Kwity Paye's Climb in 247 Composite Rankings

Submitted by Indonacious on

Kwity Paye jumped up 412 spots in the 247 Composite rankings according to the Pre-UA practice rankings. He is up to #537 247 composite rankings now.

It will be curious to see what happens to his rankings now that he gets a chance against much better competition than he sees in RI.

Rankings as of Today:

Scout Rivals ESPN 247 247 Comp
3* #71 DE 3*, #34 WDE 4*, 80, #26 WDE 3*, 86, #45 WDE,
#827
3*, #32 WDE,
#537 Ovr

From his Hello post:

In case you were wondering, he would be MSU's sixth-best commit.

We play MSU every year, they are our No. 2 rival (at least until Notre Dame renews), and they have won three B1G championships in the last seven seasons.  The fact that their lackluster recruiting parallels their lackluster W-L this year is noteworthy.  Indicators that MSU may be on a longer-term slide are very interesting to many of us who frequent the board - especially since we heard for years that on-field results often take time to translate into recruiting results.

If the OP can pack in a little information as to how our No. 2/3 rival is doing in recruiting, and do it in a dig, that seems doubly good to me.  I hope that Paye's rankings rise so high that he'd be in their top 3.

"I just mean the senseless dig at the end. It's just classless." I kind of agree with you, but more so because it really puts our recruit down to point out he's the worst in our class, but would be better on msu's class. As long as you're in the class, first place or last place, all that matters is what you do once you're here.

That's one way of looking at it.  Another way of looking at the OP's last sentence is "and just in case you think it's bad that Paye is listed at the bottom of our recruit list, you should note that Paye would come in as the MSU sixth-ranked recruit".  That makes it more a comment about how loaded our class is, than any slight against Paye.

(And based on his track metrics - holy shit!  This kid can both move quickly and brings a lot of force when he gets there.  It's easy to see why Don Brown wants this young man on the team.)

Anyway, I agree with your last point - once you're in the class, it becomes a meritocracy as far as the team goes, and you can leave your resume at the door.

He more than any other of our recruits has a chance to rise in the rankings after the all star games.  He looks super athletic but it's tough to judge him against lower competition.  If he succeeds against other highly touted players he can really jump up.  I'm betting he becomes a 4 star to at least one of the recruiting sites and a higher 3 star to the others.  I trust Don Brown's eye to evaluate pass rushers.  We'll see.

I had meant, becomes a 4 star to another one of the recruiting sites other than ESPN.  I was pretty unclear on that.  I'm guessing ESPN had not even looked at him until after he committed to Michigan and then gave him the 4 star rating then.

Regardless, Brian will have slim pickins on the Sleeper of the Year.  I bet it's either Paye or one of either Stueber or Honigford.

Those stats are excellent. If he had hit those numbers at the 2016 MI HS D1 finals, Paye would have finished roughly:

  • 4th in the 100m
  • 10th in the 200m
  • 11th in the long jump
  • 9th in the shot put

For reference, KJ Hamler won the D2 100m with a 10.99, and Donovan Peoples-Jones won the Detroit PSL championship with a 10.93.  Paye's a dude.

just how far back these theoretical "expert" media sites are. Truth is, these media types show up to camps/events like the ones out in Beaverton ...... look for a couple minutes at the prospects.....then go eat the free food for the media and spend 90% of their time "mingling" with each other....... hey, it's the dam truth. You really think the newsies are going to write how anemic they are? Good lord, just shows how Coach Harbaugh is light years beyond the experience and skill of the idiots writing on these sights. What a fricken show.

Just watched his senior highlights and his FB skills have skyrocketed vs his jr highlights. He looks significantly more explosive and physical. His jr highlights were not UM material, so obviously Don Brown spotted his physical ability and likely gauged his commitment to becoming an aggressive FB player. Those track #s are exceptional for 225 lbs. He is instantly my pick for Sleeper of the Yearl

Higher risk that he cannot adjust to faster, bigger players. But talent evaluation often depends on the assessment of kinesiology because most HS recruits are a physical mismatch until all-star games. Just playing RB with good cuts to the outside and evading tacklers shows advanced biomechanics that translate to a speed rusher - that is completely independent of crappy RI offensive tackles. I don't expect results at the UA game because his tech is raw, but it will be interesting to see if his athleticism is evident.

I honestly used to get annoyed (& still do a bit if it's Urban) when a coach offers and suddenly a recruit makes a big jump in the rankings.

But it makes perfect sense, that some of these advanced football minds see something in even a highly scouted player that the recruiting services miss.
They are the real experts after all and the services are wise to adjust their ratings if the Sabans, Meyers & Harbaughs of the world all deem a particular player is worth of an offer.

You see the biggest whining from the MSu's of the world still because their coaches usualy don't rate much of a recruiting bump when they offer.  Sucks to be them!
