Lets Talk Super Bowl, BBQ, Adult Beverages, and What is Going Well in Your Life
Mates,
We have had some 'great' bball and thread posts (Livers out...I believe in corporal punishment for this OP). However, there are way more fun things to focus on.
First, lets talk Super Bowl. The Chiefs are favored by 1.5 points, game is in Miami. The Chiefs were 12-4 with 3 of their losses coming at home. The Niners would probably be considered the surprise team of the year with a 13-3 record. Who do you have?
And since we've had doom and (basketball) gloom this week, share with what is going well in your life - job, love life, kids, health, whatever. What's on tap for tomorrow? We will be mucking out the hen house and I think we'll do that instead of watch the Michigan B-ball game since I'm guessing both might smell very similar.
And yeah, its Friday night, so what is in your cup? I might have a little red pop in a coffee cup. Maybe.
I hope you have a great weekend,
XM

since when can a russian get a driver's license?
i did see something today about starting in october, anybody that wants to board a flight in the U.S. has to have that 'enhanced' ID. curious what others have heard of that. seems unnecessary.
January 24th, 2020 at 10:38 PM ^
In Michigan there’s a REAL ID which will be necessary to board a plane on domestic flights by sometime later this year I believe.
Enhanced ID is an “upgraded” REAL ID drivers license that acts as a passport for the Caribbean, Mexico and Canada .... basically going back to the days where you didnt need a passport to go to those places
January 25th, 2020 at 11:51 AM ^
I cannot find anything online which lets you use a driver's license as
a passport for the Caribbean, Mexico and Canada.
Do you have a link?
I have one of these though. https://travel.state.gov/content/travel/en/passports/need-passport/card.html
I got it as a package deal when I renewed my passport. I keep it in my wallet as additional piece of ID for times when I get asked for a second document (entering Federal facilities, client visitor requests, etc.) without the risk of carrying my SSN card or actual passport.
January 24th, 2020 at 10:46 PM ^
In Soviet Russia, passport forfeits you!
January 25th, 2020 at 11:59 AM ^
since when can a russian get a driver's license?
Illegals can get driver's licenses... why shouldn't a Russian then?
has to have that 'enhanced' ID. curious what others have heard of that. seems unnecessary.
It's actually something which has been around for a while. It's born out of 9/11 and my take on it is it's the first step the gov't having a universal ID.
Part of the present-day consternation over it is the deadline is coming do and there's a few states, like California, which cannot make the deadline. Imagine, all of the millions of people in the world's 5th largest economy and they cannot comply with a standard which has been around since 2005.
Hers's a link which should answer many of your questions:

Wait! No need to leave Putin! On November 4, the guy you want to win because of your influence and manipulation is probably going to. Why are you leaving?
January 24th, 2020 at 10:48 PM ^
Buyer's remorse.
January 25th, 2020 at 12:28 AM ^
Lol. Yes. Things not quite what we were lead to believe from......
January 24th, 2020 at 10:00 PM ^
no dog in the right, will root for the 49ers but would also be happy to see PM win a super bowl
life is great, celebrating my daughters 4th bday tomorrow, coaching my sons baseball, which starts up this week too. Work is going great, and be a tremendous year
wife and I are watching the Aron Hernandez documents....scary and sad
drinking spindrift (dry January)

Hey XM, I'm up here in the Northland probably not far from you. Taking KC because done with Cali since leaving the OC in 1990. Drinking 4 Roses Bourbon tonight relaxing with Mrs, GoBlue. Ice probably iffy for fishing, we'll think about it. I'll probably listen to the game, no cable here by choice. Enjoy the red pop lol !
January 24th, 2020 at 10:41 PM ^
for some reason i don't remember that you were in the OC. what part?
i don't recommend the ice fishing right now. have heard of bad ice, and it was bad in the UP today from what i could see. a newish chevy pickup and 2 snowmobiles went into houghton lake last weekend and we've had warmer weather since then. if you go, be darn careful.
January 25th, 2020 at 12:44 AM ^
Anaheim my friend. 1987-1990. After the Navy in San Diego. Sort of after. Got called up a few times.....Brookhurst and Ball....Good times...
January 25th, 2020 at 7:03 AM ^
i know that area well. heck, i prosecuted a bunch of murders/drivebys in that town back in the day. in fact, we had our secret office there, lo those many years ago.

