Morning coffee/Olympics open thread

Drinking my French roast, watching some Frenchmen (among others) hit the road for the cycling race. What events are you looking forward to the most? Me, I'm a former swimmer, so I can't wait for the fencing...

I already have given up on NBC's coverage for the most part. The CBC did a phenomenal  job with the opening ceremonies in comparison last night, I thought, so I think I might just stick with them quite honestly. I had a bad feeling as early as Thursday during the preview special when even that went to commercial about every 90 seconds, it seemed.

I'm going to look for CBC. I'm not sur its on my cable in So Cal. We DVR'd the opening ceremony because I couldn't get through the first 30 minutes of blathering by the commentators. WTF was Tom Brokow doing on a horse? The commercials were overwhelming and I'm not sure if the show was as bad as it seems. It probably was, but NBC commentating was abysmal. No explanation to make the show interesting. No background...it's like they just showed up and have zero knowledge of stuff to make that show interesting. So... Thanks for the CBC tip.

I'll check to see if I can stream live with CBC and/or BBC.

I already expended my free 1/2 hour of live streaming on NBC's website watching 1st session of men's gymnastics prelims, so will have to wait until primetime to watch NBC-edited Mikulak & Co.  (For those who aren't antenna-lovin' Luddites, you can stream their session live at 1:30 pm.)

Terribly sad to learn that John Orozco, former Olympian from the Bronx, who was moved to tears when he made the US team after being away from the sport with serious injuries, tore his ACL in training a week or so ago and is off the team.

Can someone explain this phenomenon? What is it about the Olympics that creates this commonly accepted practice of boning randoms in the Village? Is it just that most of them are young and fit, so why not shag several other similarly young and fit individuals? I'm not against it by any means, but I've never quite understood. I feel like this should be a documentary...

Put a ton of young, fit, attractice people in a dorm together and they will naturally get it on.  Couple that with the fact that these people spend nearly all their time training and suddenly have a ton of free time once their event is over and they will probably never see these people again and you have the perfect recipe for lost of no strings attached hookups.

fresh ground in my grinder.  Not watching Olympics quite yet; instead just finished listening (on youtube) to  Frank Sinatra's recording of  'The Girl From Ipanema'.  Had earlier read on my news feed that one of the Olympic Opening Ceremony highlights involved that song.

Beautiful song, one of my favorite Sinatra recordings:

Just happen to be drinking coffee and surfing whilest the kid plays.  I totally forgot about the opening ceremonies last night, but probably won't watch much of the Olympics, anyway.  I've never been a fan of the Summer Games.  Maybe swimming, but otherwise...  It might make it on as background, but the kid usually trumps anything the wife or I would want on.

I much prefer the Winter Games, I'll make time to watch those...

I love the Olympics especially distance running events. However, I am extremely disillusioned with the IOC. The amount of corruption is sickening. Watching the parade of nations was like watching the opening parade of the Hunger Games.

The NCAA, while a terrible organization, is not on the same order of magnitude as FIFA and the IOC. You're literally talking about organizations that bring in slave migrant workers (they're not compensated so I don't know what else you'd call them) who are dying by the hundreds trying to build billion dollar stadiums paid for by the people of countries struggling to provide basic necessities. This is all so the system of bribes to win bids (and *every* Olympic site and World Cup site is won via bribe these days) continues, allowing the few heads of the IOC and FIFA to continue their posh lifestyles.

The MGoDog woke me up way too early this morning after a late night of drinking. Espresso roast, eggs and bacon, and watching deer hunting programs in anticipation for the season. September 3 and 24 can't get here soon enough.

early morning spent rapidly hitting refresh and trying to make sure I didn't lose out on a pair of shoes. Quickly make a parfait, wait for the Jordan.com sale and then head to the gym. There are a few guys from my yacht club sailing in these Olympics as well as a friends cousin. So I will likely only watch the sailing events.

In all likelihood I won't watch 5 seconds of the Olympics. And I don't drink much coffee because I don't drink caffeine. But I do like mornings. Roll call for the Harrietta Blueberry Festival, who's coming? Oh, just me. Nvrmd.
