Odds for Team with Most Game Day Appearances in 2019

Submitted by M Ascending on July 1st, 2019 at 7:35 AM

Here's another useless, but at least semi-interesting tidbit to tide us over until FB season  starts.

https://247sports.com/college/michigan-state/LongFormArticle/Odds-for-team-with-most-College-GameDay-appearances-in-2019-133295105#1224981_1

This 247sports article sets odds for the teams most likely to lead the nation in GameDay appearances in 2019.  Guess who's Number 1 at 4:1 odds.

Hint:  they play OSU and ND at home, with road games at Wisc. and PSU.  Throw in MSU for the hell of it, and the odds make sense.

Just think of how good this season could have been if all of the eligible playmakers from last year had actually stayed to be senior leaders this year.

To each their own, but still...

Edit:  it's a bit sad that so many on this board need to express their ANGAR at the simple observation that, if the early draft players had returned for this season, the team likely would be even better.  They had every right to go - it happens - but the also had a chance to stay and help the team play their most interesting schedule in years and possibly win the conference and maybe even a national title (all while still being able to go on and make their millions afterwards).  But, this is the "new normal" of football and all that matters is getting paid, right?  Except, looking at the stories of the great wolverines of the past (keep up the "There are" posts btw!), I have a feeling that many (most?) of them wouldn't have given up any of those years in exchange for a larger/earlier payday.

But that's just my opinion.  By all means, neg away!

You're, I assume, a middle aged guy with a college degree who watches sports for fun on the weekend. What the do you know about these kids' mental calculus?

Option 1: stay another year and risk career ending injury so that some random dumb fuck on MGOBLOG can possibly live vicariously through the team's win over OSU?

Option 2: go to the NFL while I'm still healthy and possibly pull my entire family out of poverty?

You're selfish and you should probably feel bad. I say that as someone who trashed Higdon for skipping the bowl game as a team captain. He didn't owe anyone that game, but he should never have accepted that position.

That's right - I guess I forgot, what with my old age and all (I did graduate way back in the mid 20-aughts, long before whipper snappers such as yourself were running things), that this is a completely different world now and today's 18-22 year olds lead such different live than those in the 2000s, 90s, 80s, 70s, 60s and what not.  And also that the kids these days don't care about beating rivals and bragging rights - only us old timers think of those things.

No, poor kids don't care about bragging rights when they can make more than both their parent's life earnings by signing a contract to play pro ball.

Dorks like you seem to be obsessed with that shit though. I don't care what Bo would say about it, because it's not 1970 anymore.

Saying 18-22 year olds don't care about bragging rights (regardless of economic background)?   Seems to conflict with just about everything else associated with the sport and that age group.

You should remind them all to thank you for telling us exactly what they are thinking, too.  Clearly you are an underappreciated spokesperson.

Funny enough, I'm sure many of the kids that played in the 70s, 80s, 90s and 2000s were also poor and needed the income to help their families - yet they stayed the course and played all they could.  I haven't heard of any of them complaining.

Did I not clearly state "to each their own" several times now?  Of course every person is going to choose their own actions - at the moment we still live in a free society.

My argument (to which you are responding) is that playing out the remainder of a college career versus going pro is not an either/or decision - people can do both (and have for a long time).  Yet there seems to be a line of thought on this board that a player should go as soon as they are draftable - and God forbid anyone bring up any talking points in opposition to that.

And all of this was simply an aside from my initial comment, which was essentially: gee, think of how awesome the team would be this year if the experienced top-end players were still here (who could have stayed).

None of this is an attack against the guys who left early, yet people seem to think it is.

We'll get three: Wisconsin or PSU and then, assuming we don't completely shit the bed in the interim, in Ann Arbor to end the season.

And then the BiG championship game.

This means in part that we play one of the harder schedules in college football, so probably not the best news.

Could see Gameday showing up when ND comes to town, @PSU, and OSU.  @Wisconsin seems unlikely, same with MSU.

9/21 likely Athens for ND-UGA instead of Madison

10/19 UM-PSU is probably the biggest game that weekend.  Maybe Tenn at Alabama

10/26 ND at UM.  Also Auburn at LSU and Wisconsin at OSU

11/16 MSU at UM.  Also Wisconsin at NEB and UGA at Auburn

11/30 The Game.  Also tons of big games everywhere.

My conclusion:  I’m not sure.

Interestingly, maybe just for me, I already have 4 flights/trips booked for games this fall and 3 of those are likely game day games. Home vs ND and OSU then also LSU @ Texas. I generally avoid the game day set masses these days so their presence doesn't really do anything for me I guess.

Proof that you can bet on virtually anything these days!

I'd give 100:1 odds against U-M @ Wisconsin.  It's a FOX game at Noon.  ND is at Georgia that same day.  Wisconsin, honestly, wasn't that great last year and I'm dubious on them in 2019 too - they might go and lose to South Florida in their opener.

I'd say Notre Dame @ U-M is likely.  Time isn't decided, but we do know it will be on either ABC or ESPN.  Two blue-bloods.

I am doubtful on U-M @ PSU.  If GameDay picks the game above, that means U-M on GameDay 2 straight weeks.  That isn't unprecedented (PSU themselves did this in 2017), but it is fairly rare.

OSU @ U-M is always a marquee game - but that weekend is always stacked, of course.  IMO neither team is a "slam-dunk" to be a Top 10 team in 2019.  One of the teams could come in with 3+ losses and that would put a damper on things.

Honestly, if I was forced to guess a number of U-M GameDay regular-season games - I'd say 1.

There's no way that Game Day would come for UM/OSU if one of the two has a couple losses. On the other hand, if both teams are doing well, I think it's probably a pretty sure bet.

The whole "Meyer is gone, can Harbaugh finally beat OSU" or "Can Day continue Meyer's dominance over UM" story will be too juicy for them not to milk in person.

As long as they don’t trip up once or twice early in the season, they’ll host Gameday at least once between the ND, MSU and OSU games. My guess is it’ll be ND because with rivalry weekend being so loaded as is, it’s less likely that The Game gets the nod.

And even if they have Michigan hosting gamedays now, they’ve recently ended up getting some guest pickers that have zero ties to the university or even the state. Last year they brought in the Chainsmokers for Wisconsin, and I think before that they got Spurrier for the ‘15 MSU game. I get that you can’t always expect Charles Woodson or Tom Brady to show up, but you should still be able to bring in some prominent alum who would be a fun guest picker.

Imagine the great James Earl Jones coming on to be a guest picker.
