Michigan football on social media - Harbaugh plans to be back in 2023
Michigan football has posted on both IG and FB, a quote from Coach Harbaugh. He's seen the rumors, and while no man knows the future, he fully expects to be back, enthusiastically coaching at Michigan in 2023.

Thank you! Go Blue!
January 5th, 2023 at 4:38 PM ^
but was he sitting on Santa's lap when he told him what he wants??
January 5th, 2023 at 5:07 PM ^
he seems quite a bit bigger than Santa though? hopefully a short list, and quickly back up before Santa's legs fell asleep...
January 5th, 2023 at 4:42 PM ^
And, even this will not satisfy the demands of certain fans…
January 5th, 2023 at 4:45 PM ^
I can still see people wondering about that no one knows the future stuff and would prefer him to just say “I’m not interested in any NFL job, I will not be taking any NFL job, I only want to coach at Michigan, and I will continue to coach at Michigan.”
January 5th, 2023 at 5:09 PM ^
Yes, I would prefer that. The man has a job for life if he wants it. It would be great to hear that he does.
January 5th, 2023 at 5:10 PM ^
...until I can no longer coach or they want me gone."
January 5th, 2023 at 5:30 PM ^
Why on earth would Harbaugh undercut his negotiating position prior to having his contract extension in place? He’s telling us where his heart is, give him some room to breathe.
January 5th, 2023 at 5:40 PM ^
There was a tweet that talked about this. Said if he gives a definitive answer his (brother's) agent loses all leverage in negotiating anything at all for a new contract.
January 5th, 2023 at 8:51 PM ^
Is this really true?
The guy is a michigan legend as a player and coach. He will get any contract that he wants by walking into Wardes office and saying "I'm JMFH I've been to 2 straight playoffs and I want $TEXAS"
Any agent who doesn't realize that is a fool. He is only burning bridges right now. If you want to go NFL, say so. If you want to stay, say so.
Only a fool will hold a heartfelt." I have not won a super bowl, I want to win one. It's the top of my profession. I lost to my brother and I just want to win that thing! Every player that I coach wants to be at the top of their profession and I do everything that I can to get them there. I hope that they afford me the same ambition that I encourage in them." Against Jim.
January 5th, 2023 at 5:43 PM ^
Probably because the details have been worked out with Warde and Santa and all that's left if for the regents to approve the contract.
January 5th, 2023 at 5:52 PM ^
That seems more likely than that he's still negotiating.
January 5th, 2023 at 5:57 PM ^
You can use other, better words if you're worried about your negotiating position. There are ways to put pressure on the admin to give you what you want without providing negative recruiting fodder.
January 5th, 2023 at 7:53 PM ^
Exactly. Why is that so hard for some to understand?
January 5th, 2023 at 4:48 PM ^
We are taking about one season, 2023. He controls the future yet still gives the ‘don’t know what the future holds’ line. This statement really says nothing new at all. It certainly isn’t a strong statement about his intentions. It remains vague, probably because he’s reserving the right to jump if the right NFL job presents itself. Otherwise he’d make a much more definitive statement.
January 5th, 2023 at 4:59 PM ^
you are 100% correct
But it's more than he disclosed in the past.
January 5th, 2023 at 5:03 PM ^
Exactly. He’s committing only to one more season. No new contract, no new buyout. This does nothing except move the discussion forward one year. It does nothing for recruiting.
January 5th, 2023 at 5:06 PM ^
The one thing that Jim Harbaugh has been unequivocal about is that he won't make unequivocal statements.
While some might feel comforted to hear something more, it defies reason to expect it.
January 5th, 2023 at 5:37 PM ^
Diplo, respectfully - I do believe there is one thing / statement he is unequivocal about.. and, that is… “Faith, Family, and Football”.
Beyond that - you are correct…
January 5th, 2023 at 7:26 PM ^
I think many people will argue whether his statement equivocates—just look at the various interpretations of his statement in this thread alone. He hasn’t been exactly clear in his statements. That’s not to say he hasn’t been forthright. I believe he has and always has been which is why his official statement today contains outs and precatory language. So when he says he intends to coach Michigan in 2023, I believe him literally—he intends to coach Michigan for 2023, nothing more nothing less. He is not committing to anything beyond next year at this time because in his mind he can’t. He will not lie.
