Matt EM has been in the loop with Burnett's recruitment and he threw up a $ in the post yesterday.  Not that hard to figure out what happened.  It's the way the game works, but since he's from Chicago that's part of the expectation, it seems.  Oh well we'll be ok.

You know what seems more reasonable than your thoughts on this? Listening to an actual insider who follows recruiting daily and would know much more about it. I know it’s crazy that the more reasonable take isn’t some random poster on the internet and an actual recruiting specialist, but surprise, it is.

One of the tough things about basketball recruiting for Michigan is some of the things that sell football recruits, or even three star basketball recruits, don’t matter to five stars.  It seems that they look for the best opportunity to showcase their basketball skills in the one year they plan to play in college.  Available majors, lifetime contacts, academic support, reputation as an educational institution, quality of faculty, those are important if you plan on a degree.  If you are one and done, it is more “who will give me the best opportunity to shine right away and enhance my draft status.”  Not an irrational approach.  I know, “Duke.”  But it is sui generis with the sainted Coach K.

Seems like we had no chance for this.  Kind of interesting how fickle basketball recruiting is.  I bet there is a very high chance he does not go to TT if they don't make the Championship.  It does seem odd to base your school off of the previous year alone.

Living in Kentucky I have thought about this a lot.  I am not convinced that one and done is the way to go especially if it is not generating consistent Final Four appearences.  There is a substantial amount of grumbling when UK gets eliminated before reaching final four.  By the time fans get acclimated to players over half the team is gone and you start over with freshman again.  Not denying there is huge excitement in the beginning but I like being able to track a Simpson,, Teske, or Livers over the course of a college career.  Also the UK basketball "living quarters" Is awesome.  I hear the talk of having a dorm experience but I don't know any player that wouldn't choose what UK offers over normal form life.

As Tom used to say, 'recruiting is a numbers game.'  If a couple of the sophomores develop and hopefully, Livers returns we will be fine next year with the returning core, Todd, Zeb, maybe Dickinson, and whoever else commits.

I think the optimal model would be Beilein's eye for talent, and skill at developing players, but with maybe one five-star a year sprinkled in.  Perhaps focus on 4 stars that might stay 2-5 years (the Villanova model?) except, of course, always be willing to make exception for the elite talent, who would likely be one and done.

It stinks to lose a Chicago kid who wants to go to Lubbock over playing for Juwan.  It is what it is.  I think Juwan will get his guys.

At this point, you must look at the overall recruiting picture. If my math is correct, UM only has 11 recruited scholarship players. That's already 2 short of what they could have. Simpson and Teske are definitely gone. They bring in Jackson and Todd to replace them and you're still 2 short. If Livers plays himself into the draft, you're 3 short and there's a great chance that Davis graduates and walks. That's possibly 4 short (without any other attrition) going into next year. At some point, some of those spots have to be filled, whether it be with 3/4/5 stars. You can come in 2nd or 3rd place for only so long before you have to focus on getting who you can get. That's one of the dangers of pursuing those 5 stars; how many times will you be left holding the bag while letting other viable options walk to other schools?