I’d love to see the Chiefs win. Andy Reid is so long overdue and his team is so fun to watch. They’ll have the best player on the field that night. But my money is on SF because I think they’re a better overall team. They just appear to be more balanced and have a much better defense. But I’d rather not see them win. Why?
Because fuck Nick Bosa. Because Jed York hasn’t had to earn one dollar a day in his life. Because Jimmy Garropalo, while I’m sure is a good guy, has made a top dollar franchise QB level contract off of being either injured or just a guy. He’s done jack shit in the playoffs and was only decent in the regular season. He’s not as good as his contract suggests he is. Nowhere even close.
January 24th, 2020 at 10:35 PM ^
go chefs, i guess. don’t really have a dog in the fight but i hate the bosas. thinking sf wins a close one.
work is going well and my kids (6 and 5) are thriving. my marriage, on the other hand, is on the rocks and i’m not sure if there’s a happy ending to be had. trying to keep things in perspective and stay positive but it’s been a rough few months.
January 24th, 2020 at 10:43 PM ^
hang in there with the wife. patience. calm. diligence. things can work out, and your two kids are depending you both to make it work out. much easier said than done, but keep at it.
January 24th, 2020 at 11:00 PM ^
That's tough, man. Sorry to hear, especially with the little ones.
My wife and I have discussed going to counseling for awhile now but have yet to take the plunge. It's not that we fight per se. It's just like we're roommates rather than partners.
January 24th, 2020 at 11:08 PM ^
log off the computer. start dating your wife. you might be surprised at what rekindles.
January 24th, 2020 at 11:19 PM ^
Easy to see how that can happen, unfortunately. Being more present is a tougher concept than it seems.
January 25th, 2020 at 12:29 AM ^
Damn. Sorry to hear that. My wife and I will be celebrating our 22nd anniversary this spring. Not easy. For as often as our relationship has been butterflies and roses, it has been butterfly knives and arsenic. Contemplated divorce a couple times in those 22 years.
But we have always loved each other deeply and always been committed. We are better than ever now (and have been the last few years).
stick to it. Work hard. love is a verb. Not an emotion.

playoffs in january? never heard of that. is it some type of split season, 1st half, 2nd half winner? what/where is that, somewhere in chicago?
January 24th, 2020 at 10:50 PM ^
Detroit area - 2 separate playoffs; MAHA districts (late Jan to mid Feb), and Little Caesars league playoffs (mid Feb to early Mar). Little Caesars is crazy - based in SE Mich (Mike Ilitch) but includes teams from Traverse City and Bowling Green Ohio and everywhere between.
January 24th, 2020 at 11:05 PM ^
things have changed since my (ice age) days. we used to have a few tournaments during the year, but the playoffs were in march, states in late march/april. i remember going to nationals in NY about 100 yrs ago.
January 24th, 2020 at 10:48 PM ^
Lived in the Bay Area for 5 years for grad school. Always rooted for East Bay teams since I lived in Berkeley. Therefore, pulling for KC cuz screw the 49ers and Fuck Stanfurd.
Apparently, whoever I root for doesn’t win much though, so 49ers will likely win.
Drinking local as I am a hotel in Cleveland. Great Lakes Dortmunder Lager. Moving here in ~2 weeks for new job (already posted about that so I won’t bore anyone further) so I figured I’d better start getting the lay of the land as far as local breweries
January 24th, 2020 at 11:03 PM ^
That had to have been some opportunity to get you to Cleveland.
January 25th, 2020 at 12:16 AM ^
It was. Doubles my pay + annual raises + 20% annual bonus + stock options + stock grants + substantial 401k match + best health/vision/dental benefits I have ever seen. Also much more upward mobility in the company. I still hate Ohio but we all have a price.
Been in Kalamazoo area for 12 years and stayed for the kids (stability etc.) .... the youngest moved out last fall so time for MGoWife and I to do our own thing. And make a whole lot of money doing it. Been over qualified and underpaid for years but “family first.” Now it’s Dad (and his golf game) first haha
January 25th, 2020 at 10:32 PM ^
That's awesome to hear. Best of luck with the new gig.
January 24th, 2020 at 11:10 PM ^
I’m taking the chiefs, because I have never really liked the 9ers and Jed York is pretty insufferable.
I was happy to see 2019 go. We lost my father-in-law unexpectedly, my dad was diagnosed with Glioblastoma Multiforme (same thing that John McCain had), and things have just generally been rough. I’ve been trying to focus on the positives. My beautiful first child (a girl) turns 1 soon, and she’s absolutely been the best thing to ever happen to my wife and I. Being a Dad is simultaneously the best, and most challenging job that I’ve ever had. My wife and I are still going strong, despite the adversity. Hold your people close, there are never any guarantees.
Nothing in my cup tonight, but tomorrow night I’ll have a few Kona Big Waves and unwind. I’m taking over full parental duties so my wife can pamper herself for a few hours. I’ll have earned a beer or 6 by the evening lol.
Great topic by the way. Thanks for doing it. The meme/visual of people only seeing the tip of someone’s iceberg is insanely true.

Sorry to hear of these things. Praying for you all, glad we can tailgate together. Thanks for sharing. Always here for a brother.

a long-time PSU grad and friend sent me this tonight about the kid that fell in love with U of M. i think some of it was already posted but in case you missed it, its a pretty cool 3 minutes of video.

