Mike Macdonald hire made official
January 17th, 2021 at 2:36 PM ^
Hoping his staff hires start to be announced very soon. Feels weird with so much in limbo at the moment.
January 17th, 2021 at 2:45 PM ^
Feels less weird being in limbo if he wanted to allow the DC some input and now he has the time to do that. I’d assume they come very quickly
January 17th, 2021 at 3:17 PM ^
I don’t think we’re disagreeing. I’m just saying it feels weird that we fired brown in December and it’s mid January and we still don’t know the fate of most of the defensive staff.
I was just saying I hope we start to get a finalized staff soon.
January 17th, 2021 at 4:10 PM ^
Well hopefully the lead singer from The Doobie Brothers will help improve our defense a lot by a lot as opposed to little by little.
January 17th, 2021 at 2:37 PM ^
I hope he coaches as good as he sings. Guy had some amazing hits.

‘This Is It’!! If this hire doesn’t work out we all should be ‘Takin It To the Streets’
January 17th, 2021 at 3:11 PM ^
So, we had a VP that was a big fan and named an initiative ‘Takin’ it to the Streets’, until we alerted him to the unfortunate acronym, TitS, that would surely follow. Ah, corporate life.
January 17th, 2021 at 3:37 PM ^
He didn't know it, but you were his brothers
January 17th, 2021 at 3:45 PM ^
Must be related to the person who developed the Super High Intensity Training program.
January 17th, 2021 at 3:52 PM ^
One other anecdote... when I was active duty AF, I was working on something nicknamed BATCAVE (no OPSEC violation here folks. Wasn't classified).
So some general got involved and wanted to know what BATCAVE meant -- nothing, it's a nickname.
He said that wouldn't be allowed, the name had to be meaningful (what ever that means).
So being the 5 year olds that we were, we re-arranged some letters from actual equipment used, and came up with a new name. The blissfully unaware one star didn't realize the acronym for it turned out to be BUTCRACK.
January 17th, 2021 at 2:44 PM ^
Nothing against him but if I hear Ya Mo Be There one more time, I’m gonna Ya Mo burn this place to the ground.
January 17th, 2021 at 2:45 PM ^
For the record, I think he’s better than Fran.
January 17th, 2021 at 2:47 PM ^
Also, if this man manages to put great defenses on the field I hope that “>Fran” signs show up in the Big House.
January 17th, 2021 at 2:48 PM ^
Smh. I assume you're referencing Michael McDonald?
January 17th, 2021 at 3:09 PM ^
I assume you have lots of “real” friends.
January 17th, 2021 at 4:24 PM ^
His duet with Patti Labelle is one of my favorites.
January 17th, 2021 at 2:40 PM ^
How pissed off am I supposed to be about this hire?
January 17th, 2021 at 2:46 PM ^
These days - very
January 17th, 2021 at 2:48 PM ^
Feel how you want to feel about it man it’s ok to have an opinion still. Looking for someone else’s idea how to feel on a message board is not the way to a happy self actualized existence.
but I like the hire and the direction.
January 17th, 2021 at 2:56 PM ^
He probably felt like he didn’t need the “/s”. Which he didn’t, except for you maybe.
January 17th, 2021 at 2:48 PM ^
Somewhere between not even a little bit & absolutely furious, final decision will be made every football Saturday next fall...

? Young MacDonald coached the D ?
January 17th, 2021 at 4:46 PM ^
? With a 5 star here and a 5 star there, here a star, there a star, everywhere a star-star, ...?
One can hope, at least.
January 17th, 2021 at 9:37 PM ^
...at Ohio St.
January 17th, 2021 at 2:43 PM ^
I honestly don't know how to feel about this.
January 17th, 2021 at 3:22 PM ^
I feel good - because it’s the off-season, and all changes are good changes
January 17th, 2021 at 3:52 PM ^
Exactly.
What we were doing wasn't working, so a change needed to be made. It was. So that's a positive.
Is it a good change? I don't know. But if it doesn't work, and quickly, then another change will be made--which would also make sense.
