MGoBlog Relationship With The Athletic?
Listening to the latest Ace Podcast mention was made of a new relationship with The Athletic. This is the first I've heard of it though maybe it was discussed while I was out to lunch (which covers the greater part of my day). Anybody out there got any details?
[Ed-Seth: They're sponsors and we're going to look at different ways of collaborating down the road because we think they're awesome. See: https://mgoblog.com/content/unverified-voracity-slippery. We also have a code: if you go to http://theathletic.com/mgoblog when you sign up you'll get 40% off]

The Athletic has been popping up as a sponsor on the podcast and the site. Not sure if there's more than that.
October 23rd, 2019 at 4:57 PM ^
Why isn’t anyone talking about the Freep story about kids writing encouraging letters to Ronnie Bell? We still not linking to the Freep? I’m not gonna go ahead and link while also not creating a new thread...that never goes well for me...
October 23rd, 2019 at 7:09 PM ^
The freep is still DEAD to me

MGoBlog provides the level of detailed analysis The Athletic would surely be interested in partnering with - interested to see what comes of this.
October 23rd, 2019 at 3:16 PM ^
This is a good thing. Athletic is the best website for sports content now that SI went down the shitter after Maven bought and fired every respected journalist for a bunch of random bloggers from different cities/colleges making it a B-side Athletic essentially.
Athletic partnering with reputed bloggers would be great.
October 23rd, 2019 at 4:35 PM ^
SI was awful long before Maven got ahold of it.
October 23rd, 2019 at 8:59 PM ^
Yeah, Maven sucks. I mean, seriously. How did Michael Spath and Brandon Brown come to be employed by a company that also produces the likes of Sports Illustrated?
October 24th, 2019 at 5:38 AM ^
I also mourn the slow death of SI, it was a staple of my childhood. Media has become technology driven and the temporal highway of technology is littered with the wrecks of past giants. I remember visiting the palatial headquarters of Silicon Graphics in the 90’s and then watching them decay into nothingness. Time passes and economies change. If Brian wants to institute a paywall, well, it’s his business and I wish him the best of luck.
October 23rd, 2019 at 3:18 PM ^
hello 59.99/yr to access mgoblog
October 23rd, 2019 at 3:21 PM ^
If that includes access to the rest of The Atlantic, then I’m sure it will be $60 well spent by many an mgoblog reader. I won’t pay for The Atlantic right now, but if mgoblog ends up behind a paywall for a reasonable sum over there, I’m sure I won’t be in the minority of readers here who will pony up.
October 23rd, 2019 at 3:24 PM ^
I think it would depend on what form it took. My hope would be that the monthly fee would keep a certain kind of poster off the site. This isn't the greatest place right now. I am smelling way to much Axe body spray around this blog lately.
October 23rd, 2019 at 3:31 PM ^
I would pay for this exact reason. I'm allergic to Axe, so it would be money well spent.
October 23rd, 2019 at 3:45 PM ^
Oh my, this idea isn't good. I highly doubt the powers that be will accept eucalyptus leaves, bananas and termites on a stick as payment.
October 23rd, 2019 at 3:47 PM ^
Actually, I'd certainly pay. It'll cut down on the troll traffic.
October 24th, 2019 at 7:15 AM ^
Do we know this to be an absolute truth? I understand the logic if it's an assumption; why would you pay to be on a rival website just to troll and be a dick? Still, does anyone have any data or experience with sites behind a paywall that shows paying for content results in an improved quality of member dialogue?
October 23rd, 2019 at 3:24 PM ^
I subscribed when Baumgardner went there. I've been reading his stuff but not much else to be honest.
October 23rd, 2019 at 4:26 PM ^
Brendan Quinn and Austin Meek are excellent writers as well you will want to check out. If you liked the old M-Live Podcast with Nick & Brendan they are back together behind the Athletic firewall with some great stuff.
October 23rd, 2019 at 5:00 PM ^
I do like Quinn. There just hasn't been much basketball content since I joined. I loved the podcast talking about Beilein leaving.
October 23rd, 2019 at 3:27 PM ^
Athletic...Atlantic is something completely different.
But the Athletic has excellent stories that are well written. I think it's worth the cost now.
October 23rd, 2019 at 4:16 PM ^
You’re right my bad
October 24th, 2019 at 6:41 AM ^
And The Atlantic also recently went behind a paywall. The Venn diagram for Atlantic readers/MGoBlog readers might actually have a fair amount of overlap. That’s a dual subscription that I would pay for.
October 23rd, 2019 at 3:26 PM ^
With the Athletic thrown in? G'head and take my money. Hell, I'd probably pay that here if it were required.
(Yes, I know I could just donate that, but what you don't get is that I am a jerk.)
October 23rd, 2019 at 3:29 PM ^
If Mgoblog moves to a pay model, they will have to invest more in their barely functional website.
