My Cool Story Bro - Dinner with Jarrod Bunch and 'Rocket' Ismail

Submitted by Mturner on

Wanted to get this in before the end of the OT season. It's my first in a long long time so be gentle. Sorry for the length, and any typos. I had to write this in a hurry during my lunch at work.

A few weeks ago I was lucky enough to attend a private dinner with guest speakers Jarrod Bunch and Raghib “Rocket” Ismail.

For any of the unfamiliar, Jarrod Bunch played fullback for Michigan from 1987-90 and captained the 1990 team. He was drafted 27th overall  in the first round to the New York Giants where he had  3 year career due to knee injuries.  Bunch is now an actor making appearances in Django Unchained, and Entourage among many others.

Rocket Ismail was a star WR for Notre Dame from 88-91 where he finished runner up in the Heisman voting in 1990 losing to Ty Detmer. Ismail was projected as the top overall pick in the 1991 NFL draft, but decided to forgo the draft and sign with the Toronto Argonauts. He eventually moved back to the NFL playing for the LA(!) Raiders, Panthers, and Cowboys before retiring in 2001.

The dinner was very Michigan – Notre Dame centric obviously (a lot of chanting going on back and forth).  The party I wanted to share with you guys however, came when Teddy Greenstein (B1G reporter for the Chicago Tribune)  got to interview both Jarrod and Rocket. It was very entertaining to get insight into the rivalry between Bo and Lou Holtz.

The first topic they covered was the 1989 game (which sadly I was too young to see) between #1 ND and #2 Michigan. ND escaped with a win in the Big House by a score of 24-19 thanks to Rocket’s two kickoff returns for touchdowns. Jarrod was the first to speak about the game and just put his head down and smiled. He said that before the game Bo sat the team down and said “We are going to go out there and we are going to give them exactly what they want, and still stick it in their face be WE ARE MICHIGAN. We are going to kick it straight to this Rocket Ismail, and then we are going to run down the field and tackle him harder then he has ever been tackled because this is Michigan. This is our field. We aren’t afraid of them, or any player that they have. Nobody can come in here and be a star against us.” Jarrod then smiled and looked at the crowd and said “I think you know what happened after the first kickoff.” Bo then told the team to kick off to him again because there is no way somebody can do that to Michigan again. Jarrod then laughed and looked at Ismail and said “He did it again”. He then explained the reason that he isn’t mad about telling this story, is because it showed how much love and confidence Bo had for Michigan. He truly thought that every team he had was the best team he had ever coached, and had the best players in the nation.  He then went on to say that his most memorable game in college was the 1990 loss to USC, as before the game Bo announced his retirement. He said it was the first and only time he will ever see Bo on the brink of tears. He said that game sticks with him still today because at the end of the game it started to get out of hand, and Jarrod and the offense were sitting on the sidelines watching the game and feeling worse ‘than he ever has in his life because they felt like they wanted to do something and would give anything to do something but couldn’t. They all loved Bo so much, and Bo loved them, and it killed them to not be able to send him out with a win.

I wont get into Rocket’s side of the story as this is already way to long of a post, but I will share some brief notes and comments that stuck out to me.

·      When Jarrod was asked about Dave Brandon, he simply responded “WHO???”

·      Jarrod thinks the reason Michigan has been down is the mis-interpretation of the ‘Michigan Man’.

o   He said a Michigan Man is “a person who wants to win, but not by any means necessary. A person that wants to win on the field and in life. A develop men to have the same mentality.

o   He said Harbaugh is a Michigan Man.  He hold all of Bo’s principals but to a more modern standpoint. His father was a Bo coach and raised him under the same principals, which Bo then instilled in him during his time at Michigan.

·      Bo was a Michigan man to the max. Bo never let past players come back to practice, because he only concentrated on current team. Only concentrated on the players that he was molding into Michigan men, not the ones that already were.

·      Rocket mentioned that Holtz always said that Notre Dame wins the Big 10 every year.

·      Jarrod and Rocket both think players should be compensated, but they didn’t when they played. But now with the longer practices

·      and season they think they should. They said it used to be a sport but now it is a full-time job in college.

o   Now coaches get paid more.

o   Huge apparel contracts.

§  Not fair to players.

·      Rocket said that ND is a CFB Playoff team this year, and if the QB play is good can win it all.

·      Jarrod said that Harbaugh will bring this team to the top, but we have to be patient, as it won’t happen overnight but this team will be TOUGH.

·      Rocket liked playing Miami the most because his freshmen year their was full team brawl between the teams that almost led to Holtz cancelling the game.

This was a great post, with some great stories. Thanks for sharing.

