MBB Recruiting: 2017 G Shakwon Barrett to visit this weekend
Per a few outlets, '17 Canadian guard Shakwon Barrett will visit this weekend. He played at Findlay Prep behind a player Michigan heavily recruited in the past, Derryck Thornton (now at USC, formerly at Duke). He's 6'4" and it's not clear to me where he projects position-wise. Doesn't have a Rivals/Scout/247 profile that showed up in Google and I couldn't find any offers. Is visiting Tulane and Arkansas next week.
On the positive side, he has good length for a guard. Obviously has some room to bulk up and he might get a bit taller. Doesn't appear quick with the first step, but takes nice long strides in the open court. He has decent change of direction with the ball, and seems to maneuver his way through traffic pretty well despite being a bit loose with his dribble.
On the down side, he seems to play below the rim even at the high school level, which is disconcerting given his height advantage. Lack of explosion woould be a concern on both ends of the floor, especially for a B1G 2/3. Would likely have a tough time finishing at the hoop in college. I'd be skeptical that he could play the point. Jump shot looks okay, beginning of his release is a little low and form is a bit inconsistent.

what's his save pct? GAA? Is he a butterfly-style netminder?
How is his serve? What's his ace percentage?
butterfly stroke? Can he nail a flying back dive, pike position, degree of difficulty 6.8?
What I'm getting from this is he's point/combo guard sized but isn't fast, isn't quick, doesn't have a great handle, bad elevation, no explosion, can't finish and can't shoot.
Either that's a terribly unfair evaluation or. . . why the heck does Beilein want him?
I'm no expert and don't claim to be, but I think that's a fair evaluation. After all, Barrett doesn't appear to have any D1 offers after playing at Findlay Prep (a school every CBB coach in the country keeps tabs on), so there are obviously going to be more weaknesses than strengths at this point. Doesn't mean they can't be overcome with time.
At this point, though, I'd prefer a grad transfer in 2017 and the full court press on Jerome Hunter, Bieniemy, and maybe one more for 2018. To me, the biggest roster weakness down the line is someone who can get to the hoop and finish on their own. We really need to add some combo guard/wing playmakers to complement the other pieces.
Beilein can coach up players like whoah. And we can do S&C to add strength, bulk and some speed. But there's something to be said for the coaches having raw clay to mold. I'm just going off your write-up but I'm not sure what's here that's worth molding. This reads like the sort of flyer you'd take on a guy who's over 7' and healthy, because 7' tall and healthy. 6'4" without speed or grace. . . I can find someone like that in the cubicle farm I work at.
that Beilein can see and the rest of us can't, we need to be recruiting players with more physical ability and potential to get a lot better.
He's hell bent on trying to do more with less instead of more with more.
Raekwon's son might be in AA!

No, this is clearly the son of the star of the 2000 NBA Champion Los Angeles Lakers...
Speaking of Derryck Thornton, has going to Duke paid off for anybody lately? Okafor has been disappointing, Tyus Jones never plays, Parker & Winslow are always hurt, Kennard & Giles sat on the bench as freshmen. Jury's out on Ingram. Duke's best recent draft pick was Rodney Hood and he transferred from Miss St.
I guess Kyrie Irving turned out OK after playing 11 games for Coach K and the Plumlees all have jobs.
Just some thoughts to pass along to Mo Bamba.
What does this economy need? 100% Plumlee employment. I hope the Fed takes this metric into consideration before changing interest rates again.
Seriously? Okafor may be disappointing so far in the NBA, but he was dominant at Duke and was picked 3rd overall. Correlating him going to Duke with him being a disappointment in the NBA is ridiculous. If that's the case Bamba should also avoid Michigan since Stauskas, Burke and McGary have all been busts as well.
How is Duke supposed to control Parker and Winslow being hurt in the NBA? Also, in what world did Kennard sit on the bench as a freshman? Dude averaged 12 PPG and 27 MPG last year.
Nope. In heels, perhaps. NTTIAWWT.
hard pass, jfc
I thought the Jordan brand was supposed to have kids knocking down our doors to want to play in these shoes and gear....
That's what the cool kids told me 18 months ago.
Unless we're diving into that end of the pool, we will still struggle to land the kids that are interested in Jordan schools.
That's why Harbaugh let Rashan Gary go to Clemson. That's why Aubrey Solomon is at Georgia and DPJ is at Florida State. When money's in play, there's no sense in even trying.
Just accept your terrible fate and try to flip Horizon League commits. That's all you can do.
You completely missed the entire point he was trying to make.
That's huge news if true.
So what you're saying is Jim Harbaugh can put together top 5 classes because Michigan is great despite winning pretty much nada the last 15 years. Indicative of the #4 all-time football program as voted by the AP.
But John Beilein has to scrape the bottom of the barrell for absolute nobodies with zero division 1 offers elsewhere and hand out grad transfer scholies despite winning almost everything the last 5 years. Nowhere near indicative of the #14 all-time hoops program as voted by the AP. (Meanwhile #13 MSU is loading up on McDonald's All-Amercans)
Makes sense.
I don't care if Beilein wants to recruit nothing but unathletic shot chuckers. He's figured out how to win with that type of player. I'm not trying to change his style. He's put this program in the Sweet 16 3 of the past 5 years. Why the hell would I want to change one thing about John Beilein's approach?
I just have a serious problem when fans try to blame other schools for our recruiting. The level of recruits we get is 100% because of who John Beilein is, who he goes after and his inability to land big fish. It's on John Beilein. It's not MICHIGAN's fault. It's not Brian Ellerbe's fault. It's not Ed Martin's fault. It's not the AAU. It's not the bagmen. It's not one-and-done rule.
It's John Beilein. He's the reason he signs who he signs.

It is?
The 3 star recruits Beilein has put in the NBA are Hardaway and LeVert. According to the 247 composite D Morris, M Harris, Burke, Stauskas, McGary, GR3, Walton, Irvin, Wagner, and Wilson were all Top 100 prospects. In other words, almost every recruit JB has signed that isn't a Top 100 recruit hasn't sniffed a mock draft board.
I don't mind Beilein going outside the Top 100 occasionally if he sees a player he really likes but he already did that with Brooks this class, and with Bamba still out there and some of the grad transfer options, this makes no sense to me.
Gonna win some championships

not really a good comparison. We are late in the 2017 cycle and Barrett doesn't have any offers. Burke was a late addition 3* with a B1G offer (Penn St), GR3 committed early in the process before class rankings really started to shake out, and Stauskas was a fringe top-75 prospect with plenty of attention. Wagner is the closest comparison, but he was halfway across the world, not at Findlay Prep where everyone could see.
MAAR or Spike's recruitments are the best equivalent here.
and Bake.
and both of those turned out pretty well, ultimately.
It's just a highlight tape, but I see plenty to like.
Ya' know, Steph Curry doesn't dunk in his highlight tapes either.
Coach B knows he has fallen short in doing that in the past. Anyone would learn from the missteps, and Coach B is a bright man.
