Marell Evans the new [other] Stevie Brown

Submitted by formerlyanonymous on

I'm setting the over/under of -10 for Marell Evans in the Defensive UFR.  I swear he was burnt deep once, beat one-on-one about 10 times, and just awful everywhere.

I'll post 20 theoretical dollars its the under (as in worse than -10).

And was it just me, or did Stevie Brown from the Horror show up to the first half of this game?

When Asiata turned the corner around him on that swing pass I went nuts.  He slowed up, looked behind him for help, and seeing none coming threw his hands up and let Asiata get by for a huge gain down the sideline.  It looked on the replays that if he wouldn't have been looking for help behind him he had a shot at making the tackle.  Very frustrating to watch.

If he had been busting to the ball on that play, he would have made the play. I dont know what he was thinking there. Warren missed a tackle downfield on that play, giving them another 10 yards. I saw another play or two where Evans hustle was quesitonable. I think he was replaced by Mouton (#8) in the second half at some point and I actually saw Mouton in the middle of some plays in the 4th.

Now, onto Brown. It will be interesting to see how those who break this stuff down play by play (Brian in the UFR, Gsimms as 2 examples), but I felt Brown played well. He brought a physical game and I noticed him in on a handful of good plays as I rewatched the game this morning. The big play that I'm sure has everyone freaking out is that long catch and run on Utah's first drive that was a on 3rd and long and gave the Utes a first and goal. Talk about deja-vu as wathcing it unfold it looked similar to Appy St's first TD last year.

But, I dont think that was Brown's fault. Utah has 2 WR's on that side of the field. We had marshmellow soft coverage. Guys were way off the ball at the snap. Chambers had the guy on the outside, but let him go right by him (had to have been a zone because he ran right by Chambers, who had given the WR a big cushion off the LOS) forcing Brown to get over there. Johnson baited him there and hit the inside guy who was covered by Warren, If Warren wraps that guy up, its a fourth and short. Instead, he cant finish the play and its off to the races.

Maybe Brown should have stayed home for tackling help, but if he does, then Utah has a wide open guy jogging down the sidelines, with no other help and its 6. I am not a coach, nor did I ever play DB, but it seems that Brown was caught between a rock and a hard place on that play. The failure there as I see it was the scheme which wasted Chambers as a possible defender and Warren for missing a tackle.

Quickly: I've called out Warren for 2 missed tackles in this post. He made a couple big tackles in the running game in the fourth quarter, which was good to see him rebound like that.

jamiemac, I agree with your analysis. My question is this: we have heard endlessly that Shafer's style is to jam receivers and bring heat to the QB. Early on, our coverage was very soft and the pressure non-existent. He did get burned with a couple early situational blitzes, but then he seemed to go into his shell. While I can't complain about his second half adjustments, Brian Johnson had, in the first part of the game, wiiiiiide open options all over the field. These are 3rd and 4th option Utah receivers - we should be able to jam them.

Steve Brown lost leverage on that long catch and run.  I haven't watched the play since it was rerun during the game, but I believe we were in 3-deep coverage.  In that coverage, it doesn't matter to the guy in the middle third (Brown) that two guys are in Warren's third.

On the throw/completion, Brown should have funneled the receiver toward the sideline and Warren, who could have helped bring him down.

Trent didn't do a very good job of containing the receiver from getting to the opposite sideline, but that motherscratcher (and Harrison) sure did fly to catch him.  I'd take Trent and Harrison in a foot race against just about anyone in the country.  I'll be sorry to see them go, because even though Warren and Cissoko have good speed, I don't think they're THAT fast.
