For slavery abolition and school integration. I also believe that the success and spin the southern schools receive is based on a concerted effort by the government to subsidize costs for southern institutions of “higher learning” that are never on the verge of anything groundbreaking, unless its to build a new sports complex...Neg Away

But this is incredibly heavy handed.  A female student gives "impermissible benefits" to some players independent of the athletic department, they self report it after finding out, and then the entire program gets punished?  What message is the NCAA trying to send here?

The message is also that if an athletic department discovers their players were up to something shady after the fact, they shouldn't report it, because penalties will come down that affec the entire program. That's how you encourage coverups and shady programs. That's how you lead to situations like Baylor and Michigan State- you create a culture where people are afraid of dirt coming out and close ranks instead of doing the right thing.

They too have been forced to vacate wins, of course, and therein lies the problem.  Do we want to equate Notre Dame's situation with Baylor's?  Do we want to send the message that if you do everything right, adhere to your school's honor code, and report violations, that you receive the same punishment as an institution that systematically covered up a decade of sexual assault?

If the punishments are going to be the same, schools might as well try to cover it up.  That's a dangerous path.

Maybe I’m in the minority here, but I’ve always felt like vacating wins has been such a hollow punishment. People went to those games. They saw them happen, and they saw ND win. You can’t just erase that history.

I guess I just never understood the point.

This times 1000%. This doesn't change the outcome of the games that were played, that team went 12-0, regardless of what was happening off the field. I've never understood the whole concept of vacating wins either. It's like that small minority of Michigan fans who think we should get to hang a banner because Louisville vacated their wins and National Championship. That banner wasn't earned, regardless of the other stuff, Michigan didn't win that game.
