Michigan Vs them (OSU) - Tweet of an Insider

Submitted by A_Maized on December 18th, 2019 at 9:59 PM

There is a lot of focus on recruiting, but less on how we fall behind the top 5 level due to our athletic program overall. There are many reasons beyond the direct efforts and evaluations of the football staff that lead to big signing classes of elite players.  I’m not on the “bagmen” train, I think we have to improve our culture and our marketing.  Rogers spent a lot of time with our program and while he lacks specific detail that seems to be a product of being behind in every way.

I have no idea who the hell this guy is or if he’s actually credible on anything. But he’s probably right, and not because he’s some hotshot insider.

No, he’s probably right because I didn’t need him to convince me. I already knew. I’ve seen the on-field product of both teams. One is good, occasionally shows flashes of being great. One is downright elite and is an NFL-lite team year in and year out. That’s just the way it is, and I’m honestly at peace with that. I’m not going to pretend this program is something that it isn’t.

It could be something more, but currently, it’s not. And I’m okay with that.

"and while he lacks specific detail"

That's understating it.

"I spent nearly 3 years working at Michigan... After spending 12 hours inside OSU yesterday I have one thought... Michigan is way behind."

I went through that entire thread, as well as the rest of his twitter feed. There isn't a single solitary bit of evidence or explanation he offers as to just exactly in what way "Michigan is way behind."

To the contrary, several commenters ask him for specifics, and he refuses with the "if you have to ask then I'm not going to tell you" response that I used to get from my teenage daughter.

Now it's obvious that OSU is ahead of Michigan on the field, but Rogers is implying heavily that it's marketing and graphics that are an important part of its dominance. As a designer with 37 years in the biz myself, I've been long accustomed to hearing designers make inflated claims about the impact of what they do, and Rogers is no different. He's hyping himself in a roundabout way.

OSU's graphics seem important because of the success on the field, which is directly related to who they have for coaches. If OSU hired Rich Rodriguez for HC, Ty Rogers wouldn't be able to create any amount of graphics to offset the effects of bad coaching.

So look at his tweet history.

Guy gets new job at OSU. Michigan camera guy un follows his twitter account.

Immediately Guy puts out this tweet about Michigan way behind and later qualifies that he's talking everything (including imaging/camera stuff).

All I get out of this is that some guy wants to make his current employer look good and raged on social media against someone who just un-followed/friended him. Seen this before will see it again.

The only way to fix this is by leveling the playing field, which means using bagmen. You're out of touch with reality if you think otherwise.

oh, for fuck's sake.

some rando ex-athletic department staffer tweets something that includes literally zero detail, so "bagmen?"

and honestly - one of the many, many problems with the dave brandon regime was its emphasis on marketing and brand and all that shit.  let's not go back to that, shall we?

Ye, gods.  A concern-troll citing a twitter-vid douche (who sounds like he got shit canned) has morphed into people talking out their asses, making up all kinds of wildly false information.

Here are the real stats that Eeyores should remember.

Truth:

From 2015-2019, Michigan has a top-10 winning percentage, and only these schools are significantly higher:  Clemson, Alabama, OSU, and Oklahoma.  Two of those are in the ACC or Big 12 and don't have strength of schedule that Big 10 and SEC schools do.

From 2016-2019, Michigan has recruited as well as Clemson and Oklahoma.

From 2016-2019, Michigan got about as many players drafted into the NFL as Clemson, LSU, Oklahoma, and Georgia.

Record 2015-12/1/2019:

Swinney (Clemson): 67-4 = 94%
Saban (Alabama):  65-6 = 92%
Meyer (OSU):  45-6 = 88%
Riley (Oklahoma): 35-5 = 88%
Smart (Georgia): 43-11 = 80%
Mullen (Florida): 20-5 = 80%
Orgeron (LSU):  37-9 = 80%
Chryst (Wisconsin):  52-14 = 79%
Franklin (PSU):  48-17 = 74%
Harbaugh (Michigan): 47-17 = 73%
Kelly (Notre Dame):  46-17 = 73%
Petersen (Washington):  46-20 = 70%
Fisher (TA&M):  16-9 = 64%

Avg recruiting ranking 2016-2019:

Alabama:  2.0
Georgia:  3.0
OSU:  5.5
LSU:  7.25
Oklahoma: 10.5
Michigan:  10.75
Clemson:  11.0
Florida: 11.5
Notre Dame:  12.75
TA&M:  13.0
