This is tremendous news. I started getting an eerie feeling about this soon after the accident happened, just judging by the look on Jeff Gordon's face up in the booth. And the longer it went on without any good word (they said yesterday his life was not in danger, but I was still afraid if there was brain or spinal injuries), it just wasn't looking good.

Amazingly, a co-worker who is familiar with racing told me today that Newman had been very outspoken about the integrity of the car's roll cage, and that an extra "Newman's bar" had been added based on his recommendation. They are saying the change may have saved Newman's life.

God bless.

For him, his girls and his family.

The last Daytona fatality has saved many lives for sure.  RIP 3 always.

Plate racing will continue to have these crazy wrecks unless NASCAR allows teams XYZ ways of creating real separation during a race.

Was very lucky all that gas that spilled onto the track didn’t ignite, crazy crash...was wondering why the safety crew didn’t have younger more fit guys on hand, the safety crew looked old and slow to me

I will never again question the engineering of those cars. If that can be survived, I don't know what can't -- that crash looked like the killing of a villain in a movie -- it was that intense.

He hit the boards full speed. Got hit full speed driver side and went airborne. The car even caught fire and he  walks out of the hospital a few days later. Happy for him, his crew, his family. I’ll have someone to root for the next time he races.

This is frickin pretty cool. There was a weird feeling all around with this one. Definitely felt different.
