Meta: So what exactly is appropriate for OT season?

Submitted by rockediny on

First of all, I hope this doesn't get deleted since I'm hoping it turns out to be educational.

I'm the one who created the recently deleted post about Bill Burr trolling Michigan fans and while I kinda understand why it was getting negged, I don't understand why it was deleted by the mods. After reading a few "this board is cancer" comments, I explained on the post that a few weeks ago an mgoblogger was looking for decent podcasts to listen to and I thought this would be a good way to introduce some mgobloggers to one I enjoy. Also, I didn't know how to link a podcast on my phone etc. When I refreshed the page, the post was gone and I didn't get to fully read the comments and learn what I did so wrong. What I know is I didn't include a link (I was in the process of doing that) and apparently, Bill Burr isn't as famous as I thought. Other than that, why was my topic deleted while "PSU Fans/Students...", "Acceptable or Unacceptable" and a topic about Jeter's girlfriend wearing a Michigan shirt remain?

I'm usually a lurker and only create a topic about once every other year. While I don't see myself ever creating another board post after this one, I'd just like to know what the rules are so I know what I did wrong. Hopefully some posters can learn from it also.

Edit: Just to be clear, being negged isn't the issue, it's the deleting of what I thought was a legitimate topic. I'm mostly disappointed the mods didn't allow me to experience my first negbang fully.

I thought the comments on the PSU fan piece looked more like RCMB than MGoBlog, and the parody post simply wasn't funny.  I wondered myself why it wasn't deleted, but I am enjoying free content here, so I tend to "go with the flow."  Besides, nobody forces anyone to click onto any topic.

I think OT is still "post at your own risk."  You never know what OT other people are going to like or dislike.

Let's see how many ways the answer, "it's not what was posted, but who posted it" can be explained in different words.

WD seems to be the only one who posted information rich OP, but gets negged.  And he gets lots of upvotes if it's not another apparel thread.  There was no link and very little meat in terms of information.  I didn't want the thread removed because I like reading snark on Mondays.

That thread was not deleted because of who posted.  It sucked because it basically read: "A guy said a thing about UM.  It wasn't informational or funny, but he said something.  Go google it if you want to know more about this guy or his comments."

I think it would have been fine if the OP said, "I was listening to Bill Burr this morning - he's a guy that you might know from X and he's relevant because Y - and he mentioned UM this morning.  Here's what he said: '<< add info here>>'   I like Bill Burr.  I think he's funny and you might like him  too.  Here's how you can learn more about Bill Burr and all the great things he has to offer you: LINK"

As for the OPs newest question of what's allowed, in my opinion, absolutely everything is allowed, just provide some context about why I might care.  I find many of the OT stuff very interesting but only when they provide context.  Simply providing a link to a tweet or a link to an article (especially if they are OT) is never going to get my approval.  To be clear, a random opinion based solely on your feeling is not considered context.

I negged because there was lacking information.  No link, no quote, nothing else (or context).  From there in spiraled into our imagination which is apparantly a weird place

I tried not to sensationalize it. The title was "Bill Burr troll Michigan fans a little" and I said it was "nothing major" and he "briefly" mentions the team in the first "5 minutes" of the episode. Any quote would've have ruined the funny part. The goal was to introduce the podcast that's why I said people should give the whole thing a listen.

For shits and giggles. Bill Burr is a very successful and respected American comedian. He has performed specials for HBO, Showtime, and Netflix amongst others.

He played a recurring role for a season or two on AMCs Breaking Bad, created and stars in the Netflix animated comedy F is for Family, and has appeared in a few Chappelle Show sketches as well.

He is pretty much a rage comic in alot of ways in the mold of a Lewis Black. Angry observationist.

itself was kind of a mess, no link, no real "take" on the issue, no explanation as to who Bill Burh was (it appears though a lot of people, myself included, don't know who he is), and the fact that it was NSFW to begin with meant that anybody at work (let's face it, a lot of us), were not going to read it at the time.

Also, the thread may have been starting to take on a life of its own because nobody had really anything to say about the OP.  Pointless threads can dissolve into like an M-live comments section involving politics and controversial topics even if that is not what you intended, people tend to take things in their own direction and before you know it you have a highly divisive thread for no reason.

It may not have been your OP (though it was lacking really anything of substance), it could have been that a sub-thread had been started that was going bad fast and there was just no reason to keep the post up.

am i the only one who clicks NSFW links from this site without worrying? The people here have more sense than to post something that will really get me in trouble.

depends.  I don't know much about computers/servers, what is saved where, what could be extracted when a server is replaced.  I don't want to go to any sites that could be viewed as inappropriate at work.  There are some completely harmless sites that I would like to read that I don't because they have questionable pictures on the sides of the pages.  If somebody writes NSFW I am not going to that site.

because you had zero context. If you had done the following, I'm sure you wouldn't have been negbombed.

1) Explained who Bill Bur is and why he is anyone we should care about (I still don't know who he is).

2) Summarized his comments

3) Gave an opinion of the comments

EDIT: See the "Well...Bye" post and that's why he's getting negged as well.

above.  The negging of the OP and the removal of the thread were likely not related. I started a thread worse than yours when I first started around here where I got like 150 negs and was obliterated in the comments section and it stayed up.  But it stayed up because everything stayed light hearted and the comments themselves were funny.

The removal of your post likely had something to do with something that was brewing in the comments and a mod spotted it and deleted it before it really had a chance to flame up.  If the topic is relevant and informational, they will just delete the actual problematic sub-thread and let everybody else carry on but when it is an irrelevant topic and "down-side only" they just take down the whole thing.

