some on this board. No disrespect to those who are fans, but I just cannot fathom how people enjoy the LeBatard show. I just find both him and Gotz to be very obnoxious, without really having anything to say.

Although I will admit that I occasionally listen to their run down of the poll questions at the end of each show and I love hearing how much of a random tangent they get off on throughout the show without having any context whatsoever for what the hell they are talking about.

"Hey, Golic?"

"Yes, Greenie?"

"Did you know that I'm a limp-wristed pussy?"

"I did not know that....HEY! LET'S SEE HOW MUCH BACON MY KID AND I CAN EAT!!!"
