META: 408 / 525 server errors

Submitted by jmblue on June 4th, 2019 at 10:51 PM

These errors have recurred again and again in the decade (!) I've posted here.  Even a June evening without much going on isn't safe from server problems, apparently.  This is a perennial topic of discussion but is never resolved.  How is it that MGoBlog seems to be more afflicted by this problem than any other college sports site?

What is the barrier to having a more functional site?  Money?  This community doesn't have a problem opening its wallet...

I really don't think it's from too much traffic, which always seemed to be the reason before. I'm hoping they're doing some updates. It would seem inevitable that there would have to be some server errors if they're messing with the site, right?

From some of Brian's comments concerning politics in Ann Arbor and affordable housing, I believe what we are seeing is a push to increase ad revenue, everything else be damned.  You have to provide a balance and it seems that has been lost here as well as, I suspect, many users.

If they cleaned this mess up, I'd be happy to support the site with an annual fee.

If they cleaned this mess up,

I think a good start would be going back to the old format.

At least with the old format, there wasn't all this wasted whitespace and ads weren't embedded in the posts -- just on the sidebars.

I think enough time has passed that we're out of the "people don't like change" excuse window.

The way the site loads is a mess. You can't even load tabs in the background, while any other website would pre-load your pages.

I get that the changes are to keep the servers free from unnecessary incremental traffic, but it is significantly worse than almost literally any other website I can think of.

Not sure if it is something HUEL designed or some other constraint, but it has got to be addressed if this site is going to survive whatever the next wave of digital evolution will bring.

Serious question.

Is there a board type site that people actually like how it interacts and loads?

I go to a lot of boards and rarely see a board go very long without a complaint on how the site works.

StackOverflow is pretty solid (reddit similarly deals with a lot of traffic pretty well), though in both those cases they have relatively simple sites in terms of what gets loaded.  Their big issue is with sheer traffic.  And even with that, Stack has issues that sometimes degrade performance.

This site isn't the best-designed in the world by any means, but people complain about it constantly seemingly out of habit.

For me, 1 Blocker blocks ads here but it also prevents comments from being viewable on my iPhone.

I've found Crystal to be a better option for this site because it catches ads while still allowing comments to be readable.

That being said, put me in the camp of those willing to pay for content. How about a tier of sponsorship with HTTV that comes with a one-year ad-free subscription to this site?

(Not telling Brian and Co. how to run their business; just offering a suggestion while absolving my guilt on blocking the horrendously imposing ads here.)

There is a contingent on this site that perpetually complains about how this site doesn't work in the ways they believe it should, despite evidence that it is improving and, honestly, wasn't all that bad before.

Also, this is the internet - things sometimes don't work.  Google was down a couple of days ago to an extent that people couldn't open their smart doors or run their AC.  If it can happen to Google, then a temporary breakdown in site functionality here in the middle of the day in June isn't out of the picture.

My guess is that there are new features being added or enabled; I've seen those errors before and they usually appear because of site maintenance.

Yeah.  I assume they're adding something new (perhaps some requested changes to comments).  My larger point was that when a site doesn't function properly it doesn't necessarily mean it is some horrific sign of incompetence and cheapness.

Also, this is the offseason for the site; I always assume there will be quirks during this time.
