OT: best Weird Al Song

Submitted by JDeanAuthor on March 25th, 2020 at 9:19 AM

So I saw Weird Al's rendition of Classical Gas HERE and it got me to thinking: what's your favorite Weird Al song?

It can be a parody, an original done in a particular group's style, or a polka.

I think mine is "Jerry Springer" (parody of "One Week" by the Barenaked Ladies)

I like his recent ones, Word Crimes and Aluminum Foil.  But it's hard to beat the classic MJ parodies.  Fat and Eat It just have such a nice continued theme.

Bedrock Anthem (Give it Away Now by RHCP) - especially for its video and this rhyme at the end "Barney Rubble laughin like a hyena, Barney Rubble, what a litte wiena. Where's Wilma, anybody seen her? Got a baby elephant vaccuum cleaner!"

Headline News and Smells like Nirvana and Gump are great too. As is "Lasagne" (La Bamba).

All Hail Weird Al.

Great question.  So many great songs.  I am old, so I gotta go with "Dare To Be Stupid."  It's a Devo parody that Devo front man Mark Mothersbaugh felt was "more Devo than Devo."

For something more recent, "Sports Song" is brilliant.

“One More Minute“ is not only the greatest Weird Al song ever, it is the greatest breakup song by any artist ever.

I couldn’t help feeling a tinge of sadness when I got married, knowing I’d never get to sing that song with any real passion again.

Was just about to mention One More Minute, but you folks beat me to the punch.  My other favorites:  Christmas at Ground Zero, You Don't Love Me Anymore, and any of the Polka medleys.  Polka Your Eyes Out is a standout for me.  Good song selection, and amazing drum solo!  Went to his show at Hill Auditorium in '96 or '97 (my Junior year) by myself because none of my f'ing friends/housemates had any interest in going.  Weird Al FOREVER!!!

I always really liked "It's All About the Pentiums" personally.  I thought he just NAILED the parody aspect of that while staying true to the song it was inspired from.  Underrated all the way around.

The Saga Begins is amazing especially considering Weird Al wrote it before the movie came out; it was entirely based on internet rumors and spoilers, and just about completely accurate.

I was literally thinking about this over the weekend and went on a Weird Al binge on Spotify.  I think I came to the conclusion that "Polka your eyes out" is my favorite... or maybe "The Saga Begins".

'You Don't Love Me Anymore' by miles for me.  If you haven't heard it yet, do yourself a favor.

'Another One Rides the Bus' also an oldie but a goodie.

Any answer that isn’t pretty fly for a rabbi, might be wrong. If only for the line “his parents pay the moyl, but he gets to keep the tip”. Love the original, but that line in weird al’s version always makes me laugh.

So many brilliant parodies it’s hard to choose one.  I’ve always liked “Rye or the Kaiser”, which is from “In 3-D” and one few people I know seem to know/recall.  It’s based off “Eye of the Tiger”, by Survivor.  If you’ve never heard it, go ahead and treat yourself.
