As a coach Brian Jean-Mary gets a bit of a Mulligan from last year.  As a recruiter, he gets a pretty good grade.  He managed to get and hold on to Colson and Hood, both solid players.

Nua on the other hand, was in charge of a miserable line and didn't land one defensive tackle, arguably the position of greatest need.

You would think any worthy candidate who has coordinated a defense before would be quite leery of accepting a role to coordinate a defense for a guy who was just forced to take a paycut and sign a contract that is easy to get out of.

Doubt any top candidate with experience would want to hitch their wagon to a guy is on a flaming hot seat.

This is quite literally the dumbest idea that keeps getting repeated on this board. As if a football coach that gets fired never gets re-hired anywhere else.

Drevno was the dumbest ever and got hired at USC

Pep was the dumbest ever and works for the LA Chargers

Brady Hoke was fired for allowing Shane Morris to nearly scramble his brains and field an awful football team and yet he’s been hired numerous times over since then.

It’s the toxic fan way:

get an older guy with experience: he’s a retread. Why didn’t we get an up and comer.

get a younger guy who’s an up and comer? Why didn’t we get experience.

hell the other day I heard some dude complaining that “brown was never that good he didn’t do a good search just looked him up on the internet...”

Remember the good ole days when they were hiring position coaches with super bowl experience that excited recruits, Ric Flair at signing with the stars, satellite camps, front page espn coverage of Jimmy.

Where did it go wrong?

Great question. We can point to all the usual culprits but to me the one mystery is where did that guy go who brought all that energy??  Players were ranked after each and every practice, competition thrived, Harbaugh brought excitement and there was like a force field of positive energy around him.  Tom Brady, Woodson, Michael Jordan were all honorary captains. It felt like the midwest version of Showtime with Magic. We've all speculated on every possible cause, no sense re-hashing them. But if I'm Warde the #1 thing I ask of Jimmy for 2021 is bring back the electricity. If you go out, go out throwing haymakers. But don't go quietly into the night, that's not the Harbaugh we all viewed as the program's savior 6 short years ago.

I hope these guys work out.

But, frankly, this look like reshuffling the deck chairs. None of these guys are highly sought after. Now, maybe one or more of them turns out to be a really sharp mind. I hope so! But it’s also true that nobody who came here is someone who is so desirable that they could count on a lucrative, successful multi-year position. These are career coaches marching up the ladder that can just get another job on the ladder if this doesn’t work out.

I hope they turn things around. But there’s no one on the D staff that jumps out at me and says “we’re building something here.”

Stephen I usually agree with a lot of what you say or if I don’t agree I at least think you make a valid point. But man do I think you’re off here. Do you think when OSU hired Brian Hartline they were just shuffling deck chairs? Today’s game requires elite recruiting. Mo is an absolutely elite recruiter and the stuff he has done with multiple different teams speaks for itself. Mike has been around some of the best defenses in college football and the NFL and has learned from the best. Brian Jean-Mary had helped lead some very solid defenses and he also learned under some elite guys.

A lot of college football is about elite recruiting. Between Moore, Mo, Gattis, and Jay Michigan has some absolutely elite recruiters. I am going to assume Hart will be at least good as well but just with the 4 mentioned above Michigan could go from 10-20 ranked classes to pushing towards the top 5. Michigan needs to land some more 5 star talent to find some playmakers. Mo is already getting right on that and Gattis is doing a heck of a job bringing in playmakers. But specifically defense wise, these dudes will bring in some very good talent. Yes Michigan has recruited well in the past, but more playmakers could make the difference of helping become a playoff team.

Lol at the posters shitting on these hires. Like any of you knew Zordich, Anthony Campanile, Brian Smith, Al Washington or Don fucking Brown from a hole in the ground before Harbaugh hired them. Who is the better coach to hire for any of these positions then, geniuses? Give us a glimpse into the stack of applications...

If you are someone who believes that college football is all about recruiting, you have to be excited about this defensive staff. I’m a little concerned about the lack of experience at the coordinator position, but I will reserve judgment until we see the product on the field this fall. It looks like we may be primed for a golden age of defensive recruiting, which we badly need. Go blue!
