Today's epic Lloyd Carr thread and crazy comments therein revealed a problem with the current MGoSystem (in my opinion).  Numerous of the interesting comments were down-rated and thus hidden from view.  I know there was a big push to hide/block certain posters, but the current rating system allows even just one down-rater to cause a post to be hidden from easy view.  For example, in the mgopoints thread I rated someone's post as "redundant" and it hid their comment from view.  Obviously, that was not my intention and the result will discourage me from down-rating posts in the future.  I do not think this was the intended result of the new system.

So, query whether there is a way to prevent posts from being hidden until they reach a certain point of flameworthiness.  Any thoughts?

EDIT:  How do I get downvoted for this thread?  Not that I'm worried about it, I'm actually interested how it can be thought of as negative.

Most of us rubber neck the greyed out comments anyway, just to witness the trainwreck.  If its worth reading it'll get upvoted back into the light.

With that said, most of us also dont downvote anymore unless the reasonable response to said post would be a simple "Derp" (yeah, I'm lookin at you section 1) where a downvote is just a little less rude.

I mentioned this in the mgopoints thread, but my main issue with the new points/score metric is it doesn't allow us to see how bad a trainwreck someones post is, I am looking at His Dudeness's post that we all remember. I would be interested in what the actual score was and not just -1, same with really good replies, I want to see how high it was over +5. Sometimes I don't have time to read through every comment and skim for good/bad posts and a total score of the post is interesting to me at least. Any way, I think Brian will probably try to fix the vote actually being added to the user's overall points pool.

I can't seem to vote right now.  Whereas I had the option yesterday to pick form the drop down menu of voting options, today that is not available to me.

I just hate that the range is -1 to +5. When you have threads that exceed 200 replies like that one, it used to be easier to skim through the comments to see which ones were the most voted on.

Just bring back the points total, it's not like we have a bunch of cancerous threads with pointless trolling. There's maybe one post per twenty threads that gets destroyed by points, I don't see how it's a big detraction to anyone to have to scroll past that comment if they so choose. I think it's pretty obvious how people feel about posts they vote on, and I don't think word modifiers are really necessary. This not only shoves away posts that someone decides to downvote for whatever reason, but really limits the possibiltiy of another classic meltdown. I'll take dealing with the sparce troll to witness the bi-monthly major meltdown.

If you commented that Mother Teresa, Martin Luther King Jr., and Ghandi were worthwhile human beings, somebody would neg you. It's just the way things are around here.
