M Soccer wins season opener

Another week, another season kicking off in Michigan Athletics.

Women's Soccer opened up the calendar last week with a season-opening win at home, so now the Men's team got their turn to get things started tonight.

Michigan faced William & Mary at U-M Soccer Stadium tonight.

Last year's meeting out there on the road was an ugly outing. A 4-0 blowout loss in a disaster season that sent many including former players calling for Coach Chaka Daley's head.

Well, in the offseason he signed a really good recruiting class. If he can't win with these guys, he can't win period.

Michigan took a 1-0 lead in the 10th minute of the game when freshman Mohammed Zakyi converted on a penalty kick. Zakyi is one of three players on the roster hailing from Ghana.

It would be the only goal in the game. Shots and corners were dead even for both teams, and W&M had a late surge but the Wolverines held on for the narrow victory.

Michigan will get two days off and be back at it on Monday night at U-M Soccer Stadium against Valparaiso.
