Mick McCabe - et tu?

Submitted by dahblue on
I wish I could just ignore all the anti-Dorsey nonsense coming from the Freep, but Mick McCabe's piece was the last straw for me. Not only is he a bit tardy-to-the-party (if you're married, you might get that obscure but still funny reference) but he either purposefully ignored some facts or is just clueless. I don't want to urge anyone to read the Freep, but he basically said that despite his history with prep sports, he can't think of any other athlete with such a past as Dorsey. He then asks what UofM fans would have said if Dorsey went to MSU. So, I put on my big dork loser hat and wrote the following: __________________ Hi Mick- I don't believe I've ever written the author in response to his/her story before, but I feel compelled to chime in with my two cents. I understand you're a busy man and greatly appreciate your taking the time to read my thoughts. You ask what the reaction would be if Demar Dorsey committed to MSU, but then fail to acknowledge an amazing double standard. You write, "I cannot recall a high-profile prep athlete in this state who had so many known run-ins with the law." How could you not recall MSU star Roderick Jenrette? You couldn't make up a better comparison. He faced the same charges as Dorsey (even in the same state). The difference between the two is that Dorsey was only fifteen and hasn't had trouble since. Jenrette was charged while being recruited to MSU and then, for another burglary (a 15-year felony), while on scholarship at MSU. I don't believe that you and/or the Free Press were so horrified by that set of facts. When Dantonio lied about Jenrette's absence from East Lansing, saying that he was tending to personal matters, did you and/or the Free Press call him out? No. Was there a seven-page investigative report into the crimes and Dantonio's reaction to the same? No. What about after the potluck attacks? Barely a peep. You ask what UofM fans would think if Dorsey went to MSU...Mick, he did go to MSU. His name was just "Jenrette" instead of "Dorsey". What was the reaction of Michigan fans? Crickets. The reaction of this Michigan fan, today, is to take offense with the nonstop parade of Free Press articles hypocritically bashing Dorsey. Michigan has decided to give him another chance and assumes the risk in doing so. If he blows it; he'll rightfully be removed from the team. The opposite would be true in East Lansing where the coach would drive him from prison to practice without answering a single question on the subject. If the Jenrette coverage (or lack thereof) was fair; the same silence should have applied to Dorsey. If the Dorsey coverage is the norm; why silence for Jenrette? This isn't at all about second chances - which can fairly be debated. This is about journalistic integrity and fairness. Two similar subjects deserve to be treated in a similar manner. Of course, Dorsey didn't just participate in a mob attack at a potluck dinner...so maybe they aren't so similar after all. Thank you very much for taking the time to listen.

How about the MSU players that beat up a bunch of kids? Or Larry Harrison. Both of those were worse (in my opinion) and they should have been more mature based on age... How about Clarett? Or maybe Ellis T Jones? Wow, the list really could go on forever--and they all got to college. Mick's writing sucked when I played high school football too.

Now that the Freep has their High School guy on the story, I really would like to see behind the scenes there. Is there really any reason for a local high school reporter to be doing an article about Dorsey with a ridiculous emotional plea at the end? Are they trying to scare the parents of local UofM recruits into not allowing their children to play for RR>?

No, that is not supposed. The play is a fictional account, and the words in that play are "Et tu, Brute?" Moreover, even in the play those words are not his last; they are followed with "Then fall, Caesar!"

Let's not forget Spartan great Eric Knott, who PLEAD GUILTY, to 4th degree CSC, after being charged with rape, while being actively recruited by MSU, who even honored their scholarship offer. According to McCabe, this is not as bad as being ARRESTED for robbery, but being ACQUITTED. D-O-U-C-H-E! MSU knew about sex charge Spartans won't talk about Knott's status January 27, 2000 BY DAVID A. MARKIEWICZ, BILL L. ROOSE AND MICK McCABE FREE PRESS SPORTS WRITERS Michigan State football coaches were aware of sexual-assault charges against a star Detroit high school player last fall, but have continued to recruit him while he awaits trial. Former MSU coach Nick Saban said Wednesday that he and his successor, Bobby Williams, discussed the case involving Henry Ford tight end Eric Knott in the middle of last season. Knott, the subject of an intense national recruiting battle, confirmed Monday that he planned to accept an athletic scholarship from MSU next Wednesday, the first day players officially can accept scholarships. But Michigan State officials aren't saying whether they still plan to offer a scholarship to Knott, who faces trial March 15 on charges that he raped a 13-year-old Detroit girl last July. University president M. Peter McPherson would not comment about Knott, citing NCAA rules that prohibit discussion of recruits. Williams could not be reached for comment. An NCAA spokeswoman said MSU could say what its policy was for such cases, but not make comments about the athlete. Knott is charged with first-degree criminal sexual conduct. If convicted of the felony, he would face a maximum sentence of life imprisonment. He will be tried as an adult because of the severity of the case, prosecutors said, even though he was 17 at the time of the incident. Knott, who turned 18 this month, is pleading not guilty, his attorney said.

