LeBron gives Ohio players Beats by Dre
LeBron James has given all of the Ohio players a free pair of Beats by Dre according to Urban Meyer's twitter account, and many players twitter feeds. The gifts were given as a token of congratulations for making the NC game.
It seems to me like this should be a NCAA violation, it definitely gives them an edge in recruiting. Now Urban can tell players if you come to Ohio, you'll be shocked by the gift LeBron is giving the team next year.
Special thanks to @KingJames @beatsbydre for their support to the Buckeyes!

The players deserve to be able to accept the headphones. But since it's Ohio State, I think they need to be severely crushed by the NCAA.

1. How is that not an NCAA violation?
2. Beats suck
January 10th, 2015 at 6:28 PM ^
I disagree, although I think they're really overpriced. I did a good amount of research and ended up buying a pair of Solo HD's when they went on sale for $80 after Black Friday. At that price point I don't think I could have done much better, although it's a different story at MSRP.
January 10th, 2015 at 6:33 PM ^
Yeah I meant they suck for the price. They're basicallty $50 headphones with $100 for the brand.
January 10th, 2015 at 6:36 PM ^
I agree the branding and Dr Dre's name make them way more expensive than they should be. I'm really happy with them for eighty bucks but would have gone with something else at retail.

"No highs, no lows -must be Bose!"
Sorry, I had to.
But to your credit, at least their headphones are a bit more highly regarded than they're speakers -but that might not be saying much.

The bose headphones are so much better than the dre headphones, its not even funny,
January 11th, 2015 at 6:46 PM ^
There are so many headphones that are better than Bose that it ~IS~ funny!

pair of Bose 301s from our tiny post exchange (PX) when I was stationed in Turkey in 1986.
They still work just fine.
January 11th, 2015 at 6:51 PM ^
I have a pair of NAD Model 20's I bought (locally) in 1985 that also still work great (many speakers last a very long time) -and they have actual tweeters! But your Bose 301's do have something my NAD's (and pretty much every other speaker) don't -light bulbs! I would bet, though, you'll be due for a re-foaming job sooner than later -but that's not an indication of quality.
(That being said....thank you for your service to our country! I hate to be critical of any service member, but I show Bose no mercy! :) )

You are most welcome. I'll have to check out the foams.

...which is what most people are referencing, the Beats headphones were designed to compensate for the low end losses that murdered the sound of rap and r&b tracks played off mp3s. Beats cans are somewhat more neutral nowadays, but obviously still have that stigma which irks those who are not Beats' target consumer (Michigan fans are not Beats consumers practically by definition).
If you want cost-effective, high quality over the ear headphones get some Sennheisers/Grados/Audio Technicas. Bose are fine but also seriously overpriced and tailored for older ears. And whatever you do, don't get high fidelity studio monitors - unless you are listening to lossless music everything will sound like it is coming out Grapentine's PA.
January 10th, 2015 at 11:51 PM ^
You can get a pair of Grados for $80 that are 10 billion times better than anything Beats has ever dreamed of making.

But I would +10 if he mentioned Stax!
January 10th, 2015 at 8:13 PM ^
It's not a violation because he didn't pay for them. The headphones were donated to Lebron James, and he gave them to the Ohio State players.
January 10th, 2015 at 8:47 PM ^
the cars to the players?
That doesn't make sense. There has to be more to it than that.
January 10th, 2015 at 6:20 PM ^
Think its only fair that LeBron buys Beats for all the other 127 schools
January 11th, 2015 at 10:46 AM ^
On View from the Backfield, I'm pretty sure they said Oregon got them also. Not all 127 other teams, but at least the last two standing.

Is there a place to report things like this for investigation?
January 10th, 2015 at 6:25 PM ^
It's obviously not a violation, or the compliance department wouldn't have allowed it. That said, I have no idea how it's not a violation.

January 10th, 2015 at 6:26 PM ^
Probably, but if we knew that this thread wouldn't be any fun.
January 10th, 2015 at 6:28 PM ^
OK, that's fine, but why would the NCAA allow it? The only thing I can think of is this is part of the gift package that each player gets for getting to the game.
January 10th, 2015 at 6:48 PM ^
Players are allowed a gift package for bowl games. There's a maximium value, maybe $500, for the total. They are usually given out by the bowl or its sponsor.
January 10th, 2015 at 7:05 PM ^
But is it allowed from an outside entity? That just seems really shady. Then is it OK for boosters to say "make it to x, y or z bowl game and I'll gift you (whatever the maximum value is). If that's legal, this is a very glaring loophole.
January 10th, 2015 at 7:13 PM ^
It really is and like someone else said, that is a huge recruiting advantage that should not be allowed.
January 11th, 2015 at 6:20 AM ^
value allowed for the national championship, that would be in the news. They typically get the max even for lesser bowls.
This just amounts to a booster picking up part of the bowl's tab in exchange for some publicity. I can't see what rule that would be breaking. Bowls already pass along gifts from sponsors and local businesses looking for publicity. It's only noteworthy here because it's Lebron and getting something from him might be a big deal. I wouldn't be surprised to see other celebrities follow suit.

January 11th, 2015 at 6:22 AM ^
When the person giving the gift is a booster, there are a lot of restrictions.