I like the Chiefs. When in doubt, go with the better QB I guess. Should be a good game.
Life is going well. Newborn boy is 2 1/2 months now (first child). The wife and I are enjoying the downtime before the golf season starts up again for me. We’ve been traveling throughout this month - was actually in Ann Arbor on Wednesday and went to Crisler for the first time in my life. Needless to say, it was a very frustrating game to sit through but a great experience nonetheless.
Getting ready for a real vacation next month is SoCal - La Quinta/Palm Springs area. I used to live and work out there and my wife has family in Laguna Beach that we will get to visit.
No drinking for me tonight. Done more this month than I have in a long time. Trying to slow down before the vacation.
Have a great weekend everyone and let’s get this thing back on track tomorrow with a W over Illinois. I’d hate for this team to miss the tournament in Juwan’s first year.
January 24th, 2020 at 11:22 PM ^
traveling with a 2 1/2 month old, especially as a first time parent, can be a challenge. kudos.

He’s been awesome and we’re very fortunate that the car is his favorite place. Plane trip could be interesting, but we’re hopeful.
January 24th, 2020 at 11:31 PM ^
have mom ready to nurse him at a moment's notice on the plane. will help to equalize pressure in his ears and should greatly reduce tears.

Drinking Moscow mules with the wife. I have a beautiful family and a great job. I am truly blessed. My biggest worry is a leaking shower. I hope you can all be as lucky as I. I certainly don’t deserve it.
January 25th, 2020 at 12:23 AM ^
I say this all the time. I have been truly blessed and have had a very easy life compared to many. Some of it is hard work and dedication. Most of it is pure luck.
January 24th, 2020 at 11:32 PM ^
This is Andy Reid's year. I hope. I'm not like a big fan of him or anything but he knocked my Titans out and I just feel he has put in the years of work to finally get that ring.
January 24th, 2020 at 11:35 PM ^
Also, I'm down in Charlotte for work this week and I picked up a 4 pint pack of Triple C's Baby Maker Double IPA. I'm not huge into different beer but this stuff is fantastic.
January 24th, 2020 at 11:50 PM ^
I like SF running game, almost kind of retro.
Will drive to my daughter’s tomorrow and bring her furniture for the small house she is renting, She avoided a complex scam this week so she has lots to talk about. My son in Silicon Valley skied Lake Tahoe over the weekend and he was pretty pumped on the phone tonight.
My drinking never goes past Diet Coke, yet my innards are those of an alcoholic. Go figure. Heading up to the Clinic next week to see about more surgery. For now I am like the Timex watch my kids gave me years ago, not flashy, But it just keeps ticking.

Going with KC. Last connection/reason to support SFO was Mike Johnston...he’s long gone and the city is full of shit now.
Got home tonight, checked my smoked wheat lager experiment...unexpectedly drank entire gallon... hoe lee schizer, talk about meeting expectations. Hope the sweet wine for wife ends up with an equivalent result and mission gets accomplished... love seeing her smile. Conversely, if it doesn’t, her frowns are humorous.
It’s 25th January and all chestnut seedlings have sent shoots.
January 25th, 2020 at 7:05 AM ^
a gallon? how's your head this morning?
January 25th, 2020 at 10:50 AM ^
XM, That depends on who you ask.

I realize that I'm late to the party, but I have truly been celebrating a successful day.
I admit that I don't care about the results of the Super Bowl, but I especially dislike the Chiefs because they've recently had, what I consider, some unsavory players on their roster.
That being said, I had a satisfying week at work holding someone responsible for the most heinous crime that one could commit. I celebrated with a couple fingers of 12 year (special occasion) Irish whiskey, followed by a few domestic brews with good friends.
Full disclosure, my lovely bride has completely understood my celebratory beverages and allowed me to imbibe in peace

We’ll be pulling for Mahomes & KC next week. Love the story from last year after the Patriots had beaten the Chiefs in the AFC Championship game and Brady left the Patriots locker room to go see Mahomes & tell him, “Your day is coming”. I guess that day has arrived.
We’ll be in Punta Cana next Sunday watching the game!
Nothing in my cup but Vernors last night!
Headed to Grandkids basketball games this morning. Life is good.
Nice thread Xtramelanin! I always enjoy your posts.
January 25th, 2020 at 7:08 AM ^
i don't think i was aware of what brady said to mahomes, but prophetic it was.
enjoy EDIT: the DR. what is on the agenda while there, fishing? beach walking?
January 25th, 2020 at 7:51 AM ^
Punta Cana is actually in the Dominican. Lots of sun & beach walking. A little bit of shore fishing.
Seems like each year we are there during Super Bowl Sunday. Kind of fun.
