OT: ESPN's Chris Mortensen has Stage IV Throat Cancer

Submitted by translator82 on

ESPN's Chris Mortensen has been diagnosed with stage IV throat cancer and is off the air indefinitely to undergo treatment. Obviously thoughts and prayers to him and his family. Needless to say that cancer sucks: It's affected our family the last few months but, thankfully, the family member's outlook is good. I hope Mortensen can beat it back as well.

I'm in the field (head and neck surgeon). It depends on where it is. Base of tongue/tonsil is different and much better than larynx/ piriform sinus for quality of life and prognosis. Quality of life is definitely affected. I tell my pts that the treatment is generally awful. However many develop a different outlook on life and are happy to be alive. Salivation is dependent on the rad onc planning to save the salivary glands but this can be difficult. Stage IV is dependent on many factors. Not necessarily a death sentence anymore.

Tongue, floor of mouth, buccal, alveolar cancer.  Big issue in baseball.  Tony Gwynn, Curt Schilling among others are ones that have been affected.  Tobacco is the biggest risk factor and is synergistic with alcohol.

More commonly now as there is less tobacco use (depending on the socioeconomic class), HPV is the big cause.  (As someone had mentioned above, from licking and stuff...).  Always a little uncomfortable when discussing this part of why they got the cancer.  Hopefully this'll get better as people are vaccinated for HPV.

That said, my wife has stage 4 breast cancer that has metastasized in her lungs. She has one tumor 2 cm in diameter in her lungs...on a day to day basis her only issues are side effects from chemo...but her cancer can become resistant to current treatment and get out of control quickly. Fuck Cancer...it is almost getting ridiculous how many people are getting cancer and passing from battles with cancer these days.

I'm an MGoDoctor and did a residency in this field (otolaryngology--head and neck surgery) at UM. Stage IV is bad. Statistically speaking, his chances are not good. He may be lucky and make it, but even if he does, he will likely have some nasty side effects, such as difficulty eating, speaking, etc.

Hearing this just plain sucks. I haven't always been a big Mort fan, but instances like this help remind us that, no matter what team we cheer for, we are all human and in the same boat. A good reminder for us all to be civil and respectful to everybody.

Prayers and well wishes to Mort, his family, and loved ones.

I did notice his absence this past weekend with Schefter.  Looked like they had McShay filling in for him. Was pretty awkward actually. Guess this explains why.  Very sad news.

sad to hear. best wishes to him and his family on this fight.    as the number of oral cancer cases rises and smokers decrease, i think there is some credence to HPV being a common cause.   scary on so many levels.

Cancer sucks. My mother just found out two mornings ago that she is cancer free when two months prior the doctors thought they just caught stage 4 bone cancer. She previously had breast cancer, so it was already a huge threat. Whatever showed up in November is thankfully now gone.

Anyway, I had a conversation with her after we found out the news about how blessed our family is to get more time with her, and how blessed she is to be able to continue her life healthy even though at any moment it could come back. But sadly not everyone is that fortunate. We will never understand why her test came back negative and someone like Chris was dealt the other hand. It really isn't fair, but it definitely makes you feel closer to those going through these things. I've said more prayers for people I have no relation with whatsoever in the last two years than I had in my entire life prior.

Something about dealing with cancer or someone extremely close with you dealing with cancer forces you to sympathize with people on a whole different level who are going through those same things. Hope and pray for healing and recovery. Noone deserves to go through this.

That means it has spread from his throat. I hope the best for him and his family but I wouldn't be making christmas plans.  Cancer sucks for anyone, but kid cancer sucks worse than Ohio.

she went to UM hospital where they told her they were going to cut out everything from her esophogus to the base of her tongue and she would eat through a tube for the rest of her life.  She said no way and went to St. Joseph's Hospital in Ypsi and found an Oncologist that shrunk the tumor with chemo and radiation and then surgery to remove it.  She was cancer free for a couple of years, but then I came home from work one night and I found her dead on the bedroom floor.  She had passed several hours before I got home.

The autopasy performed at the hospital here in Jackson lost the tissue samples and never gave me a cause of death.  They called it "natural causes".  She was 53, I was 25.  They said years of smoking and drinking caused it.  She did a lot of both.

Cancer sucks ballz!

Hopes and prayers for Mort.

I saw this on Twitter right before I saw this thread-  very sad to hear indeed and hopefully he can kick cancer's ass since that's all that cancer deserves.

This has been a rather full, unfortunate week of cancer news. Hopefully, Mortensen's story can have a happier ending. Thoughts to him and his family and friends and colleagues in this time.

with my Mom but told her instead she had six mos. probably knowing she might last a year. They always give you worse case senario. I think it is so you won't come back saying hey my parent only lived for 3 mos. and you said six. My Mom lasted a little over a year and we called her a fighter. Then we somehow felt a little better calling her a fighter. In my opinion it(Throat Cancer) has to be top 5 bad at stage 4.I  know there is no good cancer, I personally watched her suffocate to death from the swelling in her throat near the end. In the beginning she could not speak and had to write everything she wanted to tell us down on paper. Because of failed attempts to rid her of it. She died during the1st gulf war back in '92. It still hurts like hell to write and remember that roller coaster of a nightmare.

I have to agree with every person whole heartedly who wrote FUCK CANCER. there's no other way to put it.

GcMaf is a promising new treatment, but it's hard to find somewhere that does it.  Lost a family member to cancer a month ago.  F cancer.

Anyone know the severity of throat cancer? I know stage IV cancer isn't good, no matter what cancer you have. But, is it beatable? Is it a life threatening type? I really don't know. Hope he's ok.

My mom is a 10 year breast cancer survivor. She's awesome. So proud of her. But my family has lost a few great people from different types of cancer and lymphoma.

Fuck cancer.

I was just saying I thought his voice changed and was raspy. This is horrible. Poor guy, stage 4 is late in the game. Hope he can fight it or get lucky.

I see a lot of death in my job; accidental, violent, disease-related and natural. I think it's helped me appreciate every day.

Godspeed, little doodle.

My sister passed from FAP four years ago last week. She was 30.

Thankfully we get to babysit her kids often. Her daughter IS HER. I love nothing more than telling them stories about their Momma.

Fuck cancer, indeed. Life changes in a heartbeat, baby. Soak up everyday.... cliche as it may sound.

My brother-in-law actually got penile cancer about 10 years ago. That year he was one of like 6 cases in the nation, so obviously rare. He went to UM and they took care of it and been cancer free ever since. Crazy thing is his wife, my sister-in-law, got breast cancer at the same time so they both had to fight cancer together. She got treatment and has been cancer free since too.
