Mgosurgery on a Snowy Spring Night

Submitted by xtramelanin on May 10th, 2020 at 3:55 AM

Mates,

So I'm sitting in the recovery waiting room, one of the kids decided that an emergency appendectomy might be a great idea.  It came on fast this afternoon and evening and off we went to the ER.

it is quiet, I'm the only one here.  It's snowing outside.  Friday we had a mini blizzard that melted quickly but was enough to cause some collisions.  Even in the UP this much snow in May would be pretty wild.  We could use a little global warming, I'm never going to be able to plant corn if the snow keeps coming.

So the Doc just came out.  Thankfully no issues, should be able to go home later this a.m.  Some of you have dealt with so much worse with your loved ones.  There's an old saying, "there's no pain like kid pain".  I don't know how you got through it, how you kept putting one foot in front of the other.  God bless you for that courage.  Today we were not called on to summon that courage, but we all know on another day, each of us will be.

Hug those loved ones.  Don't miss those chances.  Hopefully with this damn C-19 you have at least had that opportunity with your family unit.  And if you were isolated, when the 'all clear' (or more likely, the give it a chance and we'll see what happens) is given you will relish those times and seek them out.

Blessings,

XM

Glad your kid’s going to be ok and you all will be home soon.  It is never a good feeling when someone you love is in pain.

Drive careful and safe, brighter days are ahead.

Hope the recovery goes well and you can enjoy being present during the healing process. There’s something special about Dad being needed no matter how old they are.

Good luck getting your corn in. I’ve delayed planting my garden to make sure we are past the last freeze. Supposedly there’s a chance for light snow here tonight as well.

Very glad to hear that everything's going to be OK. We had the same experience with our daughter when she was about 10—sudden onset of horrible abdominal pain that we couldn't explain initially until I had the funny feeling it was her appendix, which was confirmed by the ER doc, and not long after that she was in surgery. Of course, this happened at night, but sleeping in the hospital waiting room was nothing compared to the terror of seeing our kid in so much pain and potential danger.

Stay safe.

Evidently the appendix was not ruptured-thank goodness for that...have taken care of too many kids with that event. Laparoscopic or open surgery? May I ask where you go for medical care?

Even at 4 am in an uncomfortable waiting room you’re still one of the best posters around. Give my best wishes to all the young-uns and a hug from me to their special mom.

The common grace of excellent modern medicine is one we’ve been thankful for several times as parents. Glad to hear you guys are on track to come through this one rather smoothly.

Tough start to Mother’s Day, but I’m sure mom will be glad once you’re home.

Good luck to you and your family. Always good reflections of family life, up north, and other topics.

That being said, I have been awaiting/dreading the ER trip with young kids tearing around outdoors each day during this quarantine. 4 year olds building forts, climbing trees, playing swords, sticks, etc. with our quarantine neighbor boys has had a few bumps and cuts. Warms my heart to see, but drives me nuts the mayhem they take everywhere they go.

So far so good, knock on wood. Boys will be boys.

So glad to hear that the surgery went well. I'm about to start praying my novena this morning, and I will be sure to include you and your family.

As for the "How do you get through it?" question, I suspect you know the answer. Just remember to say a prayer of thanksgiving when you have a moment. Our gracious and Eternal God appreciates those, I'm sure.

That's quite the Mother's Day gift your kid decided to give - a successful recovery from surgery!  I'm sure Mom will enjoy that a lot!  Kids sure do come up with the craziest ideas, don't they?

Glad everything turned out well, despite the heartache in getting to that turn-out.

Glad to hear everything is OK XM...I wouldn't expect anything less from your farm-raised kids. Hang in there, speedy recovery to you and yours.

Good news XM to hear that your kid is okay and no rupture. Back up and running in no time. Very quickly the snow will melt, you will get your corn in, the trout will be chasing flies and summer will have arrived. God Bless you man!

Hoping for the best for you and your family.  I think everyone with kids has at least one good emergency room story.  Fortunately, mine are about broken bones and nothing worse than that.  Falling off the monkey bars at school resulting in arm fractures appears to be a family tradition.

I had an appendectomy when I was a pre-teen. Worse pain I ever had until I had a kidney stone many decades later. Now, that is pain not even the devil would want on himself. My grandpa said "just give him some asprin." Thank god my parents didn't listen to him. The only pain I give myself intentionally is hot peppers. I actually just had a Carolina Reaper Bean Boozled Jelly bean. That's no joke.

Regardless, glad your kid is okay and recuperating. It is something no kid should ever have to go but those damn appendixes have a mind of their own sometimes.

Buddy of mine used to lift with us. He was a truly tough MFer... He developed a stag horn kidney stone...I'd say he agreed with you. Said it was worse than being shot and he had to pass it. Honestly felt bad for the guy he was a mess for about a month.

I appreciate your story and gratitude. My wife and I just spoke about the importance of love, and to use this time to look at the positives instead of the negatives others my cause.

through love folks!!!

Hoping AND praying everything is going well in your youngster's recovery from surgery, XM, and that the family farm can quickly return to normal.

And as for the parents (especially mom, being Mother's Day!) did you both get any sleep in the aftermath of this emergency trip?

God bless you all, especially with good health!

Thankful your child has pulled through with an excellent prognosis. My appendix burst decades ago and the experience was quite painful but here I am, typing.

Prayers today for you and your family, Xtra. And a separate prayer for the corn and its bounty. All things considered, may this be your best year on the planet yet and with even better to come.

Glad to hear the little Melanin is going to be ok. I had the same procedure when I was 11; it hurt like hell and scared me even more!

God Bless. GO BLUE!

So happy to hear XMJr is now home and doing well. I confess I panicked a bit when my eyes were drawn to "ER" in your post, but then your saying you were sitting alone reminded me that in the UP you can probably go safely to an ER for "normal" urgent care without having to ask permission. In NYC right now the last place anyone would want to be would be in an ER.

Hope you're fast asleep now.  And all the best to your beautiful family.