January 17th, 2021 at 4:46 PM ^
It's a change so I'm ecstatic. If we're still giving up 500yds & 50pts in big games on year three make another change, don't wait til 6 years again for christsakes.
January 17th, 2021 at 2:47 PM ^
Sure looks like he can coach. Hope he can recruit, or if not, that he can hire assistants who can.
January 17th, 2021 at 2:48 PM ^
Great. Here's hoping he brings coherent, fundamentally sound defense as a floor and uses his pockets of high end talent to edge the defense up as close to elite as possible.
January 17th, 2021 at 2:52 PM ^
I like it. Young coach with NFL experience.
January 17th, 2021 at 2:53 PM ^
Honestly I really like this. Did some research and it seems like the people in the Georgia forums really wanted him a few years ago. I like that it’s a younger guy and while he doesn’t have coordinator experience, John had to of recommended him to Jim.
I believe his from the New Jersey area so hopefully he can at least recruit that area(I know, that’s what everyone complains about with don brown) and can recruit Georgia
January 17th, 2021 at 3:03 PM ^
Hopefully he can seal the deal on 5* safety Keon Sabb who is from NJ.
January 17th, 2021 at 2:55 PM ^
Speaking of NFL stuff, reports are trickling up that Deshaun Watson is DONE at Houston. Which is astonishing.
But he’s a top 5-10 QB without question. And young.
Theres some talk that Stafford is done in Detroit.
...would a trade be doable? Would you be willing to trade a 1st and Stafford for Watson, a guy who could be elite for 10 years? If he wants to come, obviously no sure thing.
That’s a no-brainer trade for the Lions, to me. The question is whether Houston would take it.
January 17th, 2021 at 3:04 PM ^
Wow, the Texans are starting to rival the Bengals when it comes to disfunction. I would not be happy were I a Houston fan.
January 17th, 2021 at 3:31 PM ^
Agree, thought the shenanigans would have stopped post BoB. Guess not.
January 17th, 2021 at 3:06 PM ^
I dunno. A first round pick too? That seems a little steep. I’d gladly take Watson. He had talent around him in Houston and was still inconsistent. The potential is there but we need that 1st round pick to give him some pocket protection.
January 17th, 2021 at 3:20 PM ^
If anything, it’s a bit light. A franchise QB is worth a lot more than a 1st round pick.
January 17th, 2021 at 3:36 PM ^
Yeah, we would definitely need to give up Stafford and multiple firsts at a minimum to get Watson
January 17th, 2021 at 3:58 PM ^
1st rounder is worth it. Watson is a proven commodity. Draft picks panning out are always a risk. Especially for the kitties.
January 17th, 2021 at 4:23 PM ^
The Jets can offer #2, plus they have an extra 1st rounder this year and next. My guess is he goes to the Jets for the #2 plus at least 1 if not 2 of the other first rounders. Behind Mahomes, Watson is the most valuable QB in the game.
January 18th, 2021 at 12:04 AM ^
Seems reasonable. Say, both #1s this year and one of them next year? Most sensible option I've heard.
I mean, if he's willing to go to the Jets.
January 17th, 2021 at 8:28 PM ^
Inconsistent? Do you watch the nfl? He had 33 tds and 7 ints and a qb rating of 112 lol
January 17th, 2021 at 4:23 PM ^
Not happening. He has a no trade clause and wants to go to Miami.
January 17th, 2021 at 4:23 PM ^
The Lions only have 6 picks, and we suck, why would he be any happier in Detroit than he is in Houston? Trade Stafford, and get as many picks as you can. The Lions are in rebuilding mode. The probably only have 3 NFL starters on defense. We need picks, not a disgruntled QB.
January 17th, 2021 at 4:53 PM ^
Price is gonna be 2 first rounders s d probably a 2nd, 4th, and 5th over the next 2 years.
January 17th, 2021 at 4:55 PM ^
Spot on. No GM in their right mind is going to come in and start handing out 1st round (top 10) draft picks while having the absolutely worst defense in the league.
January 17th, 2021 at 10:23 PM ^
Texans would hang up. Maybe stafford, lions first this season and next, and probably another 2nd would keep them from hanging up
