There is no conceivable way that the Durkin hire should be above the Georga/Smart hire.. none.
Smart has way more accolades as a DC than Durkin does and is going to a school in the weak division of the SEC whereas Durkin is going to a school with 0 football tradition in the strong division of the B1G.

+1 good point, but there's a difference between best hires and best jobs. Maryland got a great hire because the job is pretty bad as you explained.
December 4th, 2015 at 11:56 PM ^
Yeah but I don't think Durkin is the best hire that Maryland could have had. You still have young head coaches like Matt Rhule at Temple who could easily be picked up somewhere.

if Richt decided he was interested in the Maryland job, all he had to do was basiclaly show up.

To the extent your point is "Georgia's a good job; Maryland's a shiity job"--I don't think that should be relevant..
But if we're bending the rules, I'm going with Les Miles. /He already has the #1 recruiting class!

Why don't you go ahead and list some of these Nick Saban DC's who left for head coaching jobs. I'll save you some time, here is the list.
1. Kirby Smart DC 2008-2015
I don't kmow who will be the better head coach but as for who was the better DC, it was Smart and it's not even close.

Miami with Richt
VaTech with Fuentes
Durkin deserves no mention at all as he is a complete unknown as a head coach.

Durkin could be a good, great, or terrible coach but he has no track record to predict that.
December 4th, 2015 at 10:41 PM ^
a few years ago everyone thought Florida won the coaching sweepstakes when they pulled Muschamp away from Texas.
December 5th, 2015 at 7:00 AM ^
Maryland should make? If he turns out to be the next great head coach, they'll have him for 7 or 8 years before he heads to an elite program and they will win way beyond expectations. If not, they aren't any worse off.
For that matter, shouldn't Michigan have made that type of hire instead of Brady Hoke, if no top 10 options were available?
December 4th, 2015 at 11:38 PM ^
They managed to land probably the top coach coming from the mid-major ranks AND they managed to force him to take Beamer's kid as a staffer. Fuentes might want a new agent

Durkin is a complete unknown at this point.
Rutgers and South Carolina are looking like the clear losers at this point. Spurrier's midseason departure still has not made it easy for SoCar to find a coach.

Would seem to be a tough (impossible?) place to recruit non-LDS athletes to. Though they have attracted an enviable array of QBs through the years.

Obviously Durkin is an unknown as a head coach, but I put him third on the list because Maryland is a nobody as a football school, and they got a young, proven DC from Michigan and Florida. It was probably the biggest splash that a nobody school like Maryland could make.

1. Harbaugh
2. Harbuagh
3. Mark Ric-HARBAUGH!

Fun to speculate - but like drafts, how things look in 3 years is what matters. Ahem, we unfortunately have seen that the initial period or 1st season is not really a great predictor.
December 5th, 2015 at 1:05 AM ^
That's true only for non-Harbaugh hires.

Mark Richt at Miami seems like a great move for the Hurricanes really - I would think he'll have the program doing some nice things in very short order, and if the staff he assembles is as good at recruiting as he is, that can only help.
Mendenhall going to Virginia was actually a bit of a shocker to me, but he now gets access to some great recruiting grounds and I think he has the acumen to take Virginia to places that London simply could not.

Miami hasn't played in a big game since 2002 so choking would be an improvement

Richt seems to be a great hire.
I think Georgia will come to regret getting rid of him. Sometimes you need to appreciate what you have.
December 4th, 2015 at 10:52 PM ^
but for next year I think it will be Richt at Miami. They are never going to return to their "militant" gangsta era of dominance and probation and he is the perfect candidate to instill the values important to life after fb in that talent rich city. Hell, if he recruits that city alone, his football knowledge will take them to 9 - 10 victories a season w/in a short time. Damn good hire.

The Giants or Eagles with Brian Kelly.

Being serious here, do you really want Taysom Hill to come to Michigan?
December 4th, 2015 at 11:37 PM ^
December 4th, 2015 at 11:39 PM ^
Yes. Expected utility.
Very high upside (uninjured Heisman campaign season) with very low downside (some bitching among QB's [Harbaugh's bread and butter and claim to fame] and wasting one scholarship for the 2016 season).

I'd like Hill . . . as a walk-on.
If he wants some grooming from Jim Harbaugh, the QB whisperer, let him pay for it just like most people who come to Michigan do.
