Well thank you.  I was a registered Democrat long ago.  Then Bill Clinton's lies (and many other things) broke me of the illusion that my party was always right.  I started to listen to the other side and went whole hog the other way in my voting.  Didn't register this time.  Then a lot happened and Obama was an easy choice (though McCain was an excellent public servant and the way he was treated in the media was deplorable, as a hat tip to your original critique of me).  Then it was a choice between orange man and Hillary and I just couldn't.

We've arrived here in large part because of echo chambers.  It's there that outrageous ideas go unchallenged and the other side is dehumanized.  And this blog is certainly one of those, where its proprietors both here and on social media serve one side (easily demonstrated by the fact they're now mod'ing the site when they haven't done so in months/years).  And I don't know how anyone can rationally serve either.  Parties should be blown to pieces.  And get out of here - not you, but the "we're better on more issues than they are" guys sure to follow me in this thread - with that he said / he said nonsense.  Biden's record on policies that directly affect violence on black people is deplorable and lengthy.  His recent "You ain't black" is hilariously racist.  Trump's comments are ridiculously racist and dangerous.  We're here because of echo chambers.  Your party is full of racist assholes.  I'm talking to both parties.

‘But by all means continue to get riled up with your pre-packaged box of party ideals and having those reinforced by those of the same ilk, while together you holler at those Others who have a pre-packaged set of party ideals that come in a different color box.‘.

This is what you immediately reached for.    Guess what we all (including you) come at things with preconceived notions and subconscious biases.    There is very little in your responses that suggests you aren’t too.   I would look in a mirror before you get on your high horse and preach about the way other people look at issues.

I know you don't like to hear it.  Most don't.  That's why they lock the chamber door shut behind them.  But you need to read and think about things that make you uncomfortable.

Things need to change in this country.  What exactly?  Start with the two party system, and the idea that my guys are good and the other guys are bad.  It's very simple and obvious.  Start with the low hanging fruit.  Toss away the comfort of your party affiliation, it's preposterous when you step back and examine it rationally.

Sharing Nike’s statement isn’t taking a stand. Nike, really? Black lives matter, but ignore the countless brown lives in SE Asia who toil away in our sweat shops.

I personally think the current big evil in America is the gap between rich and poor

In order to heal society the focus should be on kids.  All kids need good food, healthcare and great schools.

Poverty is the great injustice IMO.

Yes, socioeconomics should be looked at, but not at the expense of racial injustice. The two are interlinked in my opinion. Solving the health care, education, and school crisis may not help us understand why a black family of four with a college educated head earns less than a white family of four who's head has a high school education.

What you view as racial injustice would end if the socioeconomic conditions of black Americans was improved to that of white Americans.

Why were the cops called on George Floyd? Because he was using a counterfeit bill and the store clerk called the police on him.

He wasn't killed because he was a black man walking down the street and a suddenly a white officer got out  of his vehicle and choked him to death. He was killed because his position in life led to a police interaction that ended in the worst possible way.

There's consistent evidence to support that racism is a clear factor. Sociology, cognitive psychology, empirical evidence all show the impact of race. There are experiments where they isolate race in job applications as the only difference and the results show that white men with a criminal history are favored over Black men who go to college.

I think there's a root to the problem that is a difficult solve.

What kind of person wants to be a cop in the first place?  It's a cheap, largely uneducated position that wields wayyyy too much power.  It's going to attract a lot of bad apples.

I'm curious of the public policy research on effective police recruiting. One interesting idea has been to set of incentives to recruit more women. Policing work largely involves de-escalation techniques, and it has been shown that when more women are on the force (and in leadership positions), they are correlated with lower uses of excessive force. However, correlation is not causation.

The number one policy I'd have for police officers is that they have to live in the community they work in.  Obviiously, it would be tough to have them all live there, but I believe the stat for Minneapolis PD was 5%(!) of the police officers actually live in Minneapolis.

Police having a relationship with their own community would be a good starting place IMO.

About one third (30.2 percent) of police officers in the United States have a four-year college degree. A little more than half (51.8 percent) have a two-year degree, while 5.4 percent have a graduate degree.

Not sure how you solve the problem is the thing.  It's just not a job a lot of people want.  Especially some one who went to college and has options.

That's a fantastic point. It's a position that used to be respected in society, but has now been painted by the brush of the bad apples you're referring to. How many good officers are being screamed at, assaulted by flying objects, etc. right now because of the actions of 4 asshole officers in Minneapolis? I hope all four of those officers are tried (and convicted) for their roles in that crime, but they've set the country back a long way in race relations in general, a crime they can't be tried for.

More to your point... it's a low paying, very dangerous position. They are asked to make decisions in a moment, and then be judged for that decision by people that have the clarity, and time to think the situation through in hindsight. In today's world of social media, 24/7 news, and the general "fuck the police" attitude prevailing in the country, why would any decent person possibly want to get into law enforcement?

It's not a few bad apples. These guys were veterans. They've had many complaints about them over many years from citizens. They've gone unchecked by their peers and leadership and allowed to continue operating . There's an entire culture of police departments required to enable this behavior, so it's not just a few bad apples. Add to that, police departments are enforcing the racist structures of our society. The level of protest you're seeing now wouldn't be happening if racist policing were rare. We are addressing a much bigger problem in our society than a few racists.

So... are all officers racist, or at least complicit in supporting a racist law enforcement structure? You're painting a pretty critical component of civilized society with a very broad brush, I'm not sure that's fair, or accurate.

Back to my original point... who the hell would want to be a police officer in today's world?

The real problem is the violence and crime in the black community.  Facts.

I thought this was a sports blog?  I am very invested in what is happening in the country, but this isn't the forum for it.  I don't come here to hear about it.  I have my sources and boards where I rant about politics.  I don't do it here.  This place is a welcome reprieve from all of that.  At least, it was.

If you are liberal, great. If you are conservative, great. If you are racist, fuck you. If you generalize, fuck you. Stop police brutality. Stop the riots. Continue the peaceful protests. No more arguing MGoBlog. Please. Also I love that genesse(spelling?) county police chief.