And for the record:  THIS IS NOT OFF TOPIC!!!! You aren't writing about interior decorating, or fishing, or stupid uniforms, or cars, or dogs, or what you're drinking, You're writing about a personal experience with a former Michigan football player, who shared stories about one of Michigan's most storied coaches. And beyond that, you're sharing something unique, that hasn't been shared before.

Even some of the clearly current "on topic" forum posts are repetitive, and often can be found posted a day or two earlier. I hope you will ALWAYS post something like this, and that others won't overstress about whether or not something is Off Topic.

EDIT:  I painfully remember watching that game. Yes, it was awesome and great that Bo believed in his team, and didn't back down from anyone, but you have to avoid kicking to someone like Rocket.

will never be off topic. I don't know how you pronounce his name, but my brother and I would always call him, "jah-RODDDD BUNCH!" Easily one of my favorite players of all time, but I'm partial to fullbacks.

likely thanks to one of you... A few years ago my MGoFiance and I were traveling through Ann Arbor. She had never been, so we stopped at Mr. Spots for some wings...she loves wings. It happened to be the day of that huge football alum gathering put on by Hoke that spring. We squeezed into Spots and sat next to this monster dude who was pounding wings. There was an open seat right across from him, which was right next to me. We start eating, and a minute later Charles MF Woodson comes and sits right there...starts talking to the dude about the event they were just at, and starts talking about how he'd been craving Mr. Spots for a while. A minute later some obese dweeby 50 year old guy ambushes him, and in his dweeby nasaly voice says "Mr. Woodson, you are my hero oh my god. I was in the south end zone when you returned that punt against Ohio State. What an honor to meet you! Can you please get a picture with me and my friend?" Woodson looks at his dining companion and says "Sorry bro, I gotta go. Text me. Love you dawg". The dude says "Love you too bro." CW leaves and gets into a waiting car. PS thanks to some crack internet research I'm fairly certain his dining companion was Rob Renes. If any of you reading this is that obese dweeby guy, I hate you forever.

It was always a fantasy of mine that Steve Breaston would return a couple of kickoffs for TD's in Notre Dame Stadium so they would know what it felt like. But in the end, I was happier with the demolition job Mario Manningham did on their secondary in the 47-21 blowout right under Touchdown Jesus. Although we had that closeup of that toolbag Irish fan giving Breaston the finger in the endzone after he missed a TD catch.

Cool Story.  I met Rocket about 5 years ago at an event where he was representing a dental mouthguard for sports...and we talked about that 89 game too.  He mentioned that he was friends with alot of former Michigan players, including Bunch and Corwin Brown.

Trust me, not a damn soul would've complained if you decided to make this essay length. Great read.

A fullback going in the first round....it's amazing how much the game has changed.

My cool story bro

Is that Jarrod Bunch was my next door neighbor at freshman orientation. And he was as nice and cool as he was ripped to the bejeezus

My uncool story bro is I was at that M/ND game and it poured with rain and sucked balls and made me hate life and question the meaning of existence

is as important to Michigan football as any other coach Michigan has ever had. He did so many things right, and I wouldn't trade him for anyone, but...
“We are going to go out there and we are going to give them exactly what they want, and still stick it in their face be WE ARE MICHIGAN. We are going to kick it straight to this Rocket Ismail, and then we are going to run down the field and tackle him harder then he has ever been tackled because this is Michigan.
This is the exact same attitude that resulted in his terrible bowl record. The attitude of "first establish the run in order to pass" that makes absolutely no sense (why pass if you have established the run? - and when Bo did establish the run, he didn't pass). His strategy for most of his coaching career was just direct - try to run the ball down the other team's throat. The announcers knew it, the opposing team knew it, every single person in the stadium knew it. And when he came up against a good team (like in the Rose Bowl, Orange Bowl or Sugar Bowl), his offenses always failed. Bo was a great coach that won with fundamentals and by doing things honestly. But he never out-strategized or out-thought an opposing coach in a bowl game (he did on a couple of rare occasions in the regular season).

5-4-1 VS Woody freaking Hayes.  Ask Tom Osborne about the second half of the 86 Fiesta Bowl. Ask coach James and Washington if Bo was any good.

Those 5 times BO made it past Woody they had to travel to Pasadena and play a Pac 10 team in their backyard.  Other then the Stanford fluke loss (Bo wins national championship IMO if Stanford does not get beyond lucky in that game) and the Charles White no fumble call he faced very good competiton.

I live in L.A. and run into Jarrod Bunch all of the time, generally at the gym.  He is a class act, incredibly modest and completely unpretentious.  His heart is true blue.  It's great to get him talking about Michigan Football, which he can get on a roll at times; but, almost impossible to get him to talk about himself.  Some stories leak out, but he is far too modest.  He's truly a great guy.
