Michigan pursuing Miss St. DT transfer Fabien Lovett

Submitted by Gentleman Squirrels on April 8th, 2020 at 2:49 PM

Michigan has reached out to Lovett, a 6’3 330lb DT from Miss St.

Lovett entered the transfer portal after Leach posted a meme depicting a noose which his family did not like. He’s so far heard from Michigan, Houston, Florida, FSU, Tenn., Oregon, Ole Miss, and Houston and has expressed that he would like to take visits to FSU, Oregon, Tenn., and Michigan.

He is originally from Mississippi and was ranked #437 in the class of 2018. He redshirted in 2018 and then had 19 tackles and 2.5 tackles for loss in 2019. His connection to Michigan is through Bob Shoop who used to be the DC at Miss St last year.

Leach seems to be suffering from some culture shock. He probably should have stayed out west.

Well he did spend like 15-16 years coaching in the south so I doubt there’s a lot of culture shock.

He sent out something that would probably be pretty innocuous to most people in his circle of friends.  I suspect he didn’t consider that his Twitter audience is not  the same as his circle of friends.

He is a history buff so hopefully he takes some time to brush up on Mississippi history.

I hope we pass. This sounds like a kid who is too sensitive and may be a locker room cancer.

Haha. Yes; that’s it. Or could be a guy who is tired of seeing everyone get offended by every little thing.

Leach in no way, shape, or form implied  anything about race. It was a joke about husbands and wives being irritated with each other during the lockdown. That’s all. Those jokes are all over Facebook.

Now, Leach obviously didn’t realize his audience. No doubt there. But to transfer over something Leach didn’t even realize would offend?  And make it a race issue?  Yah, thanks but no thanks. Calm down kid. He made a mistake, one which was not rooted in hatred, and apologized. Get over it.

This isn't Mike Leach's first rodeo when it comes to tweeting dumb, possibly-offensive things.  And at this point, Leach has been a major-college HC for decades; I don't even see why he thought it was a good idea to tweet something that, at best, is a dumb shitpost to his Twitter feed.  He makes $5M a year and when you are the highest-paid public employee in your state that means you should have the internal governor to say "is this picture with an old lady fashioning a noose REALLY worth posting?"

Yes, I'm sure Leach wasn't trying to subconsciously tell people he wanted to lynch members of his team (or anyone else, for that matter).  But coming from the guy who tweeted a clearly-doctored video of Obama a couple years ago and seemingly didn't realize it was so until that was repeated to him multiple times, being situationally unaware and lazy isn't going to be a pass.

For a “guy who is tired of seeing everyone get offended by every little thing”, this seems to have you somewhat offended.  Maybe the kid is a bit tired of hearing about all the things he should just get over.   That confederate flag, just get over it.   That cop giving you extra scrutiny, just get over it.   Those people looking at you like they’re scared you might jump them, just get over it.

Maybe he expected more from his coach.  Maybe he expected that someone getting paid $5 million a year would have the sense to think before making a dumb tweet that anyone with half a brain could see might be perceived the wrong way by a good chunk of the people he is supposed to be coaching.  Maybe he’s seen other times  Leach “didn’t realize his audience “.   Maybe it was only one example of a number of examples of Leach using poor judgement that Lovett has witnessed.

Maybe I’m being an asshole in making a snap judgement about someone I don’t know based on a few posts on a message board.   Maybe you really can tell Lovett is “too sensitive” and “a locker room cancer” based on assumptions you are making about him.  Maybe you’re an asshole for feeling the need to post crap about a kid you don’t even know.    Maybe all three of those things are true or maybe none of them are.    I’ve got my own opinions on which of the three is most likely to be true.  I’ll give you one hint, it isn’t the one about Lovett.

Yes, there's context for everything and Mike Leach is the head coach of a football team in rural Mississippi. He's gotta have more self awareness than that, even though he was obviously referring to a suicide attempt rather than a lynching. There's things that fly if you're an average Joe, not a public figure

You can't teach 6'3" 330. I don't even care if he can push the pocket. I just care that he can eat up double teams like they're a pair of honey-glazed hams.

As last year showed, compared to 2017 & 2018, we desperately need a big boy or two in the middle to either hold down double teams (a la Bryan Mone) or to be a fast, disruptive penetrator (a la Maurice Hurst), so we should take this guy in a heartbeat.  Pair him with Chris Hinton and Mazi Smith as they develop into reliable starters

You don't want him.

What makes you think he would make an impact here when he couldn't even get playing time for Oklahoma's defense? He was so far down on the depth chart that they moved him to guard despite the fact they were going to be graduating three DT from their rotation.

Quite frankly, I don't even think Michigan wants him.

If we get him, could we invite his uncle, Lyle, to sing the National Anthem before a game?

I think Mike Leach is a beady-eyed jerkoff who happens to have a very good pr person.  I thought this before the noose nonsense as well.
