Meta: The ads are taking over

Submitted by VikingDiet on July 6th, 2019 at 10:20 AM

Is anyone else having this issue? It is not isolated to one page, seems to be happening all over.

They're obviously welcome to do whatever but I hope we haven't entered the modern internet ad blocker cycle.

Some ad blockers deployed by users, site adds intrusive ads to make up revenue, more ad blockers deployed by users in response to intrusive ads, rinse, repeat.

To be clear, I have no issue with ads, but there seems to be something wrong as I try to type this out... As one person mentioned, it's taking up 60% of my screen, so I can even really see the content.

Yeah, I'm getting am ad between the hamburger menu and the MGBlog logo. Tenders the site completely unusable on mobile. I can't even view a whole comment at once. I can't see any of the text box I'm typing in right now: the on screen keyboard covers 40% of the screen and the ad covers the rest. I love visiting the site on mobile and I keep hoping this ad will go away, but it won't.

I don't see ads for the Toto Washlet K300 Bidet seat on any other website. Same with Horse Bridles and Bridle Parts for the horse I've never owned. It's a special MGoBlog treat.

I've been on the internet for as long as it's had advertising, and I don't think I've ever intentionally clicked on an online ad, and have never purchased anything because I've seen an ad. There are a number of websites I now avoid specifically because the ads are so fucking annoying, so I don't get what the ROI is for that stuff.

Ditto... I will never click an online ad.

But ROI you say, it's laughable.  It costs just a bit more than nothing to send out millions of ads.  If all they get is just a handful of clicks, that's just $$$ for the company.

But ads are so 2000.  Where Big Tech makes their dough these days is with your data.

This comes up every now and then. I use an ad blocker everywhere, in part because of the time there were malicious ads on this site. In a thread similar to this one, I asked Seth how much to donate to make up for their lost ad revenue and he gave a straight answer based on my reported usage of the site.

I don't block ads on mobile and my experience is like the rest of you.

The ads are terrible.  The site is pretty terrible the last year or two.  It doesn't feel like Brian cares at all.  The craziest part is that he wrote a front page article about other sites that failed because they focused too much on monetization and audio/video.... Now this site is so commercial it's almost unusable and 75% of the content is audio.  Also, don't give me any bullshit about free content.  The internet is free, that's just how things work.  I've never paid to read M news and I never will.  I don't directly give any money but I'm now giving less because I don't come here much.  Make a better product and I'd come more.  Even more damning,90% of what I read is just the board.

Ads are part of the reason I access the site almost exclusively from a laptop. The ads don't seem as intrusive on a laptop, and for my own sanity, I do keep the AdBlocker on if I am going to post.

I don't mind the adds. For a free site I don't find them that annoying and I will occasionally click on them, since some extra revenue will go to this site if people would occasionally click on the adds.

Come on... at this point you guys can't still be suffering under some delusion that HuEl will ever produce a site that doesn't flake and fail and roll out a new bug every couple days.

I get that you've chosen to go with a company that can't deliver - I just can't believe you're still lying to yourselves and thinking it will eventually get better.

The ads don’t bother me but then again, I make $2,000 a week working part time from home.  It is fun and easy.  Contact me for your free no obligation sales kit.

If you have an Android OS on your phone AND use the Google Chrome Browser the browser blocks some, not all ads. Google uses a set of rules to determine who can advertise on sites you visit using the Chrome Browser. If you want to you can read about them but ...... you can also just download the Chrome Browser onto your phone then visit mgobolg.com. No flashing GIFs, no intrusive mid-page and no screen hogging adverts, no auto-audio or video play ads. Works for me. I get a small drop down Google sponsored ad at the top of the mgo page that you can roll up by swiping it. Otherwise the mgo mobile site is ad-free when viewing on Chrome.

Some sites you visit with Chrome will have adds that disrupt the page (mid-article adverts that load unexpectedly and direct you to them). If you are patient, you can X out the add and click on some questions Google asks and those ads won't appear on that site for you anymore. I've done this on NRO and after a few clicks, those ads go away. It's not a perfect world with respect to adverts on the internet but it's manageable. Sorry iPhone users. Safari, to my knowledge, doesn't work like this.I don't think any of the MS versions of their web browsers do this either, not sure though b/c I don't use them at all on any of my devices.

I would pay for an Ad free experience here at MGoBlog.  I pay for it elsewhere (NYTimes, Atlantic, ESPN+, Weather.com) for the type of quality and in-depth reporting we get here.  10,000% agree that Brian deserves to get paid for this so I will endure until an ad free option is offered, then I will pay the man himself.

They are increasing, which, good for MGoBlog getting that paper, but in my experience on my phone the page loads, then the ads continue to load for several minutes, impeding page function.

I'll typically click on mgoblog, wait a few seconds, hit my drop-down tab, hit the X to stop the page from loading, hit the three lines, hit the MGoBoard tab, then hit the second MGoBoard tab, then wait a few seconds, hit the dropdown and the X again, then browse the latest stories to see what's new. It's a new and improved pain in the dick.

You mean you guys don’t like all the viagra and extended living ads? Tough crowd..

It's nearly unusable on a phone, with the ads blocking the nav controls, seemingly on purpose.

But HUEL, man, awesome (anyone know if points are working? Can we edit posts? Any ETA for the jumps going to the new content instead of the top of the page?)

It's a classic example of getting less of what you want (money) by choking a site with ads: In the end people block them or just stop using the site as much.

Over. Kill.
