ND Likely to Schedule Michigan Sooner than Planned

Per Sports Business Journal's John Ourand, the recent Big Ten TV deal with NBC likely means Notre Dame will stay independent. Ourand also notes that ND is likely to resume its rivalry with Michigan sooner than currently scheduled (link to article):

What the Big Ten deal means for Notre Dame

Notre Dame gets around $25 million per year from its current NBC deal, which runs through 2025. Sources say the school should expect around $60 million per year from a new contract -- though it’s hard to predict how the media business will look three years from now.

There had been speculation that Notre Dame could command a rights fee upward of $75 million per year when it renegotiates its new contract. That’s because it fills its schedule with games -- like its long-standing rivalry with Navy -- that traditionally bring in lower ratings.

Obviously, Notre Dame would remain independent if it agrees to a new rights deal. But its association with NBC -- and NBC’s new association with the Big Ten -- make it likely that the Fighting Irish would add more Big Ten games to its schedule.

In other words, expect a return of Notre Dame’s rivalry with Michigan before 2033, which is when they are next scheduled to meet. The two last played in 2019. This season, Notre Dame has one Big Ten school (Ohio State) and one soon-to-be Big Ten school (USC) on its schedule.

Conference teams should boycott them until they join one. To Hell With Notre Dame.

I just really don't get why everyone isn't on this same page. Enough accommodating for their Disney-fied bullshit.

Bogey, and - when USC joins the B1G, let ND know they’ll no longer face the Trojans.  ND takes great pride in that rivalry.

IIRC, the ND AD slipped a letter to Brandon, when he was AD, just prior to kickoff of one game - informing him that ND was providing notice to cancel future games in the series.

It would be great if Warren gave Swarbrick a letter prior to the kickoff of the season opener in Columbus stating- the B1G and it’s member schools will no longer schedule a regular season football game against them.

Fuck Notre Dame. If they can’t join our conference and play a real schedule, the entire conference should not play them. Let’s see your TV ratings playing Duke and Wake Forest every week.

I just looked at ND’s future football schedules - and, besides incoming “new” member to the B1G, USC - there are several B1G teams on the schedule.  The B1G teams ND is currently scheduled to play - over the next decade, or so, include - Ohio State (return from this season’s opener - to be played in South Bend), Wisconsin at Lambeau, Purdue, MSU, Indiana, and Michigan.

There are appears to be a home & home with Alabama on the books for 2029 and 2030.

NBC is likely pushing for ND big ten matchups should they sign a rights deal with both ND and The BigTen.  That would help them drive up the value of their deal with ND.  ND wants 60 Million from NBC with no full deal as the rest of their conference belongs to the ACC.

What is in it for The Big Ten?  I don't see a bonus here?  ND wants to remain and independent and a massive tv deal.  But that does nothing for the Big Ten?  What gain is it to the conference to play ND?  Media ratings, already have them.  A potential loss from a school that refuses to join?  Why risk it with ND and reward them.  Even beating them, where is the reward for playing them?

Consider by this time we could be playing USC and Wisconsin Cross division and meet them again in the BigTen title game.  What benefit is it adding another power program to the schedule?  I just do not see the value in adding ND.

As a fan, yes, I want big games.  But there will be zero incentive for ND to join the big10 if we pump up their revenue with big games.  As in who gets the credit for the revenue being on NBC....
