McGary's Parents Favor Duke; AAU Coach Favors Michigan

Submitted by Raoul on

It's hardly a surpise that Wayne Brumm, Mitch McGary's AAU coach, thinks Michigan is the best place for McGary given his previous positive comments, but this cbssports.com article reveals that McGary's parents want their son to attend Duke:

McGary didn't deny the fact that his parents favor Duke while his summer coach with the SYF team, Wayne Brumm, likes Michigan.

He also said he's still taking it all in right now.

"I'm keeping quiet," he said. "I'm putting it down on paper and seeing what school fits me. I'm not sure when I'll commit."

Although the article hints at a chance that McGary commits to Duke today when Krzyzewski meets with him at Brewster, that seems unlikely given that Calipari is supposed to be meeting with McGary on Saturday and that McGary continues to say that he still wants to visit Florida, Maryland, and Kentucky "but he's not sure if and when that will happen."

So much, by the way, for Sam Webb's gut feeling that Michigan, Maryland, and Florida were the leaders among the final six.

Exactly.

Greg Oden and Evan Turner went to *perennial powerhouse* OSU.  Michael Beasley went to Kansas State.  Kevin Durant went to Texas.  Blake Griffin went to Oklahoma.  #3 pick Derrick Favors went to Georgia Tech! Another, James Harden, went to Arizona State!

Again, I could go on.  Duke, UNC, Kansas, and the rest of the all-time leaders in college basketball (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/List_of_teams_with_the_most_victories_in_NCAA_Division_I_men's_college_basketball) aren't necessarily churning out stellar draft prospects anymore.

I don't really care that much if he goes elsewhere. I can't work up the enthusiasm to root for a kid whose connection to the University of Michigan would be that tenuous and short-lived.

I also erad somewhere that he favored a school with a strong football program.  Wish he would have been there for the night game, but there is no question the direction of the two football programs.

I've heard this "strong football program" claim before, but no one ever provides a link to where McGary actually said this. It came up previously in this thread, where a poster tried and failed to come up with a source for this claim. I'm very skeptical that McGary ever said this.

LEt me start by saying I am a MIchigan fan, but I can certainly understand why he and his parents would want him at Duke.

My wife got her bachelors from UM while getting her JD (Law) from Duke. They are both excellent educations, and I can be the first to tell you that both have student bases full of arrogant a-holes that feel entitled. I don't really feel that either of those two not so nice qualities are exclusive to one school. I will say this about Duke as an academic institution. Duke proclaims themselves the Harvard of the south, much like Michigan says they are the Harvard of the midwest, but the difference imo is the student body size. At Duke you get an education where most professors get to know you pretty well do to the small class sizes. If you compare the size of the student enrollment you find out pretty quickly that at Duke your education is a little more intimate then at a large public school.  Also, in the south Duke is pretty much it (exception UVa), and in the midwest UM can tend to get lost (maybe not lost but mixed in) with great schools like NW, Chicago, Notre Dame, etc. Duke for under grads looks like freaking Harry Potter as well, so it gives it that Harvard feel. JMO.

As far as basketball goes, why would a parent not want their kid to go to Duke. Coach K, although many hate him, is as good as you're gooing to get. The thing that wins kids over now that used to be on the fence is what he did with the US basketball team. People call him a system guy, then he goes and coaches Koby and LeBron and they all buy in. Sorry but JB is not matching up to that. Atmosphere---Michigan doesn't come close to comparing. It is like comparing a MAC school vs Michigan in football. Yes MIchigan will get up for OSU, MSU, etc, but go to a game at Cameron and the atmosphere is hard to compare. I've been to UK games and despite it being bigger and full of tradition, there is no comparison in terms of actual atmosphere.

Just my thoughts.

Jeff Goodman, who wrote the piece about McGary referenced in the OP, has another article out focusing on another Brewster Academy player, the underrated Jalen Reynolds. Goodman reports that Reynolds more than held his own against McGary in open gyms held at Brewster over the last couple of days.

From a personal perspective... My parents wanted me to go one place and my coaches knew more than they did. They knew how the college coaches were and I listened to them over my parents. Hopefully, the same goes for McGary.

Parents in general probably have a little more influence than a coach. With that said, where a parent wants a kid to go to school can change somewhat easily, but where a coach thinks the kid should go probably won't change to easily. Also, in the grand scheme of things its great that this coach thinks so highly of beilein. They have a great team and will in the future as well so hopefully we can pick up some other great SYF players in the coming years! (I can't wait for robinson  to come)