Because many people who post here are chid like and can't avoid trying to be the cool guy in the room. Often first time posts will get blown up if the comments go down a dark road of negative hate filled replys.. It is teh mods way of getting out infront.

If people were adults they would simply have figured out you don't post often and given constructive criticism, but many here just want to be the dick in a room full of dicks.

This board often is an amazing source of information, but as is with any message board too many people think it is THEIR message board and they get to dictate things. They really only want to have their Threads here or they want to tell everyone how much they suck.

What I find funny is someone such as yourself with a fresh topic(while maybe poorly thought out) is piled on we consistantly allow WD to post the most trivial UM things.

Also offseason is always a long long struggle.

What's allowed is ambiguous and depends completely on the MgoHivemind at the time the thread is posted. OT must still abide by board rules, aka no sexybits, politics, etc. Basically OT at your own risk. If you are sensible, have a thought out or interesting topic, and include the requisite substance to make the topic discussion-worthy, then you should be fine.

Honest answer is that sometimes it's how a topic is presented than the topic itself.  A valid OT post can be fubar'd if packaged wrong.  A marginal OT post can be steller if the OP presents it well.

The topic, the presentation and what is being discussed on this site all work together.  If this is vague and unclear to someone then they probably should wait a bit longer before posting a thread to this site if you take negative feedback personally.

The mods almost always explain why they crater a post.  Go to the MGoBoard tab at the top of the website, click on the "Moderator Action Sticky", and the mods will probably explain why your OP was jettisoned.

As a matter of fact, here you go:

Bill Burr trolls Michigan fans a little

I don't want to offend the OP, but this one may have been executed in a manner other than well.

And while you're there, look at why other posts have been jettisoned.  That will give you a pretty clear idea of what will and what won't pass muster on the board.

A large part of it, in this case, was the lack of information and the lack of resources regarding the trolling by Burr. Those came belatedly and with the help of other users, but usually by then it is a little too late to salvage the thread.

Also, I want people to consider that a lot of the time - and I speak for myself here as other mods do it differently - I will try to take out the saltier subthreads first, but as someone said above, if you catch these late, sometimes they've taken a life of their own and about 0% is actually relevant to the point the OP was trying to convey.

So, yeah, very rarely is it content itself but more presentation of said content.

Bill Burr is famous for people that like comedy... if you don't know who he is then you don't know comedy and love a dull life.

anything that gets you callled motherfucker less than 15 times, using your own mother as an example, although not always appropriate, is usually accepted. So hang in there, motherfucker.

I negged the Bill Burr post because it was SO trivial.  Who cares - some nobody threw stupid shade on us for no reason other than we're a famous program.  Whatever.  It didn't get my blood to boil, and it wasn't indicative of anything other than a bad joke by Burr.  Had no idea why someone would rush to MGoBlog to alert the fanbase to THAT.  I mean srsly.

If were were going to get posts everytime someone in the media threw shade at us, then MGoBlog would be like an index of Pete Finebaum's daily shows.

rockediny

It was more lighthearted ribbing and he was talking about how watching Chris Carter was the first time he enjoyed college football and went on to sing our actual fightsong. How is that throwing shade?

Reasons I neg (not just the Bill Burr post, but in general):

  1. Reposting something that's already been posted 20 mins before (please take 4 seconds to read the 5 posts before you)
  2. Random opinions without qualifying them, usually after a loss (i.e. Here's a new post with my opinion because I'm too special to put it in the comments section of the relevant article)
  3. No link, pertinant info, or destination (i.e. the Bill Burr post )
  4. Random ass stories that have nothing to do with anything (i.e. I was heckling some PSU fans at a casino, lol)
  5. Deaths that have nothing to with anything (i.e. "Well... bye")
  6. Anything that doesn't label the sport of the team playing (i.e. Team 47 takes two of three versus Iowa)

I guess to not sound all doom and gloom, I'll include what I think makes a good post:

  1. Clear concise title ("Ty Wheatly says XYZ at pre-practice press conference")
  2. Labels (OT, Meta, Article, etc)
  3. Links, Links, Links
  4. Accurate comment with appropriate data

6'7", ~335 pounds with little to zero bad weight. Great pad level, footwork and use of arms. A tape rat with consistent understanding of level 1 and 2 blocking responsibilities across multiple schemes. Nasty demeanor that takes the pancake when it's offered. That seems most appropriate for OT.

I have found that people here will tolerate many topics if it isn't trivial, religious, political, scatological, prurient, sexybits, speculation or gross. Things related to Michigan sports, sports in general, state of Michigan, moral outrage are always good.

BrownJuggernaut

May 15th, 2017 at 3:43 PM ^

For me, it was more the fact that the topic was trivial than the lack of information provided. I don't think that we need to start threads every time a famous or semi-famous person does something Michigan related, whether it's trolling or supporting. It's not that your thread falls outside of "OT" so much as it wasn't worthy of a thread, IMO. I know who Bill Burr is (used to listen to his podcast more regularly before), but why should we care that he trolled us? It just doesn't seem significant to me.

The lack of information and a summary of what he did didn't help either. I'd also add that there have been a lot worse and irrevelant threads on here, offseason or not.

I negged it because I saw that tons of other people were negging it, and I assumed it was for a good reason. I have no idea what the post was actually about. Oh look, I see a bunch of people jumping off a bridge.
