META: The New Banner + iPhone homescreen icons
Just noticed the new banner. NOICE! Gotta love the look of exasperation on JH's face. It makes me wonder, is he responding to the refs, or me?
Question for the admins or smartphone smarty-pants'es: Is there a way to have the site bind the icon on my iPhone homescreen to have a persistent image like that or else maybe the podcast icon, instead of refreshing to an iscrutably small image of whatever the latest post is?

Yes.
Yes there is.

But you need a certain number of points first.

Banner is ok. Make it a site wide contest to design one. Give us the specs of the .jpg you need.
I know there are a bunch of MGOGraphicDesigners out there

You guys just need to add Favicon images/code to the site and it should work automatically when people put a shortcut or bookmark

Here's a quick one I just whipped up, if it helps

I was just searching on the Podcasts app on my iphone for the Mgoblog app and I could not find it. Can anyone help?

There is no app for MGoBlog 3.0
Only Zuul.

Oh Zuuly you nut.
What a lovely singing voice you must have.

I visit this site because it's a client and because it sleeps above its covers - FOUR FEET above its covers. It barks, it drools, it claws...

Take me now, subcreature.

FWIW the decision to withdraw support of the MGoBlog app (both the original and the HD versions) will go down as one of the worst in this site's storied history. I find myself engaging with content here much less frequently than when I could simply use the app. Really dumb.

Believe Seth posted something about apps being in the works and the issue with the non-affiliated apps being that they downloaded the entire site to your phone or something, which was one of the cause of the site crashes. Don't remember where I read that though so maybe it was a fever dream.

Not trying to troll, legitimate question here - why not just use the mobile site? If it's a matter of an extra button press or two, why not bookmark the mobile site? I agree, the app was way better than 2.0 on mobile, but at this point, the 3.0 site on mobile is pretty good, and not dramatically different than the app used to be. I'm just curious what you think the app would add or make easier that you can't do with the mobile site now?
September 12th, 2018 at 1:23 PM ^
2.0 wasn't bad on mobile either. I never used the app on the old site, and I spent a lot more time on 2.0 than 3.0.

I honestly don't have a good reason why, I just don't like using safari/chrome/whatever on my phone. I know it's irrational, but it's just a dumb preference. The experience is better when in a standalone app. Seems like a lot of people I talk to are on the same page.
Could make the same argument that using mobile sites is just as good for a lot of things (news sites, facebook, whatever.) People just like apps more.

+1
It's a weird quirk, but using an app is invariably a better experience than navigating through a site on a browser.

This is somehow the opposite yet exactly the same as an old man yelling to get off his lawn.

Haha very true.
Now get me my danged avocado toast!

I seriously have no idea why I can't see that Banner. I still have Chase, Z, and some hockey dude.

You and me both.

Preferably with some cold, fresh, whole milk... not that candy-ass 1 or 2% kind

Try pressing CTL+SHFT+R or CTL+F5 and it should refresh and clear cached images.

Now I get nothing. No banner at all.
September 12th, 2018 at 1:40 PM ^
maybe try it again - connection issue or something? Not sure - what's browser do you use
September 12th, 2018 at 3:00 PM ^
Oh shit...whatever you do, don't go home...
September 12th, 2018 at 1:21 PM ^
I believe the site developers would have to code one in there so it gets picked up by Safari before you add the shortcut to your homescreen. As a workaround though, it seems Safari just grabs a sample of what is on your screen at the time you save the shortcut to your homescreen. So you can zoom in on something you'd prefer to be the icon and get a better result.
Example:

This works but the image will change next time you open the site from that link. Or eventually the image will change, maybe not every time.
September 12th, 2018 at 1:26 PM ^
Damn, you're right. Foiled, again. Sorry, OP

I asked about a bookmark/favorite/iphone app icon too, but not sure if it was ever seen. The dev team just needs to implement a "favicon" code/image and it should work when people bookmark the site
Code generator:

Quick icon I made if anyone is able to code it in:

I'm on mobile, not sure if there is a way to look at a users post history, but if you can look at mine, I started a thread with a way to do what you want. If you scroll through the comments there is an additional image I posted to use. If I find it I'll link to it.
