The only interesting note from today's presser

Submitted by Blueverine on

was his response to the question about Shane not taking the last couple of meaningless snaps. Harbaugh was specifically asked if it was to keep a red-shirt option open for Shane and he said "it is a consideration. We're all seeing it how it's taking place. We're in control of it."

Pretty revealing to me. Seems like it's a long shot that we wouldn't play a no. 2 QB this year, but an interesting comment to say the least.

In all reality, this is doing Shane a HUGE favor if he in fact gets that redshirt. He's not going to play this year except for meaningless snaps barring a Rudock injury; if he gets the redshirt, he still has two years to play college football. If he doesn't, he only has one.

Let's say Shane plans on transferring after this year; if he completes his degree, he can go ahead and leave with two years left of eligibility to play somewhere else; if he doesn't, he has a transfer year then can play somewhere else as a 5th year - NOT an option if he plays this year and doesn't acquire his degree.

If he sticks it out and competes for next year's spot (which I have little doubt that he will), he can compete next year and still have one year left to either play for Michigan or somewhere else as a grad transfer. If he wins the job at Michigan next season, that's two years of being a starter; if he loses the job, he has one year left with a grad year option to play immediately.

All that being said, if Shane wants his shot at playing as a starting college football quarterback, he really needs this redshirt. If he doesn't get it, coming back to Michigan next year may be a much tougher decision for him knowing that may be his last chance at playing football. I know he is a seriously strong competitor with a LOT of self confidence (which is fantastic), but that is an extremely difficult decision to make when you have a guy like O'Korn battling for next year's spot in your final year of eligibility. Maybe he gives it the spring to see how things are looking and makes a final decision from there. Either way, I really hope for this redshirt year for Shane, not even really for Michigan (although it benefits them too for sure), but I'm sure Shane would love to have that 5th year option.

God they ask some stupid questions or ask the same question twice.  If Harbaugh says Jourdan Lewis has a concussion and he doesn't know when he'll be cleared maybe don't ask him if he expects him to play Saturday?  If he says that the walk ons were recognized in front of the team maybe don't ask if they taped a letter to an onside kick in practice?  He just said they were recognized in front of the team in a meeting.

O'Korn

Some of the radio personalities have made statements regarding O'Korn being the starter this year if he was able to play. This could be coach speak but wouldn't then make much sense burning a redshirt on Shane.

I would have a sad if Shane and Speight were both still taking up scholarships in 2016 and 2017. We have O'Korn for 2 years, Gentry will be a 2nd year player next year, and Peters will be here.

...this really depends on Shane and how far along he is with school. If he's on track to graduate in May, it makes TOO much sense. In fact, if I'm him...I almost ask to redshirt this year unless it's something where I have to play multiple games as the starter.

If he graduates in May AND if he redshirts...he'd have not one, but TWO years to play as a grad transfer AND he wouldn't have to sit a year.

It's the reason all these incoming QBs are enrolling early and redshirting. Makes too much sense. you come in early and get ahead in school and graduate a semester early and you've got 2 years to play if it doesn't pan out for you on the field.

So if Morris is going to graduate...redshirt, go through an entire spring practice at Michigan and by June you'll know if you're going to start in the fall and play 2 years at Michigan. Or you can go transfer and play 2 years right away somewhere else. Maybe go to San Jose St. and hook up with Borges for 2 years? /onlyhalfkidding

I would assume in Coach's remarks that he and the rest of his staff (that he mentions in the answer to the question) have already weighed the Pros and Cons of red-shirting Shane or not.

All of the possible objections are based on not getting "game experience" this year but what kind of experience is it to hand the ball off a few times or take a knee...

And ...what about Rudock?!  He sure seems to benefit from "game experience" too.  Why start pulling him out of games to give Shane experience and have that come back to bite the team?

To me, having "the starter" known resolves uncertainty.  Harbaugh and staff must feel Shane is close to list him as OR starter last week in Utah.  I would presume they also know that to have a healthy and well-coached Shane Morris for TWO seasons is better than having a healthy and well-coached Shane Morris for one.

as a starter for two games.

Of course it would help him to have success in games, but I think he should have the big stage jitters out already.  He knows what it's like, he just needs to know how to make good decisions on the field, and I don't know how much of that you gain in low pressure garbage time

i just don't see morris ever being the full time starter. There's gonna be even more competition at the postition than this year. Between O'Korn, Gentry, Peters, Verimontes, Speight, and Malzone it doesn't see likely that Morris wins it..
