OT - Cell Phone Questions - Equipment/Company/Plan

Submitted by XM - Mt 1822 on February 6th, 2022 at 6:08 PM

Mates,

As we wait with bated breath for more drama from Schembechler Hall, more news about why Gattis left, who will be our new OC, and what the shuffling of coaching chairs look like, please allow me to interrupt for a minute.  The topic is cell phones, a necessary tool in the 21 st century arsenal and literally every one of us has one.  My questions come about because we are getting to the point of looking for new plans and/or replacing a couple of phones for the older kids.  Questions are as follows:

1.  Who is your carrier and what type of plan do you have - how many GB's/month, what cost, etc?  Do you use all the GB's you get?  Would you recommend it to others or is it more of 'I dunno, we've just had it for a while'?

2.  What type of phone do you have and is it good/bad/mediocre?  I will add that we have bought used phones from 'swappa.com' and have had very good luck getting pretty recent equipment that functions just fine, at steep discounts.  If you have 5G service, will your older phones still function with it?

Thank you for your input and maybe many others will get some good information out of this.

Don't forget the ladies hoops team tips off @ 6:30, big game v. Iowa.  Go Blue!

Well this is all good to read. I'm moving back to the US soon and someone had said plans in America are more expensive than in Korea but from what people are saying they seem just about the same.

Firstnet for those that qualify is top notch.  Sub of At&T. Unlimited data plans and priority service, (Think Mich Stadium)....but only for first responders/emergency folks unfortunately.

In terms of plans... If you're using Verizon or AT&T you're paying too much. Both companies have discount brands (Visible or Cricket) that give you the exact same network for significantly less $$ than their full priced parent companies offer.

Personally I'm with Cricket, $35 a month, 10GB at full-speed and all the other regular stuff unlimited on a month to month contract so I can cancel or switch at anytime if I see something better.

I've been with Sprint since some buddies were making near 6 figures working part-time selling cellphones and plans from a mall kiosk back in the late 90's. Sprint is now TMobile. I pay 104 all in for unlimited everything for two lines.

I don't think this is an especially terrible deal. I don't think it's an especially great deal. The TMobile network is considerably better than the former Sprint network. But I'm a city boy so 99% of my service is fine. Only when we travel to the farm do I have 0% network, but me not staring at my phone while visiting my in-laws probably saved my marriage. So there's that.

Recently, I was renegotiating my Xfinity/Comcast deal and the sales person was a lovely south Florida retiree and honestly, she was quite the seller. I've never even considered changing plans. But she almost got me over to Verizon on a promo they're doing with Xfinity.

So, Verizon network. Unlimited data on my phone. Wifes phone and a 3rd line sharing 4GB. For $60 a month.  A couple different things in play here, my wife's phone on our plan sits in a basket uncharged. She exclusively uses her work phone, but we are keeping her number. (Paying money for this privilege mind you). And there's some weird idea of independence from work that she wants to feel by keeping her phone. Seems like a relatively steep monthly price to pay for a "feeling" but who am I?  The 3rd line would be to give to my wife's mom and just take that off her plate. 4GB shared between my wife's phone that is in a perma-off state and my Mother-in-Law who doesn't do a lot of TikToking would have been plenty. That said, Verizon has no coverage on the farm and ultimately that's what killed the deal here.

Additionally, this deal would have lowered my cable bill by $10 a month for a year. (So 120 bucks)  Plus there was a 200 phone voucher per traded in phone... I think. It was something like that 200 or 250.

I could and can still switch. I would be saving 40% on my monthly rate. But, moving off of a company I've been with for almost 25 years is also something I am not likely to do on a whim.

I'm employed by a cell phone company. Find what works best know your area for best price.

Best phone deals too. Make the reps from carriers beat their competitors.
