Night games, why we don't have them..

Submitted by RRerabeginsin2009 on
I try to explain why Michigan doesn't have night games but, this guy 'promote richrod' thinks he knows everything. Well Bud, Facts are better than fiction. " Martin went on to talk about how the athletic department doesn’t want to play night games, and about the greater responsibility that a night game puts on him and his cohorts. A concern for Martin was public safety following a night game — making sure that parking lots were well lit, police were in place, etc. " Now we know why we don't have them. Dude, was this worth a new post? And that isn't the only reason as everyone tried to tell you in the last post. Think about it. The city has street lights and adding lights is not really that expensive if there needed to be more. A more accurate reason that "public safety" might be a concern is that a night game entails an entire DAY of pregaming, which would lead to sloshed students everywhere. Also dude, if you are going to quote something, source it. I can say random shit in quotes too. And BTW, you have very quickly put yourself into the unenviable role of most hated poster. Stop rubbing people the wrong way. And keep in mind man, your opinion is only an opinion, not a fact.

Your acting like I'm the one who makes the rules. I WAS QUOTING WHY THEY DIDN'T HAVE NIGHT GAMES. Enough said. Yes its not espensive, but that is why they don't have night games. What dont you understand? And the article for my post is a article saying why dont we, its not hard, bla bla. Ill say it for the last time, I WOULD LOVE TO HAVE NIGHT GAMES.

Whatever the reasons, they're not good enough. Plenty of other programs regularly hold night games, and they apparently manage to have the police "in place." If the Athletic Department can shell out millions of dollars for stadium renovations, it could easily spare some for added security and frickin light fixtures around the stadium. Frankly, other programs' continued ability to host night games completely undermines these alleged concerns, unless concrete evidence shows that night games demonstrably affect safety. And while some increase in overall drunkenness is to be expected, I doubt it would legitimately jeopardize "safety."

Especially as opposed to Penn State. 1. It is located at a high-traffic major intersection without good sidewalks on all sides. 2. It is located in the middle of a large residential neighborhood. Night games exacerbate all the existing problems with these even without adding the likelihood of increased drunkeness. You are in denial if you do not think darkness would not complicate the problems with idiots running across either Main or Stadium at random, drivers rear-ending each other because they are unprepared to stop for pedestrians, or if rerouting Main St. would not be more confusing in the real dark of the night. People who live in Burns Park got the Marching Band practice times moved because the early drumming disturbed their mornings. Don't think they wouldn't complain about an actual game. Neighbors on Granger complained to the University about soccer games that ran into overtime being loud after 9 p.m. People are complaining about the work on the stadium being loud. Don't think they wouldn't have a lot to say about football. Plus, it's not part of Michigan Tradition.

No, I've never been to Michigan Stadium. I actually posted that comment just for giggles. What do you think? Most of the buildings closest to the stadium are commercial. Yeah, there are some apartments on Hoover, but they're filled with students. If you define "neighborhood" as some giant half-mile radius, then okay, it's in a "residential neighborhood." But that's true for many, many on-campus football stadiums. Anyway, when we're talking about possibly hosting a single night game a year - one Saturday night out of 52 - it's a non-issue.

If I had to wait until the sun went down to watch the Big Blue take the field. 3:30 games drive me nuts, because I cant find enough stuff to do to kill the time, besides drink MORE, all I think about from 6 a.m. to kickoff is will we or won't we play well today. And will we win or lose of course. If I had to wait till 7 or 8 o'clock, I might be... A) Be Passed out drunk by kickoff!!!!!!! or B) Start using drugs to calm down my excitment for kickoff. The only light these Michigan Men should play under is SUNLIGHT. Period.

Lets blame it on the same fans that we blame for being too quiet and sitting down all the time. Night games would go past their bedtime.

That should be the voice of authority. He talks about how 100,000 people drive hours and hours for the game and then drive home afterward. A night game would be a logistical nightmare and a drunk-driving fest even more than game days already are. There are not enough hotel rooms in Ann Arbor to handle a night game, let alone enough police. This is a stupid thread.

I don't think that should factor into any argument for or against the advent of night games. I've been to a ton of 3:30 kickoffs, and every time the game ends is like 630-7 and its pitch dark out anyways. I think the fact that U of M and the big house are actual in a decent sized city, with lots of residential area in very close proximity, and the disturbance it could potentially cause would be a reason against night games in addition with the whole tradition thing. I think it also ties into a discussion I mentioned about the noise factor in the Big House is that the older/family oriented atmosphere conflicts with the idea of a night game. I personally would love to see a night game, I think it would be a really hyped up atmosphere and would be a great time.

I have allowed some of the arguments I have read here to change my mind for me. I was against night games because of the cold weather, especially now that RR is recruiting southern players. However, I think that a few night games early in the season, before it gets too cold, would be great now, because I like the idea of fans being louder. If it takes them being drunk to be as loud as fans in many other venues, then great; party on. If fans got really loud in night games, maybe it would carry over to the day games. You never know.

The Big House has been around for a long time. People knew what they were getting into when they bought houses so close to the stadium. And if they really don't like people pissing in their yards, an electric fence will take care of it just fine.

When it's faculty complaining about the noise and the traffic in Burns Park. Yes, perhaps it is student slums on Main and light industrial on Industrial, but if you draw a circle with a half-mile radius, in any direction you'll get some big ticket real estate with some lawyered-up owners who do not want night games. It's not going to happen anytime soon because the cost to the University is too high. The brouhaha about soccer -- SOCCER, which draws 500 on a good day -- noise last year got people researching what the laws were on this, what the University's responsibilities were, etc. They are already pissed about stadium work throughout the weekend.

I remember several games ('02/'05 PSU, '04 MSU) just to name a few, going late and having the lights come on. Wouldn't all the safety/darkness issues be a concern then, too? We seem to have survived those games well enough.

I was there for all of those games, but only one was a night one, right? The others were 3:30 Starts that lasted a long time. BTW they were all great games (PSU 2002 - win in OT, PSU 2005 - Manningham's last second TD from Henne, MSU - Braylon's game).