Here’s hoping his NFL flirtation is merely his agent seeking leverage on a long term contract at Michigan. If so and one gets signed, I bet his official statement announcing it will be nothing like the one he put out here.
January 5th, 2023 at 5:44 PM ^
Then don't put an out in one's statement.
January 5th, 2023 at 5:48 PM ^
b/c "even this" is not unequivocal. i don't blame him for wanting to go back to the NFL, but if he wants to spend every offseason evaluating NFL offers, it's going to undermine his own recruiting & staff retention.
January 5th, 2023 at 7:23 PM ^
It isn't unequivocal but not sure that means very much.
Think of how often we hear a coach swear on a stack of jesuses that he will return only to leave for a different team a week later?
January 5th, 2023 at 8:46 PM ^
He is coming back unless something happens to him medically. Harbaugh would never throw out the “Those who stay will be Champions” quote and then leave. He respects Bo too much to disrespect that key tenet of the Michigan football program. Harbaugh would never take a dump on that quote by leaving immediately after quoting the famous Bo line.
January 7th, 2023 at 8:34 AM ^
Bingo!! So how much confidence does THIS half ass shit inspire?
January 5th, 2023 at 6:29 PM ^
There are many saboteurs...
January 5th, 2023 at 7:33 PM ^
Well he still hasn’t said no to the NFL. I can tell you news in Denver is the Broncos are basically Harbaugh or bust right now and they are really thinking they will get him. So there is that
January 5th, 2023 at 5:02 PM ^
We ought to make him the highest paid coach in college. 10-years, $125 million. Pay off his mortgage, buy him a Traverse City summer home. Everything Nick gets from Alabama. Jim is truly one of a kind.
January 5th, 2023 at 5:48 PM ^
Saban gave Alabama 6 titles to earn his benefits. JH deserves to be one of the highest paid coaches, no question. There is no justification for paying him more than Saban or Smart.
January 5th, 2023 at 6:26 PM ^
Yes there is...He doesn't coach in the SEC.
Harbaugh is just as good a coach or better based on NFL + college success. UM is a much tougher place to succeed than Bama.
And the Sabans and Smarts of the world know this and are therefore that much less likely to come to Ann Arbor - the same reason Crawfish Kelly left Notre Dame.
January 5th, 2023 at 6:45 PM ^
So basically what you’re saying is Smart and Saban coach in the SEC(a better conference than the BIG), they frequently have to play eachother (usually they are both the best teams in the conference), they have both won national titles, so Harbaugh deserves more money than them? Are you saying that making the CFP at M is the same as winning the national championship at UGA or Alabama? That’s nonsense. I’m not following your logic. I agree M is a tougher place to succeed, but he struggled plenty in his first 7 years. There’s no statistical argument you can use to justify paying him more than them.
January 5th, 2023 at 7:57 PM ^
No, I don't think that's what he said.
January 5th, 2023 at 7:41 PM ^
UM is a much tougher place to succeed than Bama
Exactly. Colin Cowherd made these same points today on the radio and encouraged U-M to pay Harbaugh whatever he wants. Jim is worth every penny of 10-years, $125 million. He is irreplaceable.
January 5th, 2023 at 6:09 PM ^
Pay him whatever he wants but put in a $250M buyout. Reduce it by $60M for each National Championship.
January 5th, 2023 at 6:23 PM ^
Rather than a monetary buyout, can it be written he’s only allowed to break the contract if John replaces him as HC?

January 5th, 2023 at 4:49 PM ^
He told my guy AK onward!
Bunch more players leaving it sounds like.
Coach Herb doesn't have enough room in the "prepare for the combine club" otherwise JW stays, and still might.
Freshman WR's being advised to avoid the dirty "poach coaches"
JD still comin'
BC coming back 75/25 but needs more than subway and a car.
1132
Cheers

Can I get translation for AK and 1132?

January 5th, 2023 at 5:13 PM ^
What does this say/mean?
Coach Herb doesn't have enough room in the "prepare for the combine club" otherwise JW stays, and still might.
January 5th, 2023 at 5:20 PM ^
Yeah... I'm confused. Does he mean that Coach Herbert doesn't have enough players voluntarily opting to prepare for the combine, and so they need Julius' scholarship? OTOH, read literally, it sounds like Herbert doesn't have time to train Julius for the combine, so he would transfer instead of declare, but that doesn't really make sense to me.
Time to rip open boxes of Cracker Jack until I find that GoJ decoder ring...

Thanks.