Mick sent me a nice reply...illogical, but at least not shitty: _____ When I wrote "in this state," I meant a high school athlete from this state. Also, I believe Jeanrette didn't commit his crimes until just before he enrolled at MSU. This was tied into signing day. To show you I don't have as double standard . . . Do you remember the name Otis Mounds? He was a Florida kid who spent his junior year in jail. George Perles offered him a scholarship and was going to sign him until a wrote a column similar to the one I wrote today. MSU withdrew its offer. Had MSU signed Dorsey, the column would have been the same. Thanks for taking the time to write. Mick

Your letter is the kind of stuff that keeps the Free Press going. Without attention, there is no reason to write stories. Basically, you help the Freep. Thanks a lot.

Sorry, dude. Not buying it. We all hope Dorsey does the team and the U proud but if lil brother recruited him and he went there you'd use it a EXHIBIT A of their... ...inferiority ...lack of standards ...several other ials and isms And don't bother negging me, you know I'm right.

Gotta jump in here. While I'm as glad as anyone that Jenrette is off MSU's team, the situation is not exactly as you describe. You say that Jenrette's criminal history was known by MSU when he was recruited. How do you know this? Certainly you can believe it, but what evidence do you have that proves it? What we know is that in 2008--when Jenrette was arrested for the second time--Dantonio sent him home to deal with "personal issues," and he was suspended for the entire season. We don't know when Dantonio learned about his history, but it's certainly possibly that it wasn't until then. After a year away from the team, he was allowed back. Could you have made the argument at that time that it was a mistake? Certainly. It would have been entirely legitimate to question this move. And it would have been equally legitimate to argue that the kid had paid the price, and had earned a second chance. After the fight, it's easy to conclude Dantonio screwed up here. And I know it's pretty popular here to portray MSU fans as a bunch lawless thugs who care only about winning (just as MSU fans like to portray UM in the same way), but it's off base. I'm as troubled about the incident at Rather Hall, and how it was handled, as you probably are. I think anyone who threw a punch that night should be off the team, or at the very least, suspended for a good portion of the season. Mark Dantonio's taken plenty of heat for what happened the night of the football banquet, as he should, but I think it's inaccurate to claim a pro-MSU bias. Rich Rod just has a knack for fueling the fire. My two cents.

C'mon...Jenrette wasn't "sent home" by Dantonio. He was sent home by the Florida Courts. Winston was "suspended" while in jail. He had no choice. I don't think MSU fans are lawless thugs. Maybe dumb hillbillies (I kid, I kid...takes balls to post here, Sparty). I do think their Coach is a hate-filled, hypocrite who cares about nothing but attacking Michigan. He'd lose every game on purpose if that would hurt Michigan. As for your statement that Dantonio has taken "plenty of heat". Really? Has he granted one interview on the subject? Answered any questions? Press conference? He's got a chunk of his team pleading guilty in the last couple days, and the big story is STILL how Dorsey fucked up at age 15. That's the opposite of heat.

I'd love it if he'd sit down and talk about it. He's been asked about it in pressers and he's given short two-sentence responses like Rich Rod when asked about Dorsey. I wish he'd spill his guts and say everything he can on the subject. I think what happened at Rather Hall is a an indictment of the second-chance he gave Winston, and the "everyone-deserves-a-second-chance" mantra that seems entrenched in college sports. I said then, and say now, that he screwed up there. By "taken plenty of heat," I mean he's taken a (deserved) beating in the press. Finally, I don't think he's hate filled. He does hate UM, no question. But he's pretty luke warm on everyone else he plays. He's actually a pretty mellow guy for the most part.

Count me as one Michigan Man who would much rather not talk about any MSU player in this context. To me, this isn't about MSU at all, except insofar as pricks like Drew Sharp and Mick McCab bring it up. Those guys are the ones, first and foremost, to talk about the allged blindness of Michigan fans, who they would treat MSU equally, etc. Personally, I don't care about your Spartans. And I have no intention of using Free Press stories about Michigan, as an excuse to run down MSU, or to complain about Mark Dantonio or his predecessors. My problem is this: No matter how you slice it, no matter what anybody's opinion might be, the Free Press has a double standard with its reporting on the Rich Rodriguez-led Michigan Wolverines. Stories that would never have been reported, never investigated, are now being pursued, with a vengeance, by a variety of Freep columnists. And among those columnists, Mick McCAbe is just lying when he claims that there have never been any major football recruits to compare with Demar Dorsey. As this blog has pointed out, there are lots of other examples. They all put the lie to Mick McCabe. McCabe is a liar and a fabricator for having run with this story. I hope, and expect, that Mick McCabe is going to have to eat this story in a few years. I'd like to make ceratin that he has to eat it in the most humiliating way possible. None of that has anything to do with the Spartans.
