I find pizza snobs to be incredibly annoying. Of course there are tons of places that are better than the chain pizza places, but if you mock and ridicule anyone who ever picks ups Dominos or Pizza Hut on the way home because it’s not real pizza like “insert obscure pizza place from my home town” you’re a pizza snob and a dork.

Not finding a ton of snobs here, just people interested in the best pies. Calling people dorks, though; that's certainly creative. Pizza Hut, in my experience, can be downright bad; Dominos. . . okay in a pinch, but the people behind them. . . bums.

When someone says something is pretentious or snobby I immediately think they are a rube.  "Someone appreciates something I don't understand so they are a snob."

And obviously there is good pizza outside of big cities, but they aren't Dominos. Dork.

Your point is fair, especially since their is no accounting for different palettes and tastes. Even I like Dominos, Pizza Hut, and Caesar’s, but it is really hard to say that any of the chains compare favorably with the recent phenomenon of haute cuisine pizzerias. It might only be a popularity contest, but it is almost a consensus that the biggest thing going for the chains is consistency rather than top-flight quality that rivals the best pizzerias, even if some of the chains do offer some  good quality food.

If you are into doughy, Pizza Hut-style, and/or are ignorant of non-chain pizzerias then Cottage Inn is fine. The ambiance is probably the nicest thing about Cottage Inn.  Otherwise, pretty much every place else blows it away.  Buddy’s is of course the standard for Detroit-style. That said it’s really hard to beat the New Haven pizzerias. They are usually considered the best even by those who tenaciously hold to their local favorites out of hometown pride.

Well shit, phony elite know nothingism was definitely not my intent.

New Haven, CT often has multiple restaurants in the top 10-15 pizzas in the nation, so odds are that they would be better than just about anything on a college town pizza list.

Sorry to offend ?‍♂️
**Thank you for editing out your comment calling my comment “phony elite known nothingism”. No hard feelings ?

New Haven is pretty much famous for two things: Yale and Pizza. If you don’t believe it check the articles on best pizza places in the U.S. Sorry, but cities like Omaha, Tempe, Baton Rouge, et al typically don’t have pizzerias that consistently score highly.  Not my opinion, this from people who really know pizza.

In fairness, their niche market is the 3-5am heavily, heavily intoxicated college student, and they charged $1 per slice.  I think they can be forgiven for not creating the best possible pie.  Or maybe the last time you went you found yourself outside the target demographic?

Pizza Toro in Durham (Duke) is totally accurate. I don't love the restaurant as it's tiny and too hip for my comfort, but the pizza is really excellent (Neopolitan-style). They also have Abita root beer on tap, which is a big plus for me (a non-drinker). I more often go to Pompieri, which is the same style of pizza, almost as good, and has a much more relaxed vibe- like a kids assemble their own pizza night (pre-Covid). Durham is a great food town these days.

Red Zeppelin in Baton Rouge LA is real good, good wings also. When I go back to LSU I will try the place they recommend.

I will have to try some of these in my college football travels.

This list seems like that map of "America's Favorite Fast Food Chains" that circulated on the internet for a while as troll-bait, where "Jollibee" was Michigan's favorite fast food. (It's a Fillipino fast food chain; there isn't one in Michigan). I suspect the pizza list-maker could have done better by just taking #1 from the Yelp pizza listing for each city.

As for Madison, I guess I understand why they picked Ian's, but Ian's is really just store-brand NYPD (I say that as an NYPD devotee since it's opening in 1996 or 1997). The best pizza in Madison is Salvatore's.

Both of my sons went to Wisconsin and each lived close to Greenbush. As I recall, they both said good things about it, but I don't remember anything specific. My younger son, a senior, currently lives just on the other side of Regent from Greenbush, and he's the one who took me to Salvatore's (technically, "Salvatore's Tomato Pies," even though I don't think they have the Jersey-style tomato pie).

I vaguely recall during that era bells had a Tuesday night special where larges with a couple toppings were like $2 delivered or something? I think you had to buy a full price 2 liter of soda though so total bill with tip approached $10.  Loss leader to gain new clientele who might buy on days other than Tuesday perhaps

Didn’t know it was gone.  Bells was cool. The real pizza I miss is a dollar slice from Backroom after the bars.  That was the best.  The saddest I have ever been, (not really) was dropping a slice face down walking back to my house...
