OT: Clemson's new football facility "Daboland"

Submitted by Maizen on

This is pretty crazy. I find some of the stuff they put (wiffle ball field, bowling alley, etc) completely unnecessary but in terms of the football facility, wow. Got me thinking about the upcoming renovation to Schembechler. I know they've done a few upgrades over the years but really looking forward to seeing how encompassing this weight room renovation is going to be.

Thad Turnipseed is in his first year as Director of Recruting/External Affairs with Clemson. He previously worked for the University of Alabama designing and overseeing $200 million in Athletic projects. This guy is.......interesting

As for the Daboland, some of those things are dumb. A slide indoors? What are you Penn State? Wiffle ball fields wtf? If Clemson can throw this much dough at a football faciltity then I wonder what a new Michigan facility would look like

Awesome facility, but I have to say I don't like were this is taking college athletics. They are supposed to be students not just football players. Seems like facilities like this distances them more from the general student body.
I would much rather see the NCAA allow spring break practice trips and restrict these football only palaces with miniature golf courses and bowling alleys then the other way around.

So what do the other sports teams think about all that fluff?  I know football pays the bills at Clemson, like it does at UM, but all of that strictly for the football teams seems a bit much.  Nice facility, though!

Maybe it is incorrect, but I've heard title 9/fairness used as a reason not to pay players. Ie, if you pay football players the you also have to pay all athletes. Why isn't that an issue here? The football team has access to facilities that are certainly nicer than other athletes.

I am not impressed with the indoor design of the building. waste a lot of space. What the hell with the slide? most football players don't even fit onto the slide. too small.

I might get some shit for this too, but I'm not super impressed. They can't really help their colors, but it makes the interior of the building look awful. It also, like you mentioned, looks like it was designed for 15 year olds.

Oregon's IMHO is much nicer and something Michigan should try to copy.

Oregon's facility just has such nicer interiors etc... Clemson's facility reminds me of a late 1990s/2003 McMansion just full of expensive, but not-so-great looking crap.

I was to mentioned Oregon's design is way better, too, likely more expensive? However, seeing our Crisler center renovation. I think Michigan AD has better taste on how the interror design could be. I am not too worried.

In your youttube video, Denard Robinson is everywehere, haha!

I can't wait until a guy comes out of the nap room a little groggy and late for a meeting, takes a header, and falls down the slide ending his career.

I bet this is more for the recruits than the current players. They'll probably have team building things like wiffle ball games and movie nights and stuff, no doubt. Where it will really resonate is with the 17 or 18 year old kid that doesn't see this kind of thing at Auburn, Georgia, or Florida.

but does anyone else every look at these places and just kind of shake their heads and are amazed at the amount of money this country spends on sports especially at the college level?

I am as big of a football, especially college football, fan as there is, but sometimes wonder where our priorities are. That huge beaufitul facility is just for the football team, the average Clemson student can't even get in the door of that building.  I don't know but wouldn't it make sense to use the money for a research facility on the campus that could possibly have a positive effect on everyone in the country????

Since they can't pay the players, the trend is to take all the stuff that teenagers pay for themselves  - like video games, bowling, movies, etc. - and provide it for them for free.

It makes some sense.

Of course, Clemson pays their players anyway, so I don't know why they even needed to bother with this stuff.
