MGoBlog Relationship With The Athletic?

Submitted by Robbie Moore on October 23rd, 2019 at 3:09 PM

Listening to the latest Ace Podcast mention was made of a new relationship with The Athletic. This is the first I've heard of it though maybe it was discussed while I was out to lunch (which covers the greater part of my day). Anybody out there got any details?

[Ed-Seth: They're sponsors and we're going to look at different ways of collaborating down the road because we think they're awesome. See: https://mgoblog.com/content/unverified-voracity-slippery. We also have a code: if you go to http://theathletic.com/mgoblog when you sign up you'll get 40% off]

This is a good thing. Athletic is the best website for sports content now that SI went down the shitter after Maven bought and fired every respected journalist for a bunch of random bloggers from different cities/colleges making it a B-side Athletic essentially.

Athletic partnering with reputed bloggers would be great.

I also mourn the slow death of SI, it was a staple of my childhood.  Media has become technology driven and the temporal highway of technology is littered with the wrecks of past giants.  I remember visiting the palatial headquarters of Silicon Graphics in the 90’s and then watching them decay into nothingness.  Time passes and economies change.  If Brian wants to institute a paywall, well, it’s his business and I wish him the best of luck.

If that includes access to the rest of The Atlantic, then I’m sure it will be $60 well spent by many an mgoblog reader.  I won’t pay for The Atlantic right now, but if mgoblog ends up behind a paywall for a reasonable sum over there, I’m sure I won’t be in the minority of readers here who will pony up.

I think it would depend on what form it took.  My hope would be that the monthly fee would keep a certain kind of poster off the site.  This isn't the greatest place right now.  I am smelling way to much Axe body spray around this blog lately.

Do we know this to be an absolute truth?  I understand the logic if it's an assumption; why would you pay to be on a rival website just to troll and be a dick?  Still, does anyone have any data or experience with sites behind a paywall that shows paying for content results in an improved quality of member dialogue?

if they go to a pay model, traffic will decrease and the site will be more usable for those who do pay

Um, what? Will decreased traffic lead to:

  • A mobile app?
  • Ads no longer coming unglued and covering the message board or other content?
  • Points always working?
  • The page not going back to the top when you hit the Jump button?
  • Staying on the page where you just left your comment rather than being sent to the last page of the thread?
  • Going directly to the comment that you click on in a user's post history when it's not on the first page of the thread?
  • Tracking up and downvotes in the user's post history?
  • Seeing comments marked as new when you refresh?
  • Editing an OP?

Honestly I would miss the trolls, parody accounts, Bolivia and insta-bans. But if people are paying you probably can’t prevent them from starting threads or kick them out. If they violate a code of conduct you can kick them out but then you can’t take their money.

:-) hence the joke.  I was going to mention the ball lifters (sz xlarge)...well...ok, I'm tired of the ball lifter ads too.

BTW, somebody want to tell me what the benefit is to having your balls lifted?  I've been around the block, but that one is new for me.

It makes the bulge bulgier. Also supporting the balls during bedroom activities can help a guy last longer. However the product itself doesn't seem very healthy, the balls are supposed to hang at different heights depending on body temperature so they don't get too hot or cold. I've been told keepin' them high and tight for extended periods could cause long-term issues when it comes to swimmer production.

Disclaimer: although I went to college for 8 years, I am not a doctor.

Interesting side note, I’ve heard that the left and right consistently hang at different heights from one another to lessen the chance that a direct blow takes em both out (if they’re staggered, they won’t squish against each other).

disclaimer: I am a doctor but not a ball doctor and pretty sure I didn’t come across the above theory while in med school.

+1 informative

Avatar and username...probably does not check out.

And no wonder our team keeps fumbling. They won't hold the ball high and tight because they want kids some day.

Okay, I think I've run out of jokes here.

Seth, you did it wrong:

Dear Readers,

I am reaching out to let you know that the recent claims that we are “pursuing a pay model” are total crap. It’s a strategy driven by our enemies to cause disruption to our business model.

Please excuse the informality of this post but I felt that it was important to get this out to you as quickly as possible.

Feel free to reach out if you have any questions. Happy to discuss.

I have a subscription to the Athletic and love it.  And yes, MGoBlog would fit right in there if Brian decided to move to a pay model for content delivery.