October 23rd, 2019 at 3:52 PM ^
MOAR HAMSTERS!!!
October 23rd, 2019 at 3:55 PM ^
Not to mention things like failing to do a ufr for OSU because... SADS.
October 23rd, 2019 at 6:28 PM ^
And a UFR for a bowl game.
October 23rd, 2019 at 4:18 PM ^
Counterpoint: if they go to a pay model, traffic will decrease and the site will be more usable for those who do pay, which will lead to increased readership and allow for increased capital investment in the future.
October 23rd, 2019 at 9:02 PM ^
if they go to a pay model, traffic will decrease and the site will be more usable for those who do pay
Um, what? Will decreased traffic lead to:
- A mobile app?
- Ads no longer coming unglued and covering the message board or other content?
- Points always working?
- The page not going back to the top when you hit the Jump button?
- Staying on the page where you just left your comment rather than being sent to the last page of the thread?
- Going directly to the comment that you click on in a user's post history when it's not on the first page of the thread?
- Tracking up and downvotes in the user's post history?
- Seeing comments marked as new when you refresh?
- Editing an OP?
October 23rd, 2019 at 9:42 PM ^
I hear you. Getting all of that fixed would be great, but getting the trolls off the site (most of them anyway) would be worth the price of admission.
October 23rd, 2019 at 10:09 PM ^
Honestly I would miss the trolls, parody accounts, Bolivia and insta-bans. But if people are paying you probably can’t prevent them from starting threads or kick them out. If they violate a code of conduct you can kick them out but then you can’t take their money.
October 23rd, 2019 at 3:43 PM ^
Yes please if we lose the shit ads and get a nice mobile app.
October 23rd, 2019 at 3:54 PM ^
You said it. I had no idea how many eastern European women want American husbands.
October 23rd, 2019 at 4:16 PM ^
Those are targeted ads...
October 23rd, 2019 at 4:38 PM ^
Have you seen his avatar pic?? Don't judge, RGard needs love too!
October 23rd, 2019 at 4:52 PM ^
Lady’s love the short dark and homely types.
October 23rd, 2019 at 5:02 PM ^
:-) hence the joke. I was going to mention the ball lifters (sz xlarge)...well...ok, I'm tired of the ball lifter ads too.
BTW, somebody want to tell me what the benefit is to having your balls lifted? I've been around the block, but that one is new for me.
October 23rd, 2019 at 6:56 PM ^
It makes the bulge bulgier. Also supporting the balls during bedroom activities can help a guy last longer. However the product itself doesn't seem very healthy, the balls are supposed to hang at different heights depending on body temperature so they don't get too hot or cold. I've been told keepin' them high and tight for extended periods could cause long-term issues when it comes to swimmer production.
Disclaimer: although I went to college for 8 years, I am not a doctor.
October 23rd, 2019 at 8:22 PM ^
Interesting side note, I’ve heard that the left and right consistently hang at different heights from one another to lessen the chance that a direct blow takes em both out (if they’re staggered, they won’t squish against each other).
disclaimer: I am a doctor but not a ball doctor and pretty sure I didn’t come across the above theory while in med school.
October 23rd, 2019 at 9:26 PM ^
ok, thanks. I learned something today.
October 24th, 2019 at 9:20 AM ^
+1 informative
Avatar and username...probably does not check out.
And no wonder our team keeps fumbling. They won't hold the ball high and tight because they want kids some day.
Okay, I think I've run out of jokes here.
October 23rd, 2019 at 6:10 PM ^
Porn surfing will place those type of ads! I always get Happy Egg adds, all yum and no yuk!
October 23rd, 2019 at 5:22 PM ^
Yes, those are targeted ads, European women crave diminutive hairy American men.
October 23rd, 2019 at 7:49 PM ^
Lots, especially from Slovenia
October 24th, 2019 at 6:55 AM ^
Never happening.
Never.
October 24th, 2019 at 7:21 AM ^
That sounds somewhat definitive.
October 24th, 2019 at 9:25 AM ^
Seth, you did it wrong:
Dear Readers,
I am reaching out to let you know that the recent claims that we are “pursuing a pay model” are total crap. It’s a strategy driven by our enemies to cause disruption to our business model.
Please excuse the informality of this post but I felt that it was important to get this out to you as quickly as possible.
Feel free to reach out if you have any questions. Happy to discuss.
October 24th, 2019 at 9:25 AM ^
I mean, I already pay $50 to get HTTV and a T-shirt every year. Not a huge difference
October 23rd, 2019 at 3:24 PM ^
I took it as Nick Baumgartner would be calling in to Ace's podcast.
October 23rd, 2019 at 3:24 PM ^
I have a subscription to the Athletic and love it. And yes, MGoBlog would fit right in there if Brian decided to move to a pay model for content delivery.
