OT: Do you really want to hurt me? Detroit Lions - 2022 Edition

Submitted by WhatchooTalkin… on November 20th, 2022 at 4:34 PM

Being a lifelong Lions fan has been tough (Thanks Dad!)

I've since passed this on to my eldest son (Thanks Dad!) who is almost 18.

We "sorta" swore off the Lions last year after watching the debacle that was 3-13-1.

But!  The Lions are like the mafia...every time I think I am out, they pull me right back in!

3 Straight wins for the Lions, 2 on the road, and 1 against a 7-2 team today that they beat handily 31-18.

Is it time to pull my Lions gear out of hibernation?  Or do I cower in fear waiting for the next let down?

It helps that there is a lot of parody this year.  Lots of teams with 4 to 7 losses and no team is completely dominant.  The Eagles were thought to be that team but they just lost to the biggest tire fire organization in the NFL (yes I understand the irony of that statement but at least the Lions haven't broken federal laws or anything).

Tried to upload this graphic in OP but it apparently wasn't allowed?  And I can't edit the OP, so here it is.

Let's wait until after the Bills game this week before we get excited.  Winning games is good but these recent opponents have major problems, even the previously 7-2 Giants.

There's no BPONE like Lions BPONE. I was sure they were gonna blow it up 12 with 8 minutes or so left. They've blown leads for 40 years. However, with the way the last draft class appears to have worked out, *maybe* they are on the upswing?  Given where they are in this rebuild, 4-6 is pretty decent progress.

They've gone full rebuild and right now are very young. Last season wasn't surprising and they finished the season playing better. After a poor start this year with more close losses, they now are back on track for what looks like progress.

Expecting them to make the playoffs this year would be foolish. But I like what they have been doing roster-wise going back to offloading Stafford. They have one of the best OLines in the NFL. Now they have a ton of picks coming up in the next draft.

Next year is Campbell's make or break year.

Because it was the same old script.

New regime = excitement...that goes NOWHERE

Regime continues to fail but getting more and more time to "figure it out"....then are finally MERCIFULLY let go and the coaching search begins again in earnest.

New regime = excitement...rinse and repeat.

And sorry, but Campbell has looked overmatched as a coach, almost as bad as Mohrningweg.  So yeah, I gave up last year because it was the SAME. OLD. LIONS.

It's been a long time since I have had any emotional attachment to the Lions.  There isn't anything they can do to piss me off and they are usually incapable of doing anything to make me excited.  Occasionally they do something I find amusing.

Never stop being a fan. A bit numb to bad results when the team has been bad for a long time? Sure. But they’re still my team and I’ll still enjoy their success.

This is an encouraging stretch. I don’t for a second think they’re making the playoffs. But I would like to see progress.

Still a year or two away from looking closely at what pieces they need to be a genuinely competitive playoff team. Ephemera like Goff’s inconsistency must be viewed through that lens. He’s a capable QB that can win some games, isn’t perfect, and won’t win a super bowl. Well, no kidding. Build a team and then figure out stuff like that.

The problem with waiting to figure out the QB position is you could end up like the Colts or the Broncos and have a Super Bowl caliber roster but then you've got no chance of drafting a top tier QB because you're not bad enough to draft in the top 5 picks.  Then, after the roster ages or you lose some of them to free agency, you're back where you started.

The Rams knew this and basically gave up the future of their franchise to get Stafford.  They went all-in for 1 year and it worked.  The Lions may have to do the same if they continue to dawdle regarding the QB position.

My thoughts exactly, but if they keep winning games they're going to have to package some picks and trade up to get him.  Also I'm not so sure Bryce Young won't be ready to go in his first season.  He seems like the kind of guy who could grab control of the job early.

I understand, but that might not be enough.  Looking at the bottom five teams right now the Texans have the worst record in the NFL by a couple game margin and the Panthers have one more loss than the Rams with the same number of wins.  Those are the only teams in the top 10 picks I could see drafting a QB in the first round.  Either the Rams have to keep losing while the Panthers and Texans win a couple games or the Lions will have to trade up past one, possibly both of them.

You also need to watch out for the Falcons, Colts, Commanders, and Saints.  They're right around the Lions in terms of draft position but all of those teams need a new QB.  I wouldn't be surprised if one of them trades up to get one.

I’ve taken the cure and feel much better for it.  Haven’t watched a game in years.  Monday mornings I wake up clear eyed and ready to take on the world.

Don’t be a Lions fan unless you can handle pain and/or are able root for a team without getting emotionally involved and invested in that fandom.

This is business as usual for the Lions. Always a dangerous team once they're basically out of contention and playing with absolutely no pressure.

What Im worried about is now that they're playing their way out of a top pick they'll package the picks from LA & MIN to move up for a QB.

I'm a life-long fan, though my interest is stronger in some periods than others. I have to admit, though, that while I'd like to be hopeful about the rebuild ... I guess I'm not seeing a real basis for enthusiasm. In previous eras there was Barry Sanders and Herman Moore and Scott Mitchell, or Stafford and Megatron and Suh, but ... now?

I mean, is there anything to really build on? It feels like it's still the island of lost toys, which is great -- they're playing hard, and they can win when they get lots of turnovers (as they did today), but ... it's not like I have the feeling, "wow, we're starting to feel like a damned good team!"

Maybe I'm not paying enough attention. Are we only a couple key pieces away? Apparently we have a decent offensive line, so that's something, and Goff is a fighter, if not a star, but ... can anyone tell me what part(s) of the team are genuinely worth getting excited about? Like ... what would need to happen for us to actually contend for a playoff spot next year?

I just feel like we'd need a talent upgrade across the board. Now we're bad-but-no-longer-pathetic. The gulf between that and "good" still seems pretty massive to me.

I consider Lions fandom a fire on a stove that I allow to remain on at a very low setting. I pay attention to the team, its personnel moves etc., I check the scores, and I don't root for any other NFL team.

But I'm not going to regularly invest 3+ hours on watching them every Sunday between September and January (or Thanksgiving for that matter) given that it's likely going to end in disappointment and defeat. Nor am I going to get annoyed or upset by their Ls. The Ls are expected and baked in.

I consider this to be a viable compromise that allows me to maintain an interest in the Lions while also not letting it affect my quality of life.

The current situation is typical Lions IMO, they're going to miss the playoffs so of course they win a bunch of meaningless games to ensure their draft position worsens.

I dont remember seeing a complete game put together like Lions did today. They were exciting to watch even though Goff almost gave it away a couple of times.  The defense is starting to gel together and if they can get a couple of guys in this draft they will be scary in a couple of years.

Michigan won, Lions won and MSU lost…not a bad weekend.
