OT: Brigid Kosgei shatters women’s marathon world record
When she’s not busy breaking women into tiny glass pieces, Brigid Kosgei breaks records.
this morning, at the Chicago Marathon, she broke Paula Radcliffe’s long-standing marathon record by 80 seconds.
Quite the weekend for Kenyan runners, I’d say.

This has already been posted (kind of).

Is is wrong that I'm shocked a white woman actually held this record before it was broken by a Kenyan?

Not wrong, but...women haven’t been competing in the marathon as long as men. Roughly sixty years’ difference. So it goes to say that a lot of wealthy countries’ athletic programs had the resources to prop up men and women for longer until the African countries caught up in terms of training and resources. It just took a little longer for women, I suppose.
of note, the last European to hold the men’s WR was in 1985. An American held it for a few years in the 2000s, but he had emigrated from Morocco and held the record as a citizen there as well.

I haven't been alive 60 years. I assumed the Kenyans owned every long distance record. That record was only 16 years old.

No, not at all. Humans are vastly different in their abilities across many areas.

How dare you sir.

80 seconds is huge, I've got to imagine that the conditions must have been perfect.

Yep, temps in the 40s, cloudy, no precipitation, a nice breeze. I think it's pretty much exactly what the elite runners would want.

If it’s uncomfortably cold for spectators, it’s perfect for runners.

This accomplishment is WAY more impressive than Kipchoge's.

They’re both incredible. But you’re right in that hers probably won’t get as much attention, unfortunately.

Thanks for the laugh, +1 for the recovery. Hopefully this weekend can serve as motivation for the next generation of great runners. A lot of great accomplishments this weekend

Kosgei is doped to the gills. She was running in the 2:40s in 2015 and her agent - Federico Rosa - is a known promoter of EPO usage in his athletes. In the same league as Jama Aden. He represents Asbel Kiprop, Rita Jeptoo, Jemima Sumagong, Matthew Kisorio, etc. No need to get excited about this one.

Well, I certainly would expect a fish to be on SOMETHING to be able to run that fast.

Fall is a great time to run.

Fall I also a great time to be doped to the gills.
