This is an example of situational irony.  Perhaps if you look up or down on this chat thread you will see the names of Jim Harbaugh, John Harbaugh, and Matt Millen, none of which I would expect to actually be named Jim Harbaugh, John Harbaugh, or Matt Millen (I know I am assuming here).  In a story about two people meeting on an anonymous chat forum for Michigan fans and/or trolling Michigan fans, the best man's actual real name is Tom Brady.

Yes, having a friend named Jim Tressel, Urban Meyer, or Terrell Pryor would fall under the definition of situational ironiy as well.  But what do I know, I went to school on North Campus.

Not exactly, based on the definition of situational irony.  Situational irony is when the sequence of events occurring is direcly opposite of what one would expect.  For example, an injured person getting run over by an ambulance, or a police station getting robbed, or a fire station burning down.

A michigan fan being friends with someone named Tom Brady is not the opposite of what is expected, therefore it happening is not a good example of situational irony.

I agree that a Michigan fan being friends with a Tom Brady, but not that Tom Brady, is not ironic in and of itself.  In the context of this story, I find irony.  The two characters wind up married after meeting on a message board for Michigan fans where they knew eachother by their Michigan-themed screen names (e.g., AA_somethingorother and wolverinegurl) for a long period of time.  The story refers to them by their respective screen names throughout.  If I were to tell you that one of the characters in the story went by Tom Brady and that half of the characters in the story are referred to by their screen names, you'd expect Tom Brady to be one of the screen names and not one of the real ones.  At least I would have.  I mean in this thread alone there is a Jim Harbaugh, a John Harbaugh, and a Matt Millen.  Why not a Tom Brady.   And hence my finding of situational irony.

Well the guy named Tom Brady had a user name of "TheRealTomBrady" in the story, so one of the user names WAS Tom Brady. And it happened to be his real name as well.  It's  just a fitting coincidence that the best man in a wedding founded on a Michigan football blog is named Tom Brady.

I hate to disappoint all the single ladies on MGoBlog, but I'm taken.  Don't get any ideas...

Is it mean for me to be surprised at how normal looking they are for a couple that met on a message board sports blog?
